Some disabled people want to advance their careers. They say Medicaid rules stop them : NPR

For years, disability rights advocates have pushed state legislatures to change the limits, arguing that they prevent people like Carter from accepting raises or building savings, for fear of losing crucial medical benefits. Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey and Rhode Island have eliminated such limits over the past five years…

To keep her Medicaid coverage, Carter would've had to find a job paying her far less than she was making. Or she could drop her Medicaid coverage and enroll in the school district's health plan. But that plan didn't cover many of the disability-related expenses that Medicaid did…

The Only Research Center For Disabled Parents Is Losing Federal Funding – Mother Jones

In May, the White House Office of Management and Budget, led by Project 2025 architect Russell Vought, released a proposal that, if finalized, would have the federal government arbitrarily terminate grants and involve political appointees more deeply in the grantmaking process…

Font of ‘wasteful’ diversity: Trump’s state department orders return to Times New Roman

The change to Calibri in 2023 was recommended by diversity and disability groups in the US government, according to US media reports. Some studies have suggested that sans-serif fonts, such as Calibri, are easier to read for those with certain visual disabilities...

Donald Trump’s Decades-Long Obsession With Eugenics – Mother Jones

Many people were shocked to read allegations last year by Donald Trump's nephew, Fred Trump III, about his uncle: Fred, whose son William has intellectual and developmental disabilities, reported that the elder Trump said during his first presidential term that people like William should "just die."

That is shocking—but it's not surprising. The comment falls into a pattern of eugenicist and ableist views that Trump has espoused all the way back to the 1980s, when he spoke openly about the importance of having "the right genes" in an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show...

Donald Trump Jr. and Fox News' FAA and Boeing attack is ableist

While conservatives feel compelled to wink-and-nod and avoid explicitly racist language when attacking racial diversity issues, they are more explicit in their arguments against hiring people with disabilities. They recycle the trope that has justified either not hiring people with disabilities or even paying them below the minimum wage: that disabled labor is somehow less or that they are not capable of doing their jobs. In attacking the FAA initiative, they're calling out DEI in an industry that's unspeakably miserable for people with disabilities...

What’s the effect of school voucher programs on students with disabilities?

"Families who kept their kids in public schools will have to pay more to keep receiving the same services that they received before because of the drain on public resources from the Hope scholarship," said Kelly Allen, the executive director of the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy, a nonpartisan policy research organization that advocates for living wages and affordable health care.

The loss of money to public schools may have a disproportionate impact on students with disabilities, said Joe White, executive director of the West Virginia School Service Personnel Association. He described a recent scenario in a classroom with two aides for 12 students with disabilities, each of whom needed individual attention. In his eyes, the classroom was understaffed. It will only get worse if aide positions are cut, he said. The special education population accounted for 20% of all students in the 2021-22 school year, up from 16% in 2014-15, according to West Virginia Department of Education data…

Lawsuit accuses Catholic schools in New Orleans of discriminating against students with disabilities | PBS NewsHour

The teen's family has sued two local Catholic schools over what it describes as discriminatory admissions practices against students with physical, emotional, or learning disabilities. Now, it has joined a class-action lawsuit that claims that the Archdiocese of New Orleans asks illegal questions about students' disabilities on its schools' application forms...

A New Government Report Shows Private School Voucher Programs Fail To Provide Information, Especially To Families Of Students With Disabilities | Americans United

Yesterday, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released yet another report detailing the failures of private school voucher programs across the country. Like its previous reports, which have focused on the lack of oversight and quality controls in the Washington, D.C., voucher program as well as the lack of services provided to students with disabilities and low-income students, this report finds that voucher programs frequently fail to provide parents with sufficient information about students’ rights and services...

The Five Most Outrageous Things Buried in the GOP’s Tax Bill -- The Daily Beast

The unveiling of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act—nĂ©e the "Cut Cut Cut Cut Act"—was pitched by Republican lawmakers on Thursday as a final step in their lengthy journey to deliver long-promised relief to American taxpayers. The legislation, which would slash taxes for corporations by $1 trillion in its first 10 years and radically cut taxes for heirs to large family fortunes, was framed by House Speaker Paul Ryan as "real relief for people in the middle—and people who are also striving to get there."

DeVos scraps 72 documents laying out disabled students' rights

Donald Trump: Let’s get rid of regulations. Betsy DeVos: Okay, how about these 72 documents giving guidance on the rights of students with disabilities? Predictably, the DeVos-led Education Department insisted that the 72 were rescinded because they were “outdated, unnecessary, or ineffective.” Things like this:....
