Was the United States’ military response to the attacks in Benghazi, Libya, hampered because the State Department couldn't decide what the troops should wear?
That's one of the suggestions that Fox News host Sean Hannity offered in summarizing the Republican-written report on the crisis, released June 28 by the House Select Committee on Benghazi.
"During the attack, a stand-down order was given, and our troops were told to change their clothes four times, and we needed, you know, permission from the Libyans to actually save Americans, and that's what they were discussing" in Washington, Hannity said on his program that evening.
For this fact-check, we'll look at the alleged stand-down order and whether troops were told to change their clothes four times while the attack was under way....

Michael Cohen: Says Hillary Clinton "presided over $6 billion lost at the State Department, sold uranium to the Russians through (her) faux charity, illegally deleted public records, and murdered an ambassador."
Donald Trump’s lawyer accused Hillary Clinton of incompetence, treason, breaking public disclosure law and murder.
A week after his client delivered a major speech knocking Hillary Clinton, Trump Organization executive vice president and special counsel Michael Cohen used his client’s preferred social media platform, Twitter, to paint "Crooked Hillary" as a disaster for national security....

Pope Francis' Sham Apology to LGBTQ Community: Why Being Sorry Doesn't Cut It
Say what you will about Pope Francis, the guy sure does know how to work the media. Take, for instance, his remark on Monday that the church owes gay people an apology. It’s just the kind of vague, feel-good rhetoric at which the pope excels, leading the media to present him as a liberal, and progressives to embrace him as one of their own.
Except he’s not. He can apologize all he wants; it does nothing to to change church teaching on queer folk that describe us as “objectively disordered” and practitioners of a kind of love that is “intrinsically evil.” He’s made it clear he does not accept same-sex marriage as legitimate. He’s yet to censure individual bishops, such as Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus López Rodriguez, who referred to the U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic as a faggot, or others in his charge who wage jihad against gays....

Donald Trump: Says Hillary Clinton’s State Department "approved the transfer of 20 percent of America’s uranium holdings to Russia, while nine investors in the deal funneled $145 million to the Clinton Foundation."
Hillary Clinton’s eponymous nonprofit foundation provided ready-made fodder for a series of attacks from Donald Trump.
In a major speech last week, the presumptive Republican nominee recited a number of claims from Clinton Cash, a 2015 bestselling investigation into donations to the Clinton Foundation.
Among them: "Hillary Clinton’s State Department approved the transfer of 20 percent of America’s uranium holdings to Russia, while nine investors in the deal funneled $145 million to the Clinton Foundation — $145 million dollars."
We wanted to vet this charge of Clinton engaging in pay-to-play politics. Trump’s claim is a reductive version of his source material’s findings and runs into several problems....

'Never Been A Time Like This': Alarmed Muslim Voters Mobilize To Stop Trump
Friday prayer service was winding down at a mosque in northern Virginia when the group's president made his way to the front of the room and made an announcement he typically reserves for the final weeks before Election Day.
“The beauty of this country is that we have a voice,” Ehsan Islam began as he looked out onto a room so crowded for Jummah that some of the men were on a tarp outside. “We live in a state that is a swing state, that is a very important state, and all the candidates are going to be fighting over this.”
“We can decide the outcome,” he told congregants at the Dar Alnoor Islamic Community Center in suburban Washington, D.C.
This cycle – with Republican nominee Donald Trump proposing a ban on Muslims entering the country and threatening to shut down mosques–Muslim Americans have are urgently aware that they need to mobilize against him....

As Adults Legally Smoke Pot In Colorado, More Minority Kids Arrested For It

Fireworks For The Fourth: No, The United States Was Not Founded To Be A ‘Christian Nation’
Today is Independence Day, and many of us will be meeting up with family for cook-outs, picnics, reunions and other events.
While I’m certainly not recommending that you get into an argument with your Uncle Lou who watches too much Fox News, I acknowledge that it might happen. If it does and the topic of America as a “Christian nation” comes up, here is some information you might find useful.
Nowhere in the U.S. Constitution does that document state that America is a Christian nation. This is kind of the slam-dunk argument because it’s fatal to the Christian nation advocates. If our founding document were intended to promote Christianity, it would say that front and center. It doesn’t.
It’s telling that Christian nation proponents rarely talk about the Constitution. Instead, they point to obscure 19th century court opinions, proclamations by politicians or comments by figures who lived years after the Constitution was adopted. Why don’t they talk about the Constitution? Because that document is wholly secular....

