Mike Johnson’s budget blueprint faces Senate GOP buzzsaw - POLITICO

One GOP senator, granted anonymity to speak candidly, said they were “skeptical” the Senate would advance a third reconciliation bill because some GOP colleagues “fear taking vote-a-rama votes right before the election.”

Plus, Republicans already don’t believe they will be able to get Trump’s main priority — parts of the SAVE America Act — into the bill amid pushback from some of their own members, let alone whether the provisions would adhere to the chamber’s strict rules for what can be included under the reconciliation process...

Senators will ‘insist on offsets’ in reconciliation bill, Ron Johnson says - Live Updates - POLITICO

He told reporters Monday, ahead of the House rollout, that identifying offsetting cuts“would certainly be one of my objectives.

” But that risks putting him at odds with Thune, who has voiced concerns that pursuing spending cuts to health care or other sensitive programs could blow back on vulnerable members just before the midterms...

In the letter, the members also told Johnson the next bill should eliminate clean energy tax credits — something they pushed for in the first reconciliation bill last year. The lawmakers are also asking for reforms to health care, the removal of certain firearm-related taxes and “responsible short-term funding for key government personnel and services” to prevent another government shutdown ahead of the midterms...

‘Anorexic’ reconciliation bill could mean Planned Parenthood gets re-funded - POLITICO

“Congressional Republicans are spending their time making political calculations about their wildly unpopular agenda all while over a million people’s access to care hangs in the balance,” Sarah Guggenheimer, a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood Action Fund, said in a statement to POLITICO. “Until the moment that Planned Parenthood health center patients are no longer at risk of having their health care taken from them and their lives upended, Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s fight will continue.”…

Brian Fitzpatrick delivers a warning on GOP reconciliation redo

Still, many of Fitzpatrick's colleagues are making plans for an expansive new GOP-only bill that would include more money for Homeland Security operations, Iran war funding and other cost-of-living priorities, while demanding it be fully offset with spending cuts — possibly from social programs targeted for "fraud prevention."

Republicans trying to change rules to avoid House vote on Trump tariffs | Trump tariffs | The Guardian

The sleight of hand was embedded in procedural rule legislation setting up debate on a separate issue: the budget resolution that is central to Trump's agenda.

If adopted, the rule would in effect stall until October a Democratic effort to force a floor vote on a resolution disapproving of the national emergency that Trump declared last week to justify the tariffs. This mirrors a similar tactic used previously to shield Trump's earlier tariffs…

Why it matters that Manchin balked at McConnell’s hostage gambit

A couple of weeks ago, the Kentucky Republican announced a new hostage plan: If Democrats pursued a budget reconciliation bill to lower the cost of medications, McConnell said, Republicans would kill the competitiveness bill, which he ostensibly supports, even if that results in helping China…

Opinion | Get the message right, Democrats: The reconciliation bill is about supporting families - The Washington Post

… the survey shows overwhelming support among Democrats (61 percent) for "helping families directly and spending money on programs and institutions," and even 43 percent of Republicans agree. "The most popular form of benefit is cash assistance, and Americans favor an average benefit of around $2,400 per year." That suggests adding up the cash benefits under Biden's proposals would be beneficial so that voters understand what they are receiving. Moreover, a strong plurality (48 percent) want the wealthy to pay for these benefits, as Biden's plan proposes…
