Bills advance in state House to increase protections from lead exposure for children

There is no "safe" level of lead in the blood, but one bill would would lower the threshold for "elevated blood lead level" by two thirds, to reflect the national standard. 

Another bill would automatically refer children with elevated blood lead levels to the state's Early On intervention program. And a third bill would require baby food sold in Michigan to be tested for lead and other toxic metals...

Trump Administration Shifts Guidance for Superfund Lead Cleanup — ProPublica

The Biden administration lowered the guidance for so-called removal management levels to 200 parts per million. 

The Trump administration has said its new guidance, which raised them to 600 parts per million, would speed cleanups by providing clearer direction and streamlining investigations of contaminated sites. But environmental advocates said it only accelerates project completion by cleaning up fewer properties…

Revealed: the ‘shocking’ levels of toxic lead in Chicago tap water

Numerous studies have shown that, even at low levels, lead can leave an indelible impact on young children and adults. Once in the blood, lead can cross the blood-brain barrier and affect the nervous system. It has been linked to lower IQ levels, behavioral disorders and worsening performance in reading and math. 
In adults, low levels of lead are associated with kidney problems and increasing blood pressure, which can lead to a host of cardiac effects.