Dem Rep. Slams Trump: 'He's Not Even Sincere About The Bigotry He Espouses' (VIDEO)
Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) on Tuesday night railed against Donald Trump, painting the presumptive Republican presidential nominee as insincere and hypocritical.
During an interview on MSNBC's "All In with Chris Hayes," Ellison noted that Trump criticizes trade even though he has outsourced his own products and pointed out that the candidate has changed his position on barring Muslims from the United States throughout the campaign.
"Was he wearing a Trump tie made in China when he made this denouncement of trade? Was he wearing one of those Bangladesh Trump T-shirts that he imports into our country and has made in Bangladesh, where there's been very serious labor policies?" Ellison asked.

Trump botched math, civics, and law all at once
After several days of silence regarding the Supreme Court's ruling against a Texas anti-abortion law, Donald Trump on Thursday finally weighed in on the decision and claimed that such a ruling would not occur if he were to appoint the next Supreme Court justice.
"Now if we had — Scalia was living or if Scalia was replaced by me, you wouldn’t have had that. Okay? It would’ve been the opposite," Trump told conservative radio host Mike Gallagher.
To be clear, the Supreme Court voted 5-3 against the Texas law, and a ninth justice would not have been enough to change the court's opinion.
In the case, the Supreme Court struck down Texas provisions that required abortion clinics to have admitting privileges to nearby hospitals and mandated that the clinics meet the same standards as surgical centers....

Trump says plane might be Mexico attacking
Donald Trump stopped talking about his views on free trade Thursday to surmise that a random plane flying overhead at his campaign rally was Mexico "getting ready to attack."
Trump, speaking at a rally in New Hampshire, pivoted his discussion to talking about Mexico and trading with the country.
"Mexico, and I respect Mexico, I respect their leaders, what they've done to us is incredible. Their leaders are so much smarter, so much sharper. And it's incredible," Trump said.
Then, a plane could be heard flying overhead. "In fact, that could be a Mexican plane up there — they're getting ready to attack," he said....

The NRA Is Spending $2 Million On An Anti-Clinton Ad Pushing Benghazi Conspiracy Theory
The National Rifle Association’s political arm will launch its first ad campaign in support of Donald Trump, featuring a Benghazi survivor attacking Hillary Clinton for allowing his friends to die in the 2012 terrorist attack in Libya.
The NRA’s Political Victory Fund will spend more than $2 million to air the 30-second spot, making it one of the largest independent expenditures on behalf of Trump so far this election. Meet The Colorado Senate Nominee Who Wants Ted Cruz On The Supreme Court
Colorado Republicans nominated El Paso County Commissioner Darryl Glenn, a former Colorado Springs councilman and self-described “unapologetic Christian constitutional conservative pro-life second amendment-loving American,” for U.S. Senate on Tuesday. Despite his paltry campaign fundraising and his vow to oppose keeping Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) as his party leader, Glenn easily beat the establishment favorite. He received endorsements from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who he has said he would like to see appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, and former Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK).
In an April state Republican convention speech, Glenn told the party faithful, “The one thing I’m absolutely tired of hearing is Republicans reaching across the aisle. We need to step up and lead, ladies and gentlemen, I’m tired of reaching across the aisle.” Here are some of the positions he would take with him to Washington if he defeats Sen. Michael Bennet (D) in November....

