New 'do no harm' test targets low-earning college degrees : NPR

"We know we need nurses. We know we need journalists. We know we need early childhood educators," he said. "We don't know how many artists we need, but I can guarantee that if you eliminate access, we will impoverish our cultural life nationally."…

It's not just inflation. Wages are falling behind too : NPR

The Brookings affordability report found nearly 38 million households would be able to get by if workers' wages rose by $10 per hour. But that's a tall order in a nation where the federal minimum wage has been frozen at $7.25 an hour since 2009...

Gov. J.B. Pritzker On Invoking the 25th Amendment & Trump's Iran TACO Deal (Find Out podcast on YouTube)

We are very excited to have Governor J.B. Pritzker (D. IL) on the Find Out Podcast. Governor Pritzker has long been one of Trump's loudest critics, fighting him every step of the way. Last year, Governor Pritzker was the first Democratic Governor and potential 2028 presidential candidate to call for invoking the 25th Amendment. Pritzker renewed his call after Trump threatened to end Iran's whole civilization if they didn't meet his deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Despite reaching a two week ceasefire, Governor Pritzker also points out that Trump didn't really secure much of a deal with Iran after all his threats. In fact, Governor Pritzker points out that Mr. Art Of The Deal ended up with another TACO deal. It's very clear that something is mentally wrong with Trump, especially after this whole ordeal, and now is the perfect time to invoke the 25th Amendment.

Trump's illegal war with Iran wasn't the only thing on our minds when we interviewed the Governor. Pritzker opens up about how Trump still owes every American family $1,700 after the Supreme Court ruled his tariffs were illegal. The Governor also touches upon his ideas for Democrats to address affordability concerns including homeownership, raising wages and making it easier to join or start a union.

The hidden power keeping wages low : Planet Money : NPR

Monopsony is a cool word for an important idea, especially in labor markets: when employers face limited competition for workers, they gain power to pay them less and treat them worse than they otherwise could.

While Robinson and other scholars believed monopsony power could be a significant force in the economy, for a long time mainstream economists treated monopsonies as a kind of unicorn — found only in rare circumstances, like small towns with a single dominant employer or companies that employ highly specialized kinds of workers who don't have other job options.

But in a new book, The Wage Standard: What's Wrong in the Labor Market and How to Fix It, the economist Arindrajit Dube offers a theory — drawing on a growing body of peer-reviewed research — that monopsony power is much more widespread throughout the economy than previously thought, even in markets that at first blush seem rather competitive. And that matters because monopsony power could be used to suppress wages…

Wages aren't keeping up with inflation, with some jobs falling further behind than others - CBS News

Only about 54% of Americans say they are satisfied with their current wages, according to a new analysis from Federal Reserve Bank of New York. That represents the lowest satisfaction level since the NY Fed began tracking the measure in 2014.

Even high-income households, which contribute about half of all consumer spending and drive economic growth, are facing bigger financial hurdles, including surging delinquencies on credit cards and auto loans, according to recent research...

Breaking our democracy is all part of the GOP plan - Raw Story

These are the people Republicans are counting on to support transforming America from a democratic republic into a strongman authoritarian oligarchy. The GOP's bet is that if they can keep things broken and bad enough long enough, then people will demand a dictator "who can get things done."

They even hatched a scheme called Project 2025 that hyper-concentrates political power in the White House, pre-positioning the next Republican president to be America's first dictator.

The good news is that President Biden is actually doing something about each of these areas where Republicans have worked so hard for the past 43 years to break our country. And his work is producing good fruit: inflation is down, employment is up, wages are up, and consumer confidence is growing…

Why McDonald’s has been raising prices - Vox

Businesses don't merely charge what they must in order to meet expenses; they charge what they can get. When consumers have more money to spend, fast food chains tend to have more scope for raising prices without losing business. Since the pandemic, we've seen substantial increases in both demand for quick-service meals, and the costs of food and rent. So, wage growth is by no means solely responsible for the rising cost of Egg McMuffins...

Why so many people are paying to get their paychecks

For some cash-strapped workers, the solution can be found in an earned wage access app — an increasingly popular service that offers users early pay, often in exchange for a fee, for work they've already completed but haven't yet gotten a paycheck for...
