Rest assured, the new CDC director thinks ‘abortion surveillance’ is essential
“The CDC collects data on abortions that are committed in the United States of America through a system called the Abortion Reporting System,” Hawley said when asking Schwartz whether she would commit to collecting detailed data on abortions. “This system is voluntary, and so a number of states, not coincidentally large blue states, do not turn over any data, so that it’s difficult to get a picture of just how many abortions and under what circumstances are committed in this country. We do know the numbers are going way up.”
“Senator, you have my commitment,” Schwartz replied. “Abortion surveillance is absolutely a critical component of what the CDC is currently doing.”…

Todd Blanche Just Opened the Door to a National Abortion Ban – Mother Jones
The 19th-century law made it a federal crime to mail, possess, give away, or sell “obscene materials”—including items used for abortion. Parts of the law relating to birth control were repealed in 1971, but Comstock was never repealed in its entirety. When abortion providers started prescribing pills to patients in states where abortion was banned thanks to “shield” laws, anti-abortion activists argued that this was a violation of the Comstock Act. Project 2025 also called for criminal prosecutions of abortion pill providers under Comstock, though the document only references the law by statute number, not by name.
In response, a December 2022 opinion from the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel said it was not illegal for the U.S. Postal Service and other carriers like FedEx and UPS to deliver abortion medications to states that ban abortion, and that Comstock did not apply unless the sender intended pills to be used unlawfully. That interpretation has reassured abortion providers that they can prescribe pills across state lines without fear of federal prosecution...

Crisis pregnancy centers questioned about ectopic pregnancy tactic : NPR
This week, Campaign for Accountability, a nonprofit watchdog organization, sent a letter to New York Attorney General Letitia James requesting that her office investigate whether crisis pregnancy centers in New York are fraudulently advertising to women about their ability to diagnose ectopic pregnancies.

She Needed Emergency Care for an Ectopic Pregnancy. The Religious Hospital said “No.”
When Harmonie Perrone arrived at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Illinois with symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy, she knew exactly what treatment she needed. She had been through this before. But because the hospital is religious, it restricted abortion-related care, and Perrone says doctors refused to provide the medication that could have ended the dangerous pregnancy before it became a medical crisis.
Instead, Perrone was repeatedly denied treatment by OB/GYN Dr. Dympna Coll, sent to a Catholic facility that also refused to help her, and forced to seek care elsewhere while the clock was ticking.
By the time she finally received treatment at Northwestern Medicine, the delay had dramatically increased the risks. Ultimately, surgeons had to remove her remaining fallopian tube, leaving her unable to become pregnant without IVF.
Now Perrone is suing Advocate Good Shepherd and Dr. Coll for medical negligence and violations of Illinois law.
But that's not the only lawsuit involved. After Perrone shared her experience on TikTok, Coll sued her for defamation and demanded she take down her videos.

Advocacy group sues Trump administration over access to abortion for veterans | PBS News
The federal lawsuit filed Thursday says the rule finalized by the VA on Dec. 31 takes away limited abortion access that was "crucial for the health, autonomy, and equality of veterans and their family members."
Attorneys for the group Minority Veterans of America want the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to throw out the rule. They say the VA adopted the change without citing medical evidence or other justifications, violating the Administrative Procedures Act that governs federal rulemaking…
