Missouri supreme court throws out new congressional maps backed by Trump

The decision Thursday marks a rare setback for Republicans in a national redistricting battle. Republicans had hoped Missouri’s new congressional boundaries could help them win an additional seat and hold on to their slim House majority in the midterms. The ruling still could be appealed to the US supreme court...

Proportional representation has majority support in new poll : NPR

Earlier this summer, about 500 democracy and legal experts sent a letter to Congress urging members to consider proportional representation as a solution to the redistricting brinksmanship set off by President Trump last year.

"There should be little doubt that the single-member district system is failing to deliver fair and representative outcomes," they wrote. "We urge Congress to adopt a proportional system of representation, solving the gerrymandering problem at its source."…

Missouri rejects citizens’ bid for vote on Trump-backed redistricting plan

Supporters of the referendum had submitted hundreds of thousands of petition signatures in an effort to force a November election on whether to use a new US House map approved by the Republican-led state legislature. But the Republican secretary of state, Denny Hoskins, asserted on Tuesday that the petition was void because congressional redistricting plans cannot be subject to voter referendums…

“Secretary of State Hoskins is making a last desperate attempt to silence the people’s voice in Missouri,” Richard von Glahn, executive director of People Not Politicians Missouri, said in a statement, while asserting there were more than enough signatures to qualify the referendum for the ballot.

Republican disenfranchisement bid drives Black voters to polls, study finds

A new analysis of Black voters in the south indicates that Republican attempts to dilute their political power is driving them to the polls in larger numbers and shifting their counties further left.

After the supreme court effectively gutted section 2 of the Voting Rights Act protections in late April, Republican legislatures across the south rapidly pushed to disenfranchise Black voters by redrawing congressional maps. Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee and Alabama all immediately worked to pass new maps, while the Mississippi governor has said that he wants legislators to redraw maps before the upcoming midterm elections...

Clyburn’s seat survives for now as South Carolina Republicans buck Trump on redistricting - POLITICO

South Carolina Republicans defied President Donald Trump and blocked a redistricting measure that would have drawn out the state’s lone Democrat, Rep. Jim Clyburn.

The move Tuesday all but kills their chances of flipping that seat for 2026. It’s possible the GOP will still draw out Clyburn before 2028...

Judge weighs effort to block new Florida congressional map - POLITICO

“The evidence here is staggering,” asserted Christina Ford, a lawyer with the Elias Law Group. “This case is simple because the violations of the Fair Districts amendment were announced in a live legislative session for everyone to see. This case is simple because defendants do not attempt to justify the lines and districts that they drew.”…

Texas Supreme Court rejects bid to oust House Democrats who fled state over redistricting - POLITICO

“Abbott sent us threats. He sent lawyers. He sicced his lapdog, Ken Paxton, on us,” Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu said in a statement. “He asked the highest court in Texas to remove elected Democrats from office because we refused to be bullied into helping him pass a rigged map for Donald Trump. Today, the Republican-controlled Supreme Court said: no. The Constitution does not let a Governor erase voters’ choices when their choices are inconvenient to him.”…

Supreme Court rejects bid to restore Virginia congressional map favoring Democrats | PBS News

The Supreme Court typically doesn't intervene in state court proceedings unless they present an issue of federal law. Virginia Democrats had hoped to persuade the justices that the Virginia court misread federal law and Supreme Court precedent that hold that, even if early voting is underway, an election does not happen until Election Day itself...