Conservative Christians Grapple With Whether 'Religious Freedom' Includes Muslims
Religious liberty is a rallying cry for many evangelical voters, and it has been popping up repeatedly throughout this presidential campaign. But in the current political climate, some conservative Christians are struggling with how to apply religious freedom to other faiths — like Islam.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz made religious freedom a hallmark of his failed campaign for the Republican nomination. Now, presumptive nominee Donald Trump is picking up the theme. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump holds up a Bible during a campaign stop in Council Bluffs, Iowa, last year.
"Religious freedom. The right of people of faith to freely practice their faith. So important," Trump said in a June 10 speech in Washington, D.C., to members of the Faith and Freedom Coalition. On June 21, in a room full of evangelical leaders in New York City, Trump again promised to protect religious freedom. The presumptive GOP nominee said if he's elected, "people are going to say 'Merry Christmas' again."
For decades, fights over religious liberty in the U.S. have mostly been about the religious liberties of Christians. Evangelicals have rallied around issues like prayer in public schools, and more recently, whether conservative Christian vendors should be required by law to provide services for same-sex weddings.
But now, as the nation's small but growing Muslim population gains a higher profile, other questions are emerging, including debates in several communities over the right to build mosques....

Texas Supreme Court sides with family that refuses to educate kids while awaiting Rapture
If you thought you were about to be Raptured away into paradise, would you bother teaching your kids about things like math, science and literature?
One Christian family in Texas has been accused of refusing to educate their nine children because they believe the Rapture is imminent — and they’ve just won a big case in front of the Texas Supreme Court.
Local news station KFOR reports that the Texas Supreme Court has ruled on technical grounds that parents Laura and Michael McIntyre do not have to provide proof to the El Paso school district that they’re teaching their children anything.
Home school families are not required by law in Texas to teach state-approved curriculum or to issue standardized tests, which means the state seemingly has very little ground to stop parents who think the Rapture means their children don’t need to learn how to read.
Regardless, the family had better hope that the Rapture really is coming soon — because if it doesn’t, they will have produced nine extremely unemployable people....

Supreme Court blockade could be another blow to vulnerable Republican senators
Swing state voters don’t want Donald Trump determining the future of the Supreme Court, a new set of PPP polls finds. According to the polls of Arizona, Iowa, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin:
Voters in all six states, by margins ranging from 5 to 23 points, say they don’t trust Donald Trump to nominate a Supreme Court justice. Voters in WI (34% trust Trump, 57% don’t) and in the home of Judiciary Committee Chair Charles Grassley of IA (35% trust Trump, 52% don’t) are particularly skeptical of Trump’s ability to name a Justice. Poverty, Religion And American Frustration (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)
In his new memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” J.D. Vance writes about a culture in crisis: Poor, white Americans. It’s about his childhood spent in the coal-country of Appalachia, and his years spent in the Marines and Yale Law School. But it’s also an anguished look at working-class dysfunction. Poverty, joblessness, poor education, opioid addiction, erosion of family ties, erosion of church ties, that have led to what he describes as “hillbilly culture” to abandon, he says, the American Dream...

Jonathan Rauch On How American Politics Went Insane (Diane Rehm Show )
As the pundits tell us, this election year is all about “anti-establishment” voters. People don’t trust the system and the party leaders. They want big money out of politics, more transparency and less pork. But according to journalist and Brookings Institution fellow Jonathan Rauch, the loss of the old way of doing politics has ushered in an era in which chaos rules, trust is eroded, and nothing can get done. His story, “How American Politics Went Insane,” is on the cover of the latest issue of The Atlantic. He joins Diane to talk about how we got to this point, why he’d like to see some political reforms dialed back and what it would take to get our political system functioning again.

The hypocrisy at the heart of Trump’s campaign
Paul Manafort, Donald Trump’s campaign manager, had a message to deliver.
“Hillary Clinton is the epitome of the establishment; she’s been in power for 25 years,” he informed Chuck Todd on NBC’s “Meet the Press” last Sunday.
When Trump, Manafort added, “says he’s going to bring real change to the country, voters believe him — unlike Mrs. Clinton, who has been saying that for 25 years and in those 25 years, the only changes that have happened have made people’s lives worse.”
But then, at the tail end of the interview, Manafort slipped when discussing evangelical Christians’ support for Trump. “In my 40 years in politics, I have never seen such a broad-based base of support within that community for one candidate.”
Forty years in politics? But it’s Clinton’s 25 years that make her the “establishment”?

