The War on Science (Conspirituality podcast, #316)

With so much emphasis on global politics and the World Cup in recent weeks, we’re going to focus on the somewhat quieter but intensely important bureaucratic dismantling of expertise occurring in health and science.

First, Derek looks into a recent 412-page OMB proposal that hands political appointees veto power over federal science grants, effectively killing peer review, blocking research on health disparities, and walling off American scientists from the rest of the world. Matthew counters with Canada’s own corrosive behavior.

Then we dig into the contradiction of MAHA: the pro-health movement running cover for the EPA quietly approving new forever chemical pesticides mere days after the Supreme Court gutted Americans’ ability to sue Monsanto (by way of their parent company, Bayer). Again, there’s a Canadian parallel: Bill C-30 hands cabinet the power to override Health Canada’s own scientists and approve pesticides they’ve already ruled unsafe.

Finally, Julian removes gravity from the situation by covering congressional UAP hearings where unverified whistleblower claims about alien bodies and secret programs get treated with peer-reviewed science seriousness.

Only, as with everything else in Trump’s America, the science is thin and the theater, thick.

Stopping A.I. From Destroying America with Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (Find Out podcast on YouTube)

A.I. already plays a role in so many aspects of our lives and lately, the negatives of A.I. have far outweighed the positives. Just ask a recent college graduate who's applied to hundreds of jobs and hasn't received a single response. While more companies have been using A.I. to scan resumes, the big issue is we don't know if these A.I. systems are breaking fair employment laws or showing any bias when fielding candidates.

On this episode of the Find Out Podcast, Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (D-CA), returns to talk about how her A.I. regulation bill, which has bipartisan support in Congress, would give the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission additional tools to prevent A.I. systems from breaking the law.

Our conversation with Congresswoman Jacobs doesn't just touch upon on A.I. guardrails. It's Congress's inability to fully understand the impact A.I. is having on the American electorate and how to keep up with and respond to this technology as it changes rapidly.

While states like California have done a better job at regulating A.I., President Donald Trump has also been doing the bidding of the A.I. industry to override states' ability to take action. We also have a misguided fixation on trying to out-China China in the A.I. arms race.

Congresswoman Jacobs argues that when Democrats retake the House in 2026 midterms, they will have a significant opportunity to future proof the government and push through A.I. protections that have a real impact.

We also take the time to discuss FISA reforms and enjoy seeing clowns like Nancy Mace and Spencer Pratt lose their primaries.

We like to win (Find Out Podcast on YouTube)

We here on the Find Out Podcast are a big fans of Democrats winning elections and we couldn't be happier with this week's news that Attorney General Ken Paxton (R-TX), who was endorsed by Trump, won his runoff election, unseating the incumbent U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) as the Republican nominee. Why are we excited about this? Because Paxton, who has been impeached by the Republican Super Majority in the Texas state legislature for embezzlement, busted for an extramarital affair and is generally hated by Cornyn voters and his fellow Texas Republicans, this creates an excellent opportunity for State Rep. James Talarico (D-TX) to finally flip Texas Blue. The last time Texas Democrats came close to flipping this seat was in 2018 when U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) narrowly defeated Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-TX) by 2.6%. On this episode, we'll make the case for why someone like Paxton is worse than Cruz. Talarico's ability to communicate effectively with religious Christian voters, coupled with Hispanic and Latino voters turning on Trump in large numbers, makes this a must watch race that could help the Democrats win the U.S. Senate this year.

We'll also discuss why conviction is the best weapon for Democrats to counter Republican messaging when pitching massive changes like universal health care. We also enjoyed watching Chelsea Handler and Pete Davidson destroy Tony Hinchcliffe at the Netflix Roast of Kevin Hart. We also crack down on corporations using investments in AI data centers to justify mass layoffs but those investments haven't been paying off. Also, we'll highlight how the tech billionaires like Marc Andreessen, Peter Thiel and Elon Musk want cheaper workers while J.D. Vance and Stephen Miller want more white workers.

Wendell Potter on The Healthcare Crisis (Al Franken podcast on YouTube)

In a major blow to American healthcare, Congress has let the ACA subsidies expire. This means higher premiums and, as a result, fewer Americans enrolling. We are joined by Wendell Potter, former VP of Corporate Communications for Cigna turned whistleblower and healthcare reform advocate. Since 2009, Wendell has pulled back the curtain on how insurance giants game the system to prioritize profits over patients.

Wendell shares the two stories demonstrating the inhumanity of the American healthcare system that pushed him to speak out. He also talks about the impact of the expiring subsidies and why it could be what he calls a "death spiral." But don't worry! Donald Trump has a plan... or at least concepts of a plan.

Al and Wendell talk about the accomplishments of the ACA, while also acknowledging that Democrats should have done more to strengthen it during the Biden administration. Now with Trump and the Republicans in charge, any chance at meaningful reform is out the window.

Plus, we revisit the December 2024 murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and why that struck a nerve with so many Americans.

Private school cancels $27,000 tuition bill for child who never enrolled - The Washington Post

Some schools have pursued high-stakes legal battles in search of lost tuition dollars, with cases at times leading to garnished wages and life-altering debt. Many are fairly straightforward cases of a family not paying after their child attended classes.

But others are against parents who withdrew their children or never sent them for reasons that include bullying and out-of-state moves.

In some cases, court records show, schools have gone after families who were granted financial assistance for attendance. In others, they have targeted parents who had not joined their ex-spouses in signing an enrollment contract...

$5 a dozen: major egg companies may be using avian flu to hike US prices, report finds

"Based on publicly available data, we've observed that egg price increases far exceed what would be expected based on hen losses and the industry has not increased the number of laying hens as expected during a period of high prices. This strongly suggests potential antitrust violations," said Angela Huffman, chief executive of Farm Action. "The FTC and DOJ have the authority to investigate beyond what is publicly available … we urge them to exercise this authority."…
