For far-right extremists, the rise of a new enemy: Women : NPR

"It has completely infected the white supremacist realm," Beirich said. "Misogyny is as important, I would argue, as racism or neo-Nazi-ism now to people that traffic in these kinds of ideas and live in these cultures."

"It is an ideology that is heavily invested in the idea of 'cultural degeneracy' and what are the sources of it," said Elliot Chandler, CFO and researcher at Revontulet, a Norway-based company that does online threat monitoring. "And historically, femininity and the excessive expression of femininity is a core aspect of degeneracy. That is the classic 'This is what the Nazis think' way of approaching it."

This panic over the "feminization" of society also plays a role in the extreme hostility toward LGBTQ+ people, and to inclusive agendas, said DiBranco…

Weekly Roundup: A Battle of Fonts and Freedoms: Analyzing Trump’s Authoritarianism and Growing Unpopularity (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

Brad and Dan return to unpack another week of chaos, contradictions, and creeping authoritarianism in American politics. They open with what seems like a small story but carries outsized symbolic weight: the State Department’s decision to ditch Calibri and return to Times New Roman. It’s a font change driven not by aesthetics but by politics, revealing how the Trump administration is using even bureaucratic details to signal exclusion, target accessibility, and roll back DEI efforts. What looks trivial becomes a window into the deeper logic of authoritarian control.

From there, the conversation widens to the issues shaping the country’s political landscape. Brad and Dan examine ICE’s ever expanding budget, the ongoing manipulation of the election system through voter roll purges and gerrymandering, and a string of contentious congressional hearings, including Kristi Noem’s abrupt walkout and the FBI’s admission that it cannot define Antifa as a coherent organizational threat. They also discuss Trump’s increasingly explicit racist and misogynistic rhetoric and the striking silence from GOP leaders who once claimed to stand for democratic norms.

Despite the bleak headlines, Brad and Dan highlight signs that Trump’s influence may be eroding. They point to GOP resistance emerging in places like Indiana, rumblings of discontent within the Heritage Foundation, and encouraging gains for Democrats in state legislatures and mayoral races. But they also wrestle with the central tension of the moment: does Trump’s declining popularity matter if structural control continues to consolidate beneath him. Can the MAGA movement build enduring institutions, or is it fundamentally a brittle coalition held together by grievance and spectacle.

Pastors Speak Truth on Charlie Kirk | Why I Fear for Them Now

In this video, we highlight powerful sermons from Christian pastors who spoke out after Charlie Kirk’s death. They refused to stay silent about his racist, divisive, and hateful rhetoric — even as flags were lowered to honor him.

There are very few pastors left in America who still preach the truth about racism, misogyny, and white nationalism in the church. These voices deserve to be heard — and they deserve our prayers, because speaking truth to power has consequences.

With Attorney General Pam Bondi and Trump allies vowing to punish anyone who criticizes Kirk, I fear these pastors may be the next targets. If celebrities like Jimmy Kimmel can be silenced, what happens to pastors telling the truth from the pulpit?

Brief: The Cult of Crossfit (Conspirituality podcast)

When cultural and psychological anthropologist Katie Rose Hejtmanek set out to study Crossfit, she knew she had to throw herself into it fully. For seven years, she traveled to “boxes” around the world while committing herself to her local Brooklyn box. What she uncovered was a rabid fan base that deeply values community and a business model that offers a refreshing response to unfettered capitalism—as well as the misogyny, racism, and militarized Christian themes that inform this beloved and despised fitness regimen. She joins Derek to discuss her new book, The Cult of CrossFit: Christianity and the American Exercise Phenomenon.

Trump supporters lay claim to women’s bodies after his election win

In just a 24-hour span after the election, researchers reportedly found a "4,600% increase in mentions of the terms 'your body, my choice' and 'get back in the kitchen' on X." The report refers to multiple social media users who said they or their children were told "your body, my choice" in class. The researchers found tens of thousands of accounts using the phrase "dumb c--t" to refer to Vice President Kamala Harris and other women on Election Day itself, using an insult Elon Musk's super PAC referred to in a suggestive anti-Harris ad. And the researchers also found calls for "rape" and "rape squads" garnered thousands of views on social media after last week's election...

‘No man will touch me until I have my rights back’: why is the 4B movement going viral after Trump’s win? | US elections 2024 | The Guardian

The basic idea: women swear off heterosexual marriage, dating, sex and childbirth in protest against institutionalized misogyny and abuse. (It is called 4B in reference to these four specific no-nos.) The mostly online movement began around 2018 protests against revenge porn and grew into South Korea's #MeToo-esque feminist wave…

Misogyny, Breeding, and the Right’s “Sacred” Family (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

We are thrilled to introduce an audio essay by Anika Brockschmidt, a Berlin-based journalist who spent three days at the National Conservatism Conference (NatCon).

Anika’s insights critically examine recent trends within the American right, particularly focusing on themes of misogyny, fertility, and family values. The discussion spotlights notable figures like J.D. Vance and Kamala Harris, and addresses the resurgence of patriarchy and natalism in American politics.

Anika also highlights the influence of global right-wing alliances and the problematic rhetoric of folkish ideology. The episode sheds light on the mainstreaming of National Conservatism within the GOP and its implications for the future.

Women drinking beer clothed: why are rightwingers melting down over Miller Lite?

As you've probably noticed, the word "woke" has been entirely wrung of any meaning in recent years. BlackRock and Silicon Valley Bank are "woke", according to the right. Walt Disney is woke. Pope Francis is woke. Even the US military industrial complex is woke.

The newest target? Miller Lite. Conservatives are hopping mad after discovering a two-month-old Miller Lite commercial that was released during Women's History Month...

Experts fear rising global ‘incel’ culture could provoke terrorism

Academics from the University of Exeter also noted an increasing overlap between incel followers and the far right, with online algorithms blamed for pushing young boys towards extreme rightwing ideology. …
The incel – or "involuntarily celibate" – movement is an online subculture in which a misogynistic worldview is promoted by individuals who blame women for their lack of sexual activity. …
Another involves Gabrielle Friel, who in 2019 amassed weapons in preparation for a terrorist attack in Scotland and who "idolised" incel Elliot Rodger, who killed six people in California in 2014. One concerning dynamic, said Brace, was how boys as young as 12 were being drawn into misogynistic ideology.

Opinion | In his draft on ‘Roe,’ Alito cites the work of a blatant misogynist - The Washington Post

There are at least two problems with Alito's reliance on history. First, Alito has misrepresented the actual historical record. As abundant historical research establishes, the common law that governed America in its first decades and beyond did not regulate abortion before "quickening" — the moment when a pregnant woman first detects fetal movement, which can happen as late as 25 weeks into pregnancy...

How Can I Teach When I’m Not Allowed to Shut Down Trolls? - The New York Times

"I'm a professor at a branch campus of a large state-university system in a state that has passed — and is planning to pass more — laws dictating what (and how) we can teach in our classrooms. These laws are intentionally vague and allow almost any material related to several important topics to be called into question. This has emboldened a small but very vocal part of our student body to disrupt classrooms whenever issues of race, gender, religion or sexuality are raised…"
