Extended ICE Detention at North Lake: the psychological impact on Michigan detainees

In Michigan, immigrants being held inside detention centers often have no idea of when their cases will be resolved. Dozens have been held for over six months and for some it's been closer to a year. Mental health experts say the uncertainty coupled with the prolonged isolation can take a psychological toll, with the effects often growing more severe the longer a person is detained...

In a statement, Sara Innamorato, the Allegheny county executive, called Michel’s death “a tragedy and appears that with a little humanity, it could have been completely avoidable”.

3-year-old suffered sexual abuse during months in immigration custody, family alleges | PBS News

For five months, the young father waited for his 3-year-old daughter's release from federal custody after she crossed the U.S.-Mexico border with her mother, hoping through delays for their safe reunion.

Only when he turned to the courts as a last resort did he learn that the girl had suffered alleged sexual abuse at the foster home where she'd been placed after immigration officials separated her from her mother.

AG Nessel and Romulus Mayor file lawsuit over planned ICE detention facility

"As the state's attorney general, I have a legal and moral authority to act if and when this administration behaves unlawfully and does so in a way that harms Michigan's residents," Nessel said at a press conference.

The complaint alleges the facility lacks the space, health and sanitation systems and infrastructure to handle as many as 500 detainees at a time. It also said the city, which is also part of the lawsuit, would have to pick up significant costs to manage the additional traffic and security if the project goes forward...

Family of detainee who died under ICE custody says he was denied medical care

"We were a close-knit family. My partner wasn't an animal, so they shouldn't have prevented us from saying goodbye," Martínez Hernandez told the news outlet. "I want answers. Justice for him. I don't want ICE to just say what happened; they need to pay attention to those who are sick. They can't die simply because of negligence," she said…

Children Describe Life Inside Dilley ICE Detention Center — ProPublica

Alexander Perez, a 15-year-old from the Dominican Republic, told me about going to school at Dilley. He said classes included kids from mixed age groups, and each class allowed only 12 students and lasted for just one hour. Slots were assigned on a first-come-first-served basis. Children would line up, hoping to get in. The staff leading the class would distribute handouts and worksheets to those who made it inside.

Alexander Perez complained that the lessons were usually meant for kids who were younger than him, so he found them boring. But because there wasn't much else to do, he used to go whenever he could, until an instructor turned a social studies lesson into what felt like an interrogation about immigration policy…