God? Meaning of life? Many Americans don’t seek them in church
The “seekers” have left the church — if they ever came.
LifeWay Research has taken a close look at what might draw them in, zeroing in on people who say they have not attended a religious service in the past six months except for special events or holidays.
Worship? Not particularly interested, 2 in 3 people told the evangelical research firm in a survey released Tuesday (June 28).
Talk about God? Not so much, said 3 in 4 of the 2,000 “unchurched” people in the survey –including 57 percent who identified as Christians.

Gloria in expansion
CATHOLIC hospitals have been a force in American medicine since the Industrial Revolution, when nuns arrived from Europe to tend to immigrant communities. They are still flourishing. The total number of Catholic acute-care hospitals, where patients receive short-term treatment for urgent health conditions, increased by 8% from 2001 to 2016. In the same period, the number of beds in such hospitals grew by 18%. One in six acute-care beds lies within a Catholic hospital.
Over the past two decades, economic pressures have driven health-care providers to consolidate. To achieve scale and increase their bargaining power with insurance companies, independent hospitals have merged to form larger systems. Catholic hospitals look to each other for potential partnerships first, says Lois Uttley, the director of MergerWatch, an advocacy group. Senator seeks to stop DOJ from investigating private schools for violations of Americans with Disabilities Act
A Republican senator has inserted language into an appropriations bill that would prohibit the Justice Department from enforcing key provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act at private schools that receive public funds, a measure he said was necessary to protect voucher programs from politically motivated attacks.
The bill — the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations Act — has not yet passed. But disability-rights advocates are concerned that the amendment submitted last week by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) could make it far more difficult for Justice Department officials to ensure that voucher programs give students with disabilities fair access to private schools....

Game Changer: The Best Analysis of the Supreme Court’s Abortion Decision
Yesterday’s Supreme Court decision in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt was an unexpectedly sweeping victory for reproductive rights advocates — a “game changer,” said Nancy Northrop of the Center for Reproductive Rights that “leaves the right to an abortion on much stronger footing than it stood on before this decision was handed down,” long-time court-watcher Ian Millhiser wrote.
Abortion foes had hoped the court would use the Texas abortion case as an opportunity to gut not just Roe v. Wade, but also 1992’s seminal Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which held that abortion laws creating an “undue burden” on women were unconstitutional. Instead, the court clarified and strengthened Casey while striking down two of Texas law H.B. 2’s key provisions — strict building rules for abortion clinics and a requirement that abortion doctors have admitting privileges at local hospitals. This could invalidate anti-abortion laws in another 25 states....

House Republicans Release a Benghazi Report With "New" Facts That Don't Change the Story
A day after Democrats on the House Select Committee on Benghazi released a 339-page report slamming their GOP colleagues for engaging in a partisan witch hunt instead of a serious inquiry into the 2012 attack on a US facility in that Libyan city, the Republican committee members released their final report.
Clocking in at more than 800 pages—and completed after one of the costliest and longest congressional investigations—it alleges that the Obama administration was more concerned with the political fallout of the attack than with immediately aiding Americans under assault, that it failed to deploy military assets to protect US personnel in Benghazi (a point examined by several previous investigations that essentially concluded that there had been no wrongdoing), and that it hindered the committee's investigation by withholding evidence and blocking interviews with key officials. The committee claimed it had uncovered loads of new facts, but few, if any, bolstered the various charges and conspiracy theories Republicans and conservatives have hurled at the Obama administration and Hillary Clinton, who was secretary of state at the time of the attack....

Standing in Front of Garbage, Trump Recycles Terrible Ideas About Free Trade
Donald Trump launched extensive attacks on free trade, China, and Hillary Clinton during a speech on Tuesday in Pennsylvania, pledging to renegotiate trade deals and repeatedly promising American workers better jobs and more tariff protections.
"Globalization has made the financial elite who donate to politicians very wealthy, but it has left millions of our workers with nothing but poverty and heartache," Trump said. "I want you to imagine how much better our future can be if we declare independence from the elites who've led us to one financial and foreign policy disaster after another."...

