‘Mother of all deals’: EU and India sign free trade agreement

The trade deal is part of a flurry of agreements announced at a summit on Tuesday, as the EU and India grapple with Donald Trump's tariffs, China's economic heft and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The two sides are due to sign a security pact to deepen joint work on maritime security, hybrid threats and counter-terrorism...

Free Speech, NAFTA & Trump’s Trans Ban (Opening Arguments podcast OA214)

Today’s Kavanaugh-free episode is a classic, three-story, Deep Dive Tuesday into (1) a recent free speech case involving protesters at a Trump rally; (2) the status of Trump’s efforts to ban trans service personnel from the military; and (3) whether Trump can unilaterally abrogate NAFTA. Strap in — it’s going to be a long ride!

We begin with an examination of Nwanguma v. Trump at both the district court level and the recent decision from the 6th Circuit. Should protesters be allowed to sue Trump and his campaign staff for incitement to riot? Listen and find out!

After that, we examine the status of Trump’s latest (Mar. 23, 2018) order on trans personnel in the military. Is there… good news out of the Ninth Circuit??!?

Then, we check out the history of presidential withdrawals from treaty obligations, a case involving a former Presidential candidate (Barry Goldwater) versus a sitting President (Jimmy Carter), and Donald Trump’s constant claims that he can abrogate the North American Free Trade Agreement. Is any of this true? The answer almost certainly will surprise you!

Economist Jeffrey Sachs On Globalization’s Risks (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)

We see a whole lot of problems falling out of the Brexit vote. A lot of people roll their eyes at the language of a Trump rally. But my guest today, global development veteran Jeffrey Sachs says pay attention. He’s not against globalization, he says. But the way we’ve done it is not working, he says. Too much border chaos. Too much profit to the top. Too little elite attention to very real problems. This hour On Point, Jeffrey Sachs on owning up to the problems of globalization as we’ve done it. — Tom Ashbrook

I'm a Canadian foreign policy expert. Donald Trump is a threat to my country's national security

It is sobering to think that, in less than a week, the United States may begin an ominous shift from Canada's closest and most important ally to one of our most serious national security challenges. For the first time in more than a century, when Canadians think of the country most likely to adversely affect their safety and well-being, their eyes may turn south.

This is not exaggerated partisan rhetoric. Donald Trump is hostile to NAFTA — the foundation of our current bilateral trading relationship — and equally critical of the broader international trade regime. Canada-US trade employs millions of people and is equal to almost 40% of Canadian GDP. A erratic, protectionist Trump Administration would put that economic relationship at risk....

Global Trade: Fact And Fiction (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)

Something new is happening in global trade. It’s declining. After decades where Chinese factories boomed and the trend line was always up, it’s flat and down. Empty, idled container ships. US trade, too - down during a period of economic growth for the first time since World War II. On the campaign trail, trade-bashing is hot. That may be fighting the last war. Some say the great age of globalization is over. This hour On Point, what it means when trade goes flat. — Tom Ashbrook

Bringing Back Manufacturing Jobs Would Be Harder Than It Sounds

Presidents simply don't have the power to tell companies whom to hire or where to manufacture, says Jeffrey Bergstrand, professor of finance at the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. "Firms are going to make the decisions for their shareholders. If he wants to do this, he is going to have to use government institutions and laws to restrict the decisions of firms," Bergstrand says...

Standing in Front of Garbage, Trump Recycles Terrible Ideas About Free Trade

Donald Trump launched extensive attacks on free trade, China, and Hillary Clinton during a speech on Tuesday in Pennsylvania, pledging to renegotiate trade deals and repeatedly promising American workers better jobs and more tariff protections.

"Globalization has made the financial elite who donate to politicians very wealthy, but it has left millions of our workers with nothing but poverty and heartache," Trump said. "I want you to imagine how much better our future can be if we declare independence from the elites who've led us to one financial and foreign policy disaster after another."...

It Turns Out That Pre-Written Speeches Actually DO NOT Help Trump

In this Majority Report clip, Donald Trump gives a speech in front of a wall of garbage, something that obviously made the internet foam at the mouth. Anyway, he was telling some lies again, only this time the lies were written out for him ahead of time and he read them from an evil teleprompter. He threatens Mexico, Canada, and China, and lists specific NAFTA articles and sections of trade acts that he most certainly has NO IDEA about.

Paging Trump! Convention Host Committee Chairs Tied To Offshore-Happy Corp

Donald Trump has built his presidential campaign on a promise to “Make America Great Again” by stopping corporate offshoring and reinvigorating the U.S. manufacturing industry.

But three of the four co-chairs of the host committee for the Republican National Convention, where Trump is expected to be named the party’s nominee in July, have ties to a corporation that has offshored hundreds of jobs in the past few years.

Their links to Eaton Corp., a global power management giant, highlight the ripe tension between the GOP establishment's free trade orthodoxy and the sweeping America-first rhetoric of the party's nominee—who, ironically, has been criticized for offshoring himself....
