JD Vance pitches himself as Trump’s political heir on day two of Republican midterm convention

Vice-president dog-whistled, exaggerated claims of success and echoed Trump talking points to excited audience…

Addressing Democratic “radicals”, whom he accused of wanting to destroy the nuclear American family, he boomed: “Stay the hell away from our kids.”

But it was also a speech aimed squarely at rallying the Maga faithful: attacking transgender rights, extolling the importance of American manufacturing and religious freedom, and accusing Democrats of “doubling down on the crazy”.

Vance showed a penchant, too, for Trump’s baseless statements, claiming that some Democrats in New York “cheered on” the slaughter of Jewish people on 7 October, and suggesting that a “new generation” of Democrats seek to defund the police and “abolish the border”.

“What is it that drives this new generation of radical Democrats? It’s not new policies. They’ll say the same stuff: defund the police, abolish the border, the green new scam. We’ve heard all this stuff before,” Vance said. He then tried out a new line: “I think that what’s new about them is what motivates them is a new type of hardcore hatred.”…

Vance doesn't want to talk 2028. Republicans are chanting ‘48.’ - POLITICO

Vance, continuing a theme that President Donald Trump laid out Wednesday, told the attendees that 2026 presented a stark choice between commonsense Republicans and the “crazy people” on the left, according to the people, who were granted anonymity to discuss the closed-door event...

Bernie Sanders Lets Loose on the Democratic Party, the Midterms and 2028 - POLITICO

Sanders’ operation has reached out to hundreds of would-be candidates and put them through a kind of political boot camp. “How do I run for office? How do I run for state legislature? What is a press release? How do I raise money? Kind of basics, politics 101,” Sanders said. “A lot of those folks are now getting their feet wet. Many of them are winning. And in a few years, you’re going to be hearing from them as they run for Congress or Senate or whatever.”

So, I ask him, it’s a bench, built to ensure the movement continues beyond his own career? “

Well, that’s exactly it,” Sanders said…

Ro Khanna on a 2028 presidential run and taking on tech billionaires : NPR's Newsmakers : NPR

Khanna said Democrats need to nominate a progressive who will usher in "America's next New Deal" as the country's technological revolution enriches a select few and risks destabilizing the country's labor force.

"These folks would have been the conquerors in a different era. They kind of think of themselves as above you and I," Khanna said of tech billionaires Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Peter Thiel. "And when I'm actually most inclined to run, I think, 'I know these people.' I understand the economic future, and I will have the guts to stand up to them."…

Why does JD Vance keep saying loony things?

Vance is sending a clear message to Trump’s dedicated base that he’s just as good at stirring up hate and grievance as the man they elected twice as president. Better at it than the more moderate Marco Rubio, the secretary of state who is his most likely competitor for the 2028 Republican nomination.

In essence, he’s saying something like this: I might have written serious books and have a law degree from Yale but don’t worry, I hate the same people you do. And governmental malfeasance doesn’t rattle me.

As former labor secretary Robert Reich wrote recently, “Vance resembles Trump in every way – he lies effortlessly, he’s utterly without principle, and he’s intent on gaining power – except that he’s smarter and more ruthless than Trump.” Thus, a more dangerous demagogue...

Young Male Voters Aren't Anti-Democrat, They're Anti-Failure (Find Out podcast on YouTube)

Since President Obama won the presidency in 2008, Democrats have long believed that younger voters would automatically vote Democratic because of the Republican Party's extreme positions on social issues.

But the 2024 election disproved that when Donald Trump made significant gains with male Gen Z voters proving that the Democrats have a young male problem. While the same Gen Z male voters who voted for Trump have soured on him in large numbers, this doesn't mean they will automatically swing back to the Democrats in the 2026 midterms; however, they remain a winnable voting block.

On this episode of the Find Out Podcast, we're joined by Arianna Jones, executive director of NextGen America, to provide insight into what Gen Z voters, especially male Gen Z voters, view on the state of the two party system. Jones confirms many of our theories about why 44% of Gen Z voters are unaffiliated and the type of political leaders they want in charge.

We also gain a better understanding of how Gen Z realizes the real threat of fascism under Trump's second term and the growing anxiety surrounding AI under the control of billionaires like Elon Musk. There's a lot to dive into in this episode but one thing is clear: Democrats cannot take Gen Z voters for granted. Especially since they will make up more than 50 million eligible voters in time for the 2028 election.

The evangelical primary has already started. Rubio has the early edge on Vance. - POLITICO

For many in these circles, it comes down to a simple calculus: Rubio has spent decades earning their trust on faith and policy — while Vance, despite his platform and base, has left key anti-abortion and pro-Israel constituencies on edge...

Slotkin leaves door open to 2028 bid - POLITICO

“I believe in a Jewish state of Israel, yes. And to me that isn’t a radical thing to say,” Slotkin said. “I can say that in the same breath that I criticize the military policy of Bibi Netanyahu.”…

Harris gives her clearest signal she is mounting a 2028 presidential bid - POLITICO

Later, the cheers for Harris grew to such a tenor, Sharpton jokingly admonished the crowd: “This is a convention, not a revival.”

Harris repeatedly attacked President Donald Trump — on Iran, foreign policy and voting rights, among other topics — throughout her conversation with Sharpton. But she also nodded to the influence Trump and the GOP had on certain voters of color in 2024, when a significant number of Black and Latino men decided to move away from the Democratic Party. Democrats, she said, shouldn’t expect support because of longstanding relationships…

‘Vance Is Handcuffed’: The Tech Fight Bedeviling 2028 Republicans - POLITICO

AI is poised to strike directly at the contradictions embedded within the new coalition that Trump has built: It will pit the new blue-collar members of the GOP base against the business-aligned sector that Trump has increasingly won over in his second term. It will pit family-values and religious conservatives against the newly emboldened tech wing.

And it is a policy issue that could prove particularly problematic for the 2028 contenders who are closest to Trump, because the Trump White House is pursuing an agenda on AI that is out of step with what many Trump-aligned voters and influencers want — especially the more populist elements that are increasingly prominent in the GOP's ranks...

These Gen-Z Trump voters don’t want JD Vance in 2028 - POLITICO

"I don't think Vance can win, because I think he's too connected to the current political establishment in Washington, which I think has a very negative approval rating right now," said Sam Z., a voter in Minnesota. "If you look at what he was about in 2018, 2019, 2020, and you look at what he's about now, it's very, very different. … Somebody younger running in office would be awesome. So that's the one thing I wouldn't mind for Vance. But overall, I just don't think [he] can win. I think he's kind of flip-flopped on a lot of issues."…

'Despicable toady’ – and 2028 candidate in all but name

Joe Walsh, a former Republican congressman turned Democrat, said: "He's absolutely risen to the occasion: he's a thoroughly despicable, dishonest toady for Donald Trump, and he's doing it wonderfully.

"He's the clear frontrunner because he's utterly shameless and he's done and said everything that Trump wants him to do and say. He's done a great job and positioned himself to be the guy."…
