Will Gov. Snyder Be Next to Be Charged Over Poisoning of Flint's Water Supply?

http://democracynow.org - Michigan’s attorney general has filed criminal charges against four officials over the Flint water contamination crisis. Among those charged Tuesday are two of the city’s former unelected emergency managers, Darnell Earley and Gerald Ambrose. They were charged with criminal conspiracy to violate safety rules. The Flint water crisis began when unelected emergency manager Darnell Earley, appointed by Governor Rick Snyder, switched the source of the city’s drinking water from the Detroit system to the corrosive Flint River. The water corroded Flint’s aging pipes, causing poisonous levels of lead to leach into the drinking water. We speak to Curt Guyette of the ACLU of Michigan and Nayyirah Shariff, director of Flint Rising.

Dangerous Levels Of Lead Have Been Found In Water Systems Nationwide

The recent water crisis in Flint, Michigan, in which elevated lead levels poisoned an entire city and took years to spark action, served as a wake up call to many Americans about the danger of lead in drinking water. But a new report from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) finds that Flint is just one of many places where lead levels have reached dangerous levels.

“Americans take it for granted that the water flowing from their drinking water taps…is clean and safe,” Erik Olson, director of the NRDC’s health program said on a call with the media. “But what we found is that all too often that assumption is wrong.”
