DHS chief defends New York ICE shooting, calling victim one of ‘the worst of the worst’ - POLITICO

Mamdani accused the administration Thursday of refusing to release Belgal and said ICE endangered communities. He and other progressives also called for the abolition of ICE.

In Mullin’s telling, however, President Donald Trump offered to release Belgal into the custody of the New York Police Department, but Mamdani declined that offer. Mullin also said that Hochul told him that she’d like to help ICE apprehend criminals but also said she wanted to see a pause for now on enforcement…

New York and California sue to block Trump's plans to cancel offshore wind projects | PBS News

"Americans are facing increasing energy costs because this administration would rather pay off energy companies than let us build the new power sources we need," James said in a statement. "These illegal backroom deals take money that should have gone toward lowering New Yorkers' bills and hand it to fossil fuel projects in other states."…

Judge strikes down New York law that forced climate polluters to pay damages

“The fossil fuel industry would like nothing more than for one district court ruling in New York to scare lawmakers across the country into backing down, but this decision doesn’t bind other states or stop them from passing their own laws,” said DiPaola.

“If allowed to stand, some of the richest corporations in history get to walk away from $75bn they owe New Yorkers. The floods will still come, roads will still wash out and communities will still need billions to protect themselves.”

Judge again rejects Trump’s bid to move criminal hush money case to federal court - POLITICO

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein is a blow to Trump’s attempt to effectively erase the prosecution altogether by suggesting it wrongly wrongly punished him for official acts he took as president during his first term. But Hellerstein concluded that Trump’s payments, routed through attorney Michael Cohen to Daniels, were entirely “private” conduct, not related to his presidency...

Teachers decry plan for humanoid robot in New York high school

Realbotix has denied ties to the sex doll company, and denied any inferences that the dolls – manufactured by Abyss Creations, a subsidiary of Realbotix – are related to the pilot program. “

The Salamanca teachers’ union as a whole is concerned about the background of the company of Realbotix. We’re very concerned about the security of the software that they’re implementing, and whether or not the data will be stored, how it will be gathered, are the recording capabilities,” said Lacey Pihlblad, president of Salamanca Teachers’ Association and a teacher at the high school…

“The answer to the challenges in education is not more screens, it’s not more algorithms, not more robots. What we need in our schools right now are more caring adults and more human connection,” she said…

Appeals court rules against ICE’s mandatory detention policy - POLITICO

In a 3-0 ruling, a panel of the New York-based 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals found that ICE’s policy was based on a flawed, implausible and unprecedented interpretation of decades-old laws. But more fundamentally, the panel said the Trump administration’s position would raise acute constitutional concerns by instituting “the broadest mass detention-without-bond mandate in our Nation’s history for millions of noncitizens.”…

AP report: Trump administration admits a glaring error in its New York health fraud accusations | PBS News

NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump's administration this week acknowledged it made a significant error in figures it used to help justify a fraud probe into New York's Medicaid program, a glaring mistake that undercuts a federal campaign to tackle waste, mostly in Democratic-led states.

The error, which the administration admitted first to The Associated Press, prompted health analysts to question how many of the Republican administration's sweeping anti-fraud efforts around the country were based on faulty findings. One of a few mischaracterizations it made about New York's Medicaid program, it also reflected a common criticism that's been made of Trump's second administration — that it tends to attack first and confirm the facts later…

Federal judge reverses Trump’s freeze on $16bn for NY-NJ tunnel project

The US district judge Jeannette Vargas in New York on Friday handed down the temporary ruling hours after New York and New Jersey authorities said construction would halt for lack of funding.

Vargas said the states were likely to succeed on their claims that a Trump administration directive freezing the funds was arbitrary and ran afoul of legal procedures for making policy changes...
