Republicans threaten Canada with sanctions over drifting wildfire smoke

Asked about the American accusations, Carney told reporters on Thursday: “Fighting climate change is the responsibility of all countries, including the United States.”

The premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, said on Friday that the US could offer more aid to fight the fires, as Canada has done for its neighbor in the past. “Maybe what you should do rather than complain is send support, send help,” Ford said. “Because we have done the exact same thing for our American friends, and that’s what you’re supposed to do.”

Republicans complain to Canada over wildfire smoke despite supporting planet-heating bill

"Our communities shouldn't suffer because of poor decisions made across the border," Tom Tiffany, a Republican congressman from Wisconsin and one of the letter's authors, wrote on X.

However, all of the authors of the letter – Tiffany, Brad Finstad, Tom Emmer, Glenn Grothman, Michelle Fischbach and Pete Stauber – voted for the so-called "big, beautiful" Republican spending bill that, among other things, slashes support for renewable energy and provides new incentives for the production of fossil fuels...

Trump faces criticism over California dam water release - Los Angeles Times

For Peter Gleick, a water scientist and senior fellow at the Pacific Institute, Trump's actions amounted to wasting billions of gallons of water "for a political photo op and a social media post."

California Officials Fact-Check Trump’s Latest Claim About The State’s Water Supply | HuffPost Latest News

Republican congressman calls for halting of disaster relief to California

"In the spirit of this great country, we must not politicize human tragedy or spread disinformation from the sidelines," Newsom wrote in a letter to Trump on Friday. "Hundreds of thousands of Americans – displaced from their homes and fearful for the future – deserve to see all of us working in their best interests to ensure a fast recovery and rebuild."

But hours later, Newsom amplified comments critical of Trump in an interview with Pod Save America in which he rejected Trump's claim that water is being withheld to save the endangered fish, calling the messaging "delusional" and "a consistent mantra from Trump going back years and years, and it's reinforced over and over within the right wing ... and it's profoundly ignorant".

US rightwing fans misinformation fires as firefighters battle Los Angeles blazes

The misinformation echoes the claims that plagued the North Carolina hurricane response. Both disasters led to righteous outrage that partisan actors seize upon to advance their political goals, muddying the already confusing information ecosystem that comes along with a fast-moving news event.

In what has become a common theme, rightwing media and commentary have said that diversity within the Los Angeles fire department is to blame for the devastation...
