Planned Parenthood to target GOP with $47 million midterm blitz - POLITICO

“For millions of Americans, abortion is not a hypothetical election issue, it is part of their everyday lives,” Standiford said. “Abortion and defunding Planned Parenthood are not just highly mobilizing, they are in fact dealbreakers for voters across the political spectrum, and that’s how we’re going to be talking to voters about this issue.”…

‘Anorexic’ reconciliation bill could mean Planned Parenthood gets re-funded - POLITICO

“Congressional Republicans are spending their time making political calculations about their wildly unpopular agenda all while over a million people’s access to care hangs in the balance,” Sarah Guggenheimer, a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood Action Fund, said in a statement to POLITICO. “Until the moment that Planned Parenthood health center patients are no longer at risk of having their health care taken from them and their lives upended, Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s fight will continue.”…

Lawsuit dismissed after Trump admin quietly restored tens of millions to Planned Parenthood - POLITICO

The clinics and the groups representing them argue, however, that the restored funds will not undo all of the harm done over the many months the money was withheld. Though many clinics had been saving their receipts from low-income patients who came in for birth control, testing for sexually transmitted infections and other Title X services and can submit them now for federal reimbursement, dozens of clinics have since shut down and are unlikely to reopen.

"More than 800 service sites were unable to provide Title X services. Hundreds of thousands of patients were unable to get Title X services. So the impact was tremendous," said Brigitte Amiri, the deputy director at the ACLU's Reproductive Freedom Project who represented the clinics in the case. "So damage certainly was done as a result of their unlawful withholding of the funds."…

Trump’s efforts to defund Planned Parenthood threatens US healthcare system, study suggests

"They haven't been able to ban abortion outright, so they're trying to take away the money for services like cancer screening, STI testing, birth control, and essentially trying to shut us down that way so that we can't provide abortion," said Nichole Ramirez, senior vice-president of communication and donor relations at Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties.

"They're taking away this vital care from mostly underserved communities. They're willing to have an increase in STIs, have a potential increase in cancer rates so that they can try to get rid of abortion."…

Massachusetts court orders continued Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood

Talwani wrote that she wasn't preventing the federal government from regulating abortion, or directing it to fund elective abortions or other services not eligible for Medicaid coverage.

But she said the freeze prevents the Trump administration from "targeting a specific group of entities—Planned Parenthood Federation Members—for exclusion from reimbursements under the Medicaid program" when they showed "substantial likelihood" that such a targeted exclusion is unconstitutional...

Debating Religion (Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor, Freethought Radio podcast)

We discuss the Supreme Court decision allowing states to defund Planned Parenthood and we decry many attempts by Christian nationalists to force religious conformity on a diverse nation.

After celebrating the life of the irreverent comedian, actor, filmmaker, songwriter and playwright Mel Brooks (who turns 99 this month), we hear opening statements in two debates in the United Kingdom that FFRF co-presidents participated in.

We hear the Opening Statement by Dan Barker in a debate at Oxford University on the topic: “This House Believes God Is a Delusion.” Then we hear the Opening Statement by Annie Laurie Gaylor at Cambridge University on the topic: “This House Believes Religion and Feminism Are Incompatible.”

Trump admin cuts tens of millions from Planned Parenthood - POLITICO

The Trump administration is withholding tens of millions of dollars from Planned Parenthood clinics that provide contraception, STI testing and other health services to low-income Americans.

Nine Planned Parenthood state affiliates that receive federal money from the 55-year-old Title X family planning program got notices Monday, which they shared with POLITICO, informing them that their funding is being "temporarily withheld." The notice pointed to "possible violations" of federal civil rights law and President Donald Trump's executive orders — including prohibitions on promotion of diversity, equity and inclusion and "taxpayer subsidization of open borders."…

South Carolina woman sues state alongside Planned Parenthood over abortion ban : NPR

But physicians who specialize in reproductive health have called the "fetal heartbeat" language misleading.

Vicki Ringer, the director of public affairs for Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, said the definition describes two different points in pregnancy: an electrical impulse that appears at roughly six weeks and an actual heart, which Ringer said does not begin to form until at least nine weeks.

"This is what happens when you have legislators that try to practice medicine," said Ringer…
