Claims of noncitizens on voter rolls leave states baffled : NPR

Five claims the president made in primetime address not backed up by evidence
…The Department of Homeland Security did not reveal its methodology for identifying the noncitizens and how confident they were in their assessment. The tool the Department of Homeland Security uses to flag noncitizens on the voter rolls is known to be inaccurate.
Letters from the Department of Homeland Security sent on Thursday to Nevada and Pennsylvania obtained by the Guardian also suggest that the government is much less certain that the people identified are actually noncitizens. The Nevada letter says the department identified as many as 15,903 noncitizens who were registered to vote, including 8,576 whose name, date of birth, address and social security number matched that of a noncitizen in its files. It did not say how it flagged the remaining potential noncitizens. .
“These numbers are wildly speculative at best and the Department of Homeland Security hasn’t shared anything that backs it up,” Cisco Aguilar, the Democratic Nevada secretary of state, said in a statement…

Trump's address may focus on the 2020 election. Here's what to know about foreign interference, voting security | PBS News
In 2016, Russian agents used hacking and disinformation campaigns in an attempt to tilt the election in Trump's favor, government reports have shown. Special Counsel Robert Mueller, tasked with investigating it, found no criminal coordination between Moscow and the Trump campaign.
There are multiple safeguards protecting elections from foreign interference, including regularly audited paper records for 98% of votes cast in almost every state, Norden said.
The Trump administration has cut back on election security efforts launched during his first term, such as the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. In a 2020 post-election tweet, Trump fired the head of CISA, Chris Krebs, after the agency released a statement that affirmed the election's security...

Will Trump try to seize voting machines to disrupt the midterm elections?
Gabbard and Trump could start seizing machines across the country while claiming to look for evidence of interference, while stating in court that they don't have to disclose what they're looking for or how long they'll be looking because doing so would violate national security and the sanctity of the investigation, Choe said...

State election officials brace for possible Trump interference in midterm results - POLITICO
"The things that have been said publicly, frankly, are quite appalling," Henderson said to White House Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs Jared Borg as several of her colleagues and reporters looked on, referencing comments from the Department of Justice attacking states for not complying with its request for voter rolls across the country, a move that has confused — and frustrated — many state election officials.
The DOJ "pretty much slandered all of us to publicly claim that secretaries of state are not doing our jobs and that the federal government has to do it for us. Not OK," Henderson said during a question-and-answer session...
‘Grind the country to a halt’: Democrat urges national strike if Trump meddles in midterms
"We have to prepare for the outmost scenario, the worst scenario, which is they try to either capture the ballot box as ballots are being counted, they try to stop the count, they try to surround polling places, whatever it is," he told the Court of History podcast with political historians Sidney Blumenthal and Sean Wilentz.

Maga loyalist expands investigation into intelligence officials who angered Trump
"There is simply no factual basis for this investigation. It violates both DoJ and FBI standards that require a factual predicate. It is a fishing expedition where it has been clearly established – by two prior independent counsel investigations and a congressional investigation led by the current Secretary of State – there are no fish," he said. Bromwich added: "The government has refused to provide the basis for venue in Florida, nor has it been willing to describe the statutory violations it is pursuing. That is unprecedented in my 40 plus years of federal criminal practice.",..

Judge dismisses Georgia criminal case against Donald Trump - POLITICO
"There is no realistic prospect that a sitting President will be compelled to appear in Georgia to stand trial on the allegations in this indictment," wrote Peter Skandalakis, a prosecutor who assigned himself the case after failing to find another prosecutor to take it over. "Donald J. Trump's current term as President of the United States of America does not expire until January 20, 2029; by that point, eight years will have elapsed" since the alleged crimes in question...

They also turn their attention to JD Vance’s recent appearances at Ole Miss and Turning Point USA, where his rhetoric blends Christian nationalism, white supremacy, and populist theater. From his calls to teach Christianity in schools to his public remarks about his Hindu wife, Vance uses religion as a political weapon while appealing to the MAGA base. Yet amid the darkness, Brad and Dan highlight reasons for hope, including legal and judicial pushback against extreme policies and bipartisan resistance in the Senate.