Hillary Clinton: After Britain’s vote to leave the European Union, "within 24 hours, Americans lost $100 billion from our 401(k)s."
In a speech attacking her opponent, Hillary Clinton said Donald Trump cheered while the economy reeled in the aftermath of Britain’s shocking vote to leave the European Union.
"On Friday, when Britain voted to leave the European Union, he crowed from his golf course about how the disruption could end up creating higher profits for that golf course, even though, within 24 hours, Americans lost $100 billion from our 401(k)s," Clinton said in Ohio June 27. "He tried to turn a global economics challenge into an infomercial."
Trump did say last week that Brexit would benefit Turnberry, his golf course in Scotland, because a weaker pound would bring more tourists.
We wondered, though, about the other part of Clinton’s claim: that Brexit caused 50 million Americans with 401(k) retirement savings accounts to lose $100 billion in just 24 hours....

Donald Trump: Says Hillary Clinton "filibustered legislation to reform" Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Responsibility for the 2008 housing crisis is at stake in a new attack launched by Donald Trump against Hillary Clinton.
"Hillary Clinton filibustered legislation to reform Fannie and Freddie Mae – institutions at the center of the Great Recession – which have been funneling hundreds of thousands to Hillary Clinton's campaign and Foundation," a statement from the Trump campaign said on June 21.

How to hand off your Mac for repair without worrying about insecure data on an SSD | Macworld
Don Kerns asks, in light of the removal of Secure Empty Trash for SSDs in El Capitan, about a repair operation he needs for his brand spanking new Mac:
My concern is providing the laptop to the service center with admin password or temp admin privileges as this appears to give them full access to my FileVault encrypted drive. It appears the only feasible way (other than securely wiping entire drive) to prevent admin access/copying my data is to delete certain software (Dropbox, LastPass, etc) and then secure erase the associated data folders. Is there a way to provide the service center with access to the MacBook Pro but not my confidential data stored on the laptop?
Unfortunately, there’s not....

Farewell to the Benghazi Farce: Trey Gowdy's Investigation Concludes Not With a Bang but a Whimper
To the surprise of no one, the Republicans’ four-year partisan inquisition surrounding the terrorist attack on the American compound in Benghazi, Libya, is likely ending with a whimper. With the House Select Committee on Benghazi finally releasing its findings, and the report representing the eighth and (likely) final government investigation into the deadly event, the Benghazi hoax, as sponsored by Fox News for four years, finally comes to an impotent and ignominious end.
Early indications are that the report, as expected, provides no major revelations. Already undercut by a report from Democratic members of the Benghazi committee that further debunked right-wing myths about the attack, the GOP’s long-awaited Benghazi report is in danger of being met with collective shoulder shrugs....

Muslim Woman Tackled By Cops, Publicly Strip Searched On Independence Day
This time last year, as the holy month of Ramadan was coming to an end, a fasting Muslim woman carrying a backpack full of food was tackled by Chicago police during her commute home. Then the police kicked her and strip searched her in public.
According to the victim, Itemad “Angel” Almatar, she was running to catch a train on July 4, when five officers profiled and apprehended her on a flight of steps.
“They threw me to the stairs, and grabbed my bags. They kicked me, hit me, took off my hijab,” she told CBS Chicago. They also asked her humiliating questions about why she is Muslim and why she was covering her body, before conducting an invasive strip search in front of bystanders....

Breaking: North Carolina GOP Lawmakers Drafting New HB2 'Fix' After Pressure From NBA
House Republicans are reportedly drafting new legislation to amend HB2, amid pressure from the NBA which could move the 2017 All-Star Game out of state. HB2 is a virulently anti-LGBT bill that experts have deemed unconstitutional, which in addition to banning transgender people from using public restrooms that correspond with their gender identity, remove local control over minimum wage and employment discrimination ordinances.
The possible new bill would, as WBTV first reported, create "an official document that would recognize a person’s gender reassignment. The new document, which is treated as the equivalent as a birth certificate in the draft legislation, is referred to as a certificate of sex reassignment."...

