Weekly Roundup: Talarico and the Pope vs. MAGA Christianity (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

This week on Straight White American Jesus, Brad Onishi and Dan Miller dig into what may become a defining political and theological showdown in American life: the Texas Senate race between Ken Paxton and James Talarico. Framing it as more than a political contest, they explore it as a clash between two competing visions of Christianity—one rooted in power, order, and domination, and another grounded in compassion, dignity, and neighbor-love. Along the way, they unpack the deeply personal and often misogynistic attacks leveled at Talarico, revealing how gender, masculinity, and religious identity are being weaponized in real time.

The conversation then turns to E. Jean Carroll and the latest developments involving the United States Department of Justice, situating the case within a broader pattern of retribution politics under Donald Trump. Brad and Dan argue that Carroll’s treatment reflects not just political vengeance but a deeper discomfort with women who challenge systems of male dominance—and win. The thread connecting it all: a vision of power that equates dominance with righteousness.

Finally, they break down the first encyclical from Pope Leo XIV, highlighting its critique of technological utopianism, AI-driven efficiency, and the dehumanizing tendencies of Silicon Valley. Drawing on biblical imagery like Babel and Nehemiah, as well as unexpected references to J.R.R. Tolkien, the document offers a counter-vision: human dignity over efficiency, community over homogenization, and faith expressed through small, faithful acts rather than grand displays of power. The episode closes by asking a central question: what does it actually mean to be a Christian in America today—and who gets to decide?

Is America a Christian Nation Because States Once Required Religious Tests? (Warren Throckmorton; The Christian Past That Wasn’t: Formerly Telling Jefferson Lies podcast)

Warren Throckmorton says:
Chapter 4 of The Christian Past That Wasn't takes up the question of this episode. This episode cites the book and expands on it as well.

In sum, I take the position that the experience of colonial and state governments are historically interesting but not directly relevant to our secular system of Constitutional government.

What the framers did in the Constitutional Convention is what is relevant.

In the book, I fact check claims about what the states required for office holders and I examine the ways different states handled church and state relationships. There was the Williams Way (Rhode Island and to some degree the mid-Atlantic states) and the Winthrop Way (Massachusetts and everybody else). This is not to say that America is a secular nation culturally speaking. If anything, the nation became more culturally Christian after the founders passed from the scene.

One of the reasons the founding era was reframed as a Christian founding was due to the heavy influence of Christianity in the expanding nation.
Produced, written, and hosted by Warren Throckmorton Slippery Rock University history professor Aaron Cowan and Dartmouth College religion professor Randall Balmer make appearances in this episode. Music by Jonas Fair, Jeremiah Lawson, and Netop. Book ordering options at www.christianpast.com.

"Deep Thoughts…By Josh Hawley" (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast) It's in the Code ep 192

Josh Hawley claims to present a "biblical" model of masculinity and masculine virtue. But if we look more closely, it turns out that Hawley's "Bible" is actually really weird. And so is his model of masculine kingship.

And what does "kingship" mean for Josh Hawley?

Well, pretty much the same thing you could read in any self-help book.

Join Dan for this week's episode as he tells us why.

C. S. Lewis and the Bible, with Leslie Baynes (Dan McClellan and Dan Beecher; Data Over Dogma podcast on YouTube)

Beloved novelist Clive Staples Lewis (Jack to his friends)(?) went through an atheist phase in his life. But that didn't last, and when he came back to Christianity, he came back HARD! Everyone who knows his work beyond life in a wardrobe is well aware of his obsession with the Bible and Christianity.

But though he was an academic, Lewis was careful to remind people he was not a Bible scholar. He relied on the scholarship of others when he wanted to explore biblical topics. Yet he wrote extensively. So how'd he do? Were his conclusions and explorations undergirded by good data, or was he just flying by the seat of his theological pants?

