Chinese Company Launches Wind-Powered Data Center at the Bottom of the Sea

This week, Chinese firm HiCloud broke the mold by launching the first phase of the 24 megawatt facility off the coast of Shanghai, claiming a world first. According to New Atlas, 95 percent of the data center's energy comes from offshore wind, while the facility itself is cooled by the cold ocean current…

The sudden warming of Britain’s seas will tear through ocean life like a wildfire

It is one of this year's nastier surprises. Sea temperatures are up to 5C higher than usual, in part due to human-induced global heating, and in part as a result of this year's El NiƱo effect. It is a mortal reminder of how the sea dominates our entire planet – that a cycle of warm water in the distant Pacific should impact so severely on our local shores. As water temperatures reach an all-time high, the direct effect on wildlife – from seagrass to oysters and fish – will be devastating, the way "wildfires take out huge areas of forest", as one scientist says...

Hottest ocean temperatures in history recorded last year

…Warmer ocean waters are helping supercharge storms, hurricanes and extreme rainfall, the paper states, which is escalating the risks of severe flooding. Heated ocean water expands and eats away at the vast Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, which are collectively shedding around 1tn tons of ice a year, with both of these processes fueling sea level rise...

The scientists fighting to save the ocean’s most important carbon capture system - The Washington Post

… Kelp forests cover a quarter of the world's coastlines, stretching from Antarctica to Australia, Mexico to Alaska, providing food and shelter for thousands of species, while sucking carbon from the atmosphere. But over the past decade, thanks to warming waters and overfishing, they're disappearing...

Newly hatched Florida sea turtles are consuming dangerous quantities of floating plastic

Plastic pollution has been found in practically every environment on the planet, with especially severe effects on ocean life. Plastic waste harms marine life in many ways – most notably, when animals become entangled in it or consume it.

Top Fossil Fuel Companies Responsible for Majority of Ocean Acidification | Union of Concerned Scientists

A peer-reviewed study published today in the scientific journal Environmental Research Letters found that emissions traced to the world’s largest fossil fuel companies are responsible for more than half of the ocean’s acidification since pre-industrial times.

Climate change is way worse on ocean animals - Futurity

Global warming has caused twice as many ocean-dwelling species as land-dwelling species to disappear from their habitats, researchers report. The greater vulnerability of sea creatures may significantly impact human communities that rely on fish and shellfish for food and economic activity, according to the new study. It's the first to compare cold-blooded marine and land species' sensitivity to warming and their ability to find refuge from the heat while staying in their normal habitats...

Oceans heating faster than previously thought: study - Raw Story

The world's oceans have absorbed 60 percent more heat than previously thought over the last quarter of a century, scientists said Thursday, leaving Earth more sensitive still to the effects of climate change. Oceans cover more than two thirds of the planet's surface and play a vital role in sustaining life on Earth. ....