Donald Trump blames Hillary Clinton for the United States getting beaten by China on trade.
"Hillary Clinton surged the trade deficit with China 40% as Secretary of State, costing Americans millions of jobs," he tweeted on June 21, 2016.
He said something similar during a speech the following day -- that "our trade deficit with China soared 40 percent during Hillary Clinton’s time as Secretary of State -- a disgraceful performance for which she should not be congratulated, but rather scorned."

Supreme Court rejects religious objections to sale of contraceptives (+video)
Conservatives were disappointed and liberals were encouraged by the Supreme Court decision Tuesday to reject an appeal in a case involving the sale of emergency contraceptives and religious liberty.
In effect, the high court let stand a July 2015 lower court ruling that a Washington State statute was OK to protect women's access to contraceptives.
The Washington regulations were established in 2007 after some women claimed they had been denied time-sensitive emergency contraceptives (known as "Plan B"). The regulations require pharmacists to provide all prescriptions in a timely manner, and was put in place by the state's Board of Pharmacy after some women claimed they had been denied Plan B by pharmacists....

Dobson: Trump Recently Accepted Christ
Perhaps I'm late to this story, what with so much else going on. But apparently just recently Donald Trump accept Jesus as his savior and is now a born-again Christian.
This is what Dr. James Dobson is telling fellow evangelicals. And it is apparently what Trump told him. Dobson even knows the businessman who recently led Trump to Christ. And it all came out at that big evangelical shindig Trump held a week ago in New York City.
Said Dobson: "He did accept a relationship with Christ. I know the person who led him to Christ. That's fairly recent. I don't know when it was, but it has not been long. I believe he really made a commitment, but he's a baby Christian. We all need to be praying for him, especially if there's a possibility of him being our next chief executive officer."...

WaPo: Trump Promised Millions In Private Donations, Gave Less Than $10K
While Donald Trump’s campaign claimed that the candidate personally donated millions to charity between 2008-2015, Washington Post investigation out Tuesday only managed to find one donation amounting to less than $10,000.
Only 11 out of 167 charities to which Trump had some link told the Post that they had received a personal donation from the real estate mogul. Another 77 said they never received such a gift, 39 declined to comment and 40 didn’t respond to the newspaper’s inquiries.
The most recent personal gift discovered by the Post was submitted to the Police Athletic League in 2009 and amounted to under $10,000. The donations to the league were counted in $5,000 blocks, making it impossible to determine the precise amount, but Trump’s contribution was between $5,000-$9,999....

Catholic League Chief Loses It Over Pope's Call To Apologize To Gays (VIDEO)
Bill Donohue, the president of the Catholic League, is refusing to heed Pope Francis' call for Christians to apologize to members of the LGBT community whom they have offended.
"No,” Donohue said on CNN's "New Day" Tuesday when asked if he would apologize. "As a matter of fact, I want an apology from gays. I’ve been assaulted by gays. I’ve never assaulted a gay person in my entire life."
Donohue then insisted that the media twisted Pope Francis' words.
The pope over the weekend was asked if he feels the Catholic church owes an apology to gay people. Pope Francis said that gay people can be denounced for behaviors that are "a bit offensive for others."
But he added, "I think the church must not only apologize ... to a gay person it offended, but we must apologize to the poor, to women who have been exploited, to children forced into labor, apologize for having blessed so many weapons."...

GOP Tries To Use Zika Bill To Undo Cemetery Confederate Flag Ban
House Republican lawmakers sought to reverse previously passed legislation restricting the display of the Confederate flag in federal cemeteries by slipping a provision stripping the legislation into a larger appropriations bill that included Zika funding. The House bill passed last week on largely partisan lines, but was blocked in the Senate Tuesday by a Democratic filibuster.
The Confederate flag language was just one of a number controversial provisions included in the bill, which also included an amendment cutting Planned Parenthood funding and other swipes at the Obama administration's public health initiatives....