This week, we brought on Leslie Baynes, author of Between Interpretation and Imagination: C. S. Lewis and the Bible to help us get a handle on Lewis and his particular brand of apologetics. She'll guide us through his view of the Bible, his explorations of Christianity, and the places he snuck it all in, even when he wasn't explicitly writing about it.

The Bait & Switch Complex (Conspirituality podcast) #310

In the early 20th century, some retailers would advertise a product at an attractively low price to lure customers into the store, claim the item was out of stock or of poor quality then pressure customers to buy a more expensive alternative. The practice became known in the public vernacular as "bait and switch" in the 1920s.

This week, we look at three modern bait and switches pertinent to our beat. First, Julian looks at “free speech patriot” Chud the Builder’s slimy social media tactics. Then Derek investigates RFK Jr’s SNAP benefits now you see them, now you don’t. Finally, Matthew looks at how Mark Carney is bait and switching the Canadian political body.

The News Roundup – Domestic and International (The 1A) 2026-05-29

Domestic

The US and Iran appear to be close to a peace deal. That’s according to US officials, but it’s still awaiting President Trump approval. He’s reviewing the details today.

The deal would reportedly extend the ceasefire for 60 days, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and open talks over the future of Iran’s nuclear program.

We unpack the other big news of the week: Is the U.S ready for the Ebola outbreak? Conflict also erupted outside an ICE detention center in New Jersey, where detainees are on a hunger and labor strike. And major results out of the Texas runoff election.
Interview:

International

The Trump administration is continuing to squeeze Cuba’s communist regime with sanctions as it prepares for the possible collapse of the island’s totalitarian government as early as this summer, according to U.S officials.

And in another week of whiplash in the negotiations between the US and Iran, the countries appear on the cusp of a peace deal. The agreement would reportedly extend the ceasefire for 60 days, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and commit to negotiating Iran’s nuclear enrichment program. Though it still needs President Trump’s approval.

We also talk Europe, and how the E.U is dealing with multiple diplomatic challenges from the far right to Russia to the Trump administration.
Interview:

We like to win (Find Out Podcast on YouTube)

We here on the Find Out Podcast are a big fans of Democrats winning elections and we couldn't be happier with this week's news that Attorney General Ken Paxton (R-TX), who was endorsed by Trump, won his runoff election, unseating the incumbent U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) as the Republican nominee. Why are we excited about this? Because Paxton, who has been impeached by the Republican Super Majority in the Texas state legislature for embezzlement, busted for an extramarital affair and is generally hated by Cornyn voters and his fellow Texas Republicans, this creates an excellent opportunity for State Rep. James Talarico (D-TX) to finally flip Texas Blue. The last time Texas Democrats came close to flipping this seat was in 2018 when U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) narrowly defeated Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-TX) by 2.6%. On this episode, we'll make the case for why someone like Paxton is worse than Cruz. Talarico's ability to communicate effectively with religious Christian voters, coupled with Hispanic and Latino voters turning on Trump in large numbers, makes this a must watch race that could help the Democrats win the U.S. Senate this year.

We'll also discuss why conviction is the best weapon for Democrats to counter Republican messaging when pitching massive changes like universal health care. We also enjoyed watching Chelsea Handler and Pete Davidson destroy Tony Hinchcliffe at the Netflix Roast of Kevin Hart. We also crack down on corporations using investments in AI data centers to justify mass layoffs but those investments haven't been paying off. Also, we'll highlight how the tech billionaires like Marc Andreessen, Peter Thiel and Elon Musk want cheaper workers while J.D. Vance and Stephen Miller want more white workers.

Trump wants a gas tax holiday. There's a much bigger problem looming

"What we generally think is that over long periods of time, most of the tax cut would go to consumers," he says. "But over shorter periods of time, suppliers — even though it's fairly competitive to sell gas — they still have some market power." And that market power means they could hike their prices a little bit, eating into those tax savings and keeping some of the benefit for themselves…

And second, waiving the gas tax can increase demand for gasoline; that's the natural result of lower prices. That could worsen the supply-demand imbalance that's driving prices up…
