What's behind the 'pronatalist' movement to boost the birth rate? (Tonya Mosley; Fresh Air podcast)

A once-fringe movement claims having more babies is the only way to save civilization. NPR reporter Lisa Hagen and sociologist Karen Guzzo explain who's empowering pronatalism today.

This is FRESH AIR. I'm Tonya Mosley. Have more babies, or civilization dies. That's the rallying cry behind a once fringe ideology that has made its way into the mainstream. Pronatalism has been in the news lately, with Trump policies underway to increase birth rates by giving away a $5,000 baby bonus for parents and a national medal of motherhood for moms who have six or more children. Pronatalists warn of an apocalyptic future - that if birth rates in the U.S. keep falling, we might be headed towards economic collapse, even extinction. They're pushing ideas like genetic engineering, limiting access to contraceptives, and the "great replacement" conspiracy theory, which believes that there is a plot to replace white populations with nonwhite immigrants.

One of the more well-known faces of the movement is Elon Musk, who reportedly has at least 14 biological children with several different women and has called the world's population decline the greatest threat to humanity. But critics argue that this movement isn't solely about increasing birth rates. It's about who gets to reproduce, under what terms and at what cost? They argue that this movement ignores the skyrocketing price of child care in our country, our broken parental leave systems and a woman's autonomy over her own body.

Well, today, we're joined by two people whose work explores this movement and the motivations behind it. Dr. Karen Guzzo is a sociologist and fertility expert serving as the director of the Carolina Population Center and a professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. And Lisa Hagen is a reporter for NPR who has been covering the pronatal movement and attended last month's second annual Natal Con conference in Austin. Lisa Hagen and Karen Guzzo, welcome to FRESH AIR.

Opinion | Manliness, Cat Ladies, Fertility Panic and the 2024 Election - The New York Times

It wants to shame anyone who doesn't have kids. It wants to undermine their legitimacy as full participants in political and I would even say cultural and civilizational life.

What does it mean to be pro-family? Is it to support people in finding the life path they want to walk, whether that's becoming a parent or not? That's more or less what Kamala Harris believes.

Or is it to use policy and culture to push people to have children? To reward them for having more children? To demean and even punish them for choosing to not have children? That's more or less what JD Vance and the people who have influenced him believe...

Why Are So Many Americans Choosing to Not Have Children? - The New York Times

"It's not about being selfish and saying, 'I'm not having kids because I want to sleep in all the time,'" Dr. Guzzo said. "When fertility rates are down, to me, that's because people don't feel like they have a future that they feel confident in."…

Exposure to widely used insecticides decreases sperm concentration, study finds

"Based on this meta analysis, we believe insecticide exposure … is impacting overall sperm concentration," she told the Guardian. "The message is we need to reduce insecticide exposure in order to ensure men who are planning a family or want to conceive children are able to do that without interference."…

The Sperm-Count ‘Crisis’ Doesn’t Add Up - The New York Times

In a study published in May in the journal Human Fertility, they re-evaluated the 2017 review and found that it relied on flawed assumptions and failed to consider alternate explanations for the apparent decline of sperm.

In an interview, Sarah Richardson, a Harvard scholar on gender and science and the senior author on the new study, called the conclusion of the 2017 review "an astonishing and terrifying claim that, were it to be true, would justify the apocalyptic tenor of some of the writing." Fortunately, she and her co-authors argue, there is little evidence that this is the case...

Tucker Carlson's 'testicle tanning' hits on all the Trump right's obsessions - The Washington Post - Opinion

…No, this is what's crazy. To the extent declining testosterone levels are a problem, the correct solution would be to address a major cause: rising obesity. Instead of shining a red light on your private parts, dear Fox News viewer, turn off Tucker Carlson, get off the couch and go exercise…

EPA Fails to Regulate Chemicals That Disrupt Sexual Development

…Studies of various phthalates have shown them to cause birth defects, fertility problems in people who can become pregnant, miscarriage, testicular cancer, kidney cancer, and liver cancer. Exposure to the chemicals in the womb or early childhood has also been linked to learning, attention, and behavior problems, lower IQ, memory problems, and autism, rates of which have recently reached record highs…

Shanna Swan: 'Most couples may have to use assisted reproduction by 2045' | Fertility problems | The Guardian

...Phthalates, used to make plastic soft and flexible, are of paramount concern. They are in everybody and we are probably primarily exposed through food as we use soft plastic in food manufacture, processing and packaging. They lower testosterone and so have the strongest influences on the male side, for example diminishing sperm count, though they are bad for women, too, shown to decrease libido and increase risk of early puberty, premature ovarian failure, miscarriage and premature birth.

Bisphenol A (BPA), used to harden plastic and found in cash-register receipts and the lining of some canned-food containers, is another. It is oestrogen mimicking and so is a particularly bad actor on the female side, increasing risks of fertility challenges, but likewise it can affect men. Men occupationally exposed to BPA have shown decreased sperm quality, reduced libido and higher rates of erectile dysfunction. Other chemicals of concern include flame retardants and certain pesticides such as atrazine...

Plummeting sperm counts, shrinking penises: toxic chemicals threaten humanity

...And it's killing us, literally, by harming and attacking the very source of life: our reproductive capacities. The rapid death and decline of sperm must be addressed, and it must be addressed now. There simply is no time to lose...