Dangerous Levels Of Lead Have Been Found In Water Systems Nationwide
The recent water crisis in Flint, Michigan, in which elevated lead levels poisoned an entire city and took years to spark action, served as a wake up call to many Americans about the danger of lead in drinking water. But a new report from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) finds that Flint is just one of many places where lead levels have reached dangerous levels.
“Americans take it for granted that the water flowing from their drinking water taps…is clean and safe,” Erik Olson, director of the NRDC’s health program said on a call with the media. “But what we found is that all too often that assumption is wrong.”

“This case is an ominous sign,” Justice Samuel Alito begins one of the final opinions released on this last day of the Supreme Court term. He then proceeds to complain for 15 pages that pharmacy owners do not have enough control over whether women can fill their birth control prescriptions. Along the way, he manages to imply that anyone who does not believe in a god or gods is inherently immoral.
The political issue underlying Stormans v. Wiesman is familiar to anyone who has paid attention to the Supreme Court’s involvement in the birth control wars. The owners of a pharmacy in Olympia, Washington object to certain forms of contraception on religious grounds, but a state regulation requires pharmacies to “deliver lawfully prescribed drugs or devices to patients.”
So people with religious objections to birth control want an exemption from the law. We’ve heard this story before....

Billboard Outside GOP Convention Will Quote Ronald Reagan Advocating for Church/State Separation
Given that the Republican National Convention will take place in Cleveland, Ohio in a few weeks, it’s only fair that a group would put up a billboard in the area featuring Lord and Savior Ronald Reagan.
Oh, to see the looks on attendees’ faces when they actually read the sign…

This 21-Year-Old May Have Found The Way To Clean Up The Plastic In Our Oceans
Boyan Slat was just 16 when he realized he wanted to rid the oceans of plastic. It all happened after he dove into the problem in the most literal way while snorkeling in Greece and finding more drifting plastic than fish swimming.
“I thought, that’s a real problem. How can we come up with a solution for that?” Slat recalled during an interview with ThinkProgress.
Indeed, the problem is real and large. Around eight million metric tons of plastic waste enter the oceans every year, according to a 2015 study. In addition, recent research found so-called garbage patches in every major ocean. Plastic is so pervasive that it’s been found in sea ice, and also inside 50 percent of all species of seabirds, 66 percent of all species of marine mammals, and all species of sea turtles....

Trump's ban isn't just for Muslims anymore—it now includes an indiscriminate number of people
In the bizarro world of Donald Trump, we’re continually reminded that every policy pronouncement is really just a whimsical moving target—including that whole Muslim ban, which initially seemed so simple. Not so, says Trump campaign spokesperson Katrina Pierson. It's actually much more complicated, since Trump really meant to include ANYONE traveling from "terrorist nations." Caitlin MacNeal reports on Pierson's latest CNN utterances:
"Mr. Trump is going to be refining his policy — putting out more specific details, which everyone’s been asking for, but there has been no change. He still does not want to allow individuals to come into this country who cannot be vetted."
"Individuals or Muslims?" [CNN's Brianna] Keilar then asked.
Pierson then focused on Trump barring immigrants who "cannot be vetted." "Well, it doesn’t matter really where you’re coming from, except for the fact of the terrorist nations, which he is adding to this policy to make it more clear that if you are coming from a hostile nation, and you cannot be vetted, absolutely you should not come unto this country," she said. "But individuals are the same. We cannot allow individuals to come into this country that cannot be vetted."...

The Rise In Hate Crimes In The U.K. After Brexit Should Scare You
There has been a significant rise in hate crimes since the U.K. voted to leave the European Union last week, according to local media — which is probably not a surprise given the blatantly xenophobic campaigning of Leave supporters.
The Independent reported Tuesday that there have already been over 100 incidents of racial abuse and hate crimes since the U.K. voted to leave the union last Thursday. A Facebook album called “Worrying Signs” has compiled reports of the incidents throughout the country — from personal threats and attacks to vandalization of cultural centers. Polish and Muslim communities in particular have faced the brunt of many of these attacks, but it’s certainly spread beyond that as well....

