Clergy abuse survivors say there’s still ‘long ways to go’ after sentencing of New Orleans priest

Hecker showed up unannounced in the weight room one day and made small talk with the boy about sports. He suddenly put the child in a wrestling-style headlock until he was unconscious and raped him, according to court filings.

The survivor later told his mother and school officials about the rape. But he said the principal, Paul Calamari, never alerted police. Instead, Calamari threatened the survivor with expulsion unless he underwent psychological treatment for what the school official dismissed as "anger issues and fantasy stories".

Hecker initially denied those accusations. But in 1999, he did admit in writing to his church superiors that he had molested or sexually harassed several other children whom he met through his ministry...

The victims, Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Parker, described in court this week the horrifying ordeal in which they were assaulted with a stun gun and sex toys and subjected to a mock execution over ninety minutes on Jan. 24, 2023.

The broader influence of the prosecutions of the former officers remained unclear as civil rights activists spoke out at a town hall meeting this week in Jackson, Miss., to demand more accountability in the case, including the resignation of Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey…

‘They felt no need to stop the brutality’: Colorado paramedic gets five-year prison term for killing Elijah McClain

On 24 August 2019, McClain, a massage therapist, was walking home from the store listening to music on his headphones when a passing driver called 911 to report a "sketchy" person who "might be a good person or a bad person". The caller noted he did not see any weapons and did not believe anyone was in danger.

Nathan Woodyard, the first officer to stop McClain, was immediately aggressive and grabbed him, saying he was "being suspicious". Two other officers, Randy Roedema and Jason Rosenblatt, soon arrived and tackled McClain to the ground, placing him in a neck hold and putting their body weight on him, causing him to go in and out of consciousness.

McClain, an animal lover who had taught himself violin, apologized, repeatedly said, "I can't breathe" and also said, "I'm an introvert … Why are you attacking me? I don't even kill flies."

Cichuniec ordered ketamine from the ambulance and Cooper injected McClain with 500mg, even though 325mg would have been the appropriate dose for someone of his weight, prosecutors said…

Jan. 6 defendant who wanted to arrest 'the traitors' sentenced to four years

Badalian, Jackson said, "can't let go of the false story of bringing down antifa," referring to a video that shows Badalian grabbing a person breaking a Capitol window who he claims is a member of antifa. Online sleuths have since identified that person, who is a Trump supporter but who has not been arrested by the FBI.

"What you attacked was the Constitution," Jackson said. "You were attacking the very foundation of the nation itself."

"You are a legend in your own mind," she told Badalian. "A hero in your own head."

There had to be consequences for his "misguided, violent vigilantism. You do not think the rules apply to you," Jackson said, before informing him that he would be committed to the custody of the U.S. Marshals immediately...

Kentucky man gets record-setting 14 year sentence for role in Capitol attack

Schwartz's attorneys requested a prison sentence of four years and six months, saying his actions were motivated by a "misunderstanding" about the 2020 presidential election. Donald Trump and his allies spread baseless conspiracy theories that Democrats stole the election from the Republican incumbent.

"There remain many grifters out there who remain free to continue propagating the 'great lie' that Trump won the election, Donald Trump being among the most prominent. Mr Schwartz is not one of these individuals; he knows he was wrong," his defense lawyers wrote…
