More Americans are going bankrupt. What does that mean? : NPR

Experts say this shows that a growing number of Americans have reached the point where the pressure of their debt has overcome the stigma of bankruptcy.

"It's telling us that consumers are having a harder time coping with their financial obligations," said Sasha Indarte, a professor of finance at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School...

Watchdog warns of risks to patients as private equity’s stake in US healthcare grows

One of the most heavily scrutinized practices of healthcare investors, including in the case of Steward, is the sale-leaseback. In a sale-leaseback, a healthcare provider (often a hospital) sells the property to an REIT. The property is then leased back to the hospital. Sale-leasebacks provide a cash infusion to both partners in the venture, investors and the healthcare business, but have been criticized for saddling hospitals – many of which were built on the public dime – with added expenses…

Why the U.S. cattle herd is at a 75-year low — and what it means for beef prices : NPR

A number of factors have been pushing livestock numbers down, including rising costs, drought, international competition and increased consolidation in the cattle industry. Now, there are fewer American farmers and ranchers than there were even a few years ago, according to Bill Bullard, CEO of the cattle and sheep producers group R-CALF USA. "We have likewise lost the cows that they once maintained," he said. "So we have seen our herd shrink at an alarming rate for the past several decades."…

Understanding the impact on the economy of tariffs and BBB tax cuts fit the wealthy

The recent 30 Year Treasury Auction was a disaster for the Trump administration. This is one of the primary funding mechanisms for the federal government and a signal of global faith in the U.S. economy. Demand for U.S. Treasuries was weaker than expected pushing yields uncomfortably high and increasing the cost of servicing the ballooning deficit. Trump’s tariff war is already showing up in inflation data with the worst yet to come. Everything is coming to a head to expose the fallacy of trickle down tax cuts and tariffs as a way to grow the economy and balance the budget. The market has spoken and it’s a bad sign of what’s to come as the administration runs out of runway to get the economy off the ground.

The Dave Ramsey Takedown (Dan McClellan; Data Over Dogma podcast, episode #102)

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the big fight! In the red corner: personal finance guru and guy who makes millions by making poorer people feel bad about their debt, Dave "how's your retirement fund looking?" Ramsey. And in the blue corner: with a much lighter pocketbook but much heavier t-shirt collection, Dan "alright let's see it" McClellan.

What could a Bible scholarship show possibly have to say about a personal finance guy, you might ask. Well, Mr. Ramsey styles himself a Christian personal finance guy, and in that capacity makes some pretty interesting claims. So, while we are not qualified to check him on his finance advice, when he veers into our lane, he's fair game. And boy, did that guy veer!

Then, the Deuteronomist abides. There may be some ten dollar words ahead (words that Dan Beecher may or may not be able to pronounce), but don't let that fool you: the Deuteronomistic history is actually fascinating.

Trump’s fusillade of falsehoods on debt and taxes - The Washington Post

Even before covid, the deficit had worsened under Trump. But such rhetoric is in keeping with his effort to suggest the economy was booming before the pandemic — when in fact it was beginning to stumble. In all of 2019, manufacturing was in a mild recession, with some large manufacturers blaming Trump's trade wars for slumping sales...

Navient Will Cancel Private Student Loans. Most Don’t Know About It. - The New York Times

More than a million borrowers who were defrauded by for-profit schools have had billions of dollars in federal student loans eliminated through a government aid program. But people with private loans have generally been excluded from any relief — until recently.

U.S. debt is growing as possible government shutdown looms - The Washington Post

"Unlike House Republicans, President Biden takes reducing the deficit seriously — and he will continue calling out Republicans for their hypocrisy on the debt," White House spokesman Michael Kikukawa said in a statement. The statement also emphasized that Biden's budget proposals would reduce the deficit by trillions of dollars through higher taxes on the rich and corporations.

Still, Republicans are likely to also continue insisting that they are more responsible fiscal stewards. But GOP leaders are pushing to extend roughly $3.3 trillion in tax cuts, including breaks for large businesses and a reduction in the estate tax paid only by a small minority of wealthy families...

Texas Newspaper Calls Out Trump For Stiffing El Paso For Old Rally Expenses | HuffPost Latest News

As for El Paso, the campaign still owes the police department alone more than $381,000. A Trump campaign spokesperson told ABC last year, two years after the rally:
"We are reviewing" the bill. The city hired a collection firm to go after Trump in 2020, but so far hasn't recovered anything, the Chronicle reported Saturday.
"It shows a lack of concern for the community and the taxpaying voters of El Paso," city council Rep. Alexsandra Annello told the El Paso Times last year...