Why LGBT Catholics Are Skeptical Of Pope Francis' Apology To Gays
Pope Francis issued a sweeping apology to LGBT people on Sunday, calling for the Catholic Church to take ownership of the wrongs it has perpetrated against the bisexual, transgender, lesbian, and gay community. But many LGBT advocates say the pontiff’s words ring hollow, noting the Church has yet to change its official opposition to homosexuality and continues to fire people for being openly gay.
While speaking to reporters this weekend on a flight back to Rome from Armenia, Francis was asked to respond to comments made by a Catholic Cardinal in Germany who said the Church should apologize to LGBT people — especially in the wake of the horrific shooting earlier this month that left 49 people dead at a gay night club in Orlando, Florida.
“I will repeat what the Catechism of the Catholic Church says: that [gay people] should not be discriminated against, that they have to be respected, accompanied pastorally,” Francis said. “The matter is a person that has that condition [and] that has good will because they search for God.”
Francis also voiced a tweaked version of his 2013 comments on gay priests, in which he asked, “Who am I to judge.”
“The questions is: If a person who has that condition, who has good will, and who looks for God, who are we to judge?” Francis said this week....

Muslim Group Invites Islamophobic Congressman To Dinner, And He's A Total Jerk About It
The Alabama Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations on Monday asked Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) to apologize for previously claiming that Muslims want to kill every gay person in the nation. The group also invited the congressman to attend a Ramadan interfaith dinner at a local mosque so he could actually meet some of the constituents he had offended.
In an appearance on Alabama talk radio June 16, Brooks claimed it was “mainstream Muslim thought” to seek the eradication of the LGBT community.
“Democrats are in a perplexing position,” said the congressman, because “on the one hand, they’re trying to appeal to the gay community, but, on the other hand, they’re trying to also appeal to the Muslim community, which, if it had its way, would kill every homosexual in the United States of America.”
CAIR, the nation’s largest Muslim advocacy group, says that’s simply not true....

Pastors Praise Anti-Gay Massacre in Orlando, Prompting Outrage
After the massacre in Orlando, Fla., American religious leaders spoke in a largely unified voice, condemning the killer and mourning the dead. But at some extreme conservative Christian churches, there was another message: good riddance.
In the weeks since 49 people were slaughtered at a gay nightclub, remarks by pastors celebrating the deaths have brought attention to several outposts of anti-gay hostility across the country that until now had been operating mostly under the radar.
“The tragedy is that more of them didn’t die,” Roger Jimenez, a Sacramento preacher, exhorted his congregants on June 12, the day of the assault. “The tragedy is — I’m kind of upset that he didn’t finish the job! Because these people are predators! They are abusers!”...

Why Can’t Police Stop Killing Innocent People?
The death of Freddie Gray in the back of a police van was no accident, and even worse, it wasn’t unique. All too often, suspects needlessly die while in police custody, and often times these deaths are simply written off with no real investigation and no consequences for the officers involved. This has become an epidemic in America. Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins and attorney David Haynes explain how bad the problem really is…

The Republican Healthcare Plan: Get a Job and Buy Medicine?
Just when you thought Republicans couldn’t get any more heartless, a Mississippi state representative stepped in to prove just how out of touch with reality the Republican Party has really become. Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins discusses this.

President of the Catholic League Compares LGBT Community to Terrorists & Mobsters

It Turns Out That Pre-Written Speeches Actually DO NOT Help Trump
In this Majority Report clip, Donald Trump gives a speech in front of a wall of garbage, something that obviously made the internet foam at the mouth. Anyway, he was telling some lies again, only this time the lies were written out for him ahead of time and he read them from an evil teleprompter. He threatens Mexico, Canada, and China, and lists specific NAFTA articles and sections of trade acts that he most certainly has NO IDEA about.
