Massachusetts court orders continued Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood

Talwani wrote that she wasn't preventing the federal government from regulating abortion, or directing it to fund elective abortions or other services not eligible for Medicaid coverage.

But she said the freeze prevents the Trump administration from "targeting a specific group of entities—Planned Parenthood Federation Members—for exclusion from reimbursements under the Medicaid program" when they showed "substantial likelihood" that such a targeted exclusion is unconstitutional...

But the 40-year-old is a U.S. citizen, born in Newton and raised in Sharon… "The language in the email is very threatening," she said. "And it looks kind of like a sketchy spam email. It doesn't look like an official government notice, but it is."…

Man arrested for allegedly throwing pipe bomb at Satanic Temple

Sean Patrick Palmer, 49, of Perkins, Oklahoma, was arrested on charges of "using an explosive to cause damage to a building used in interstate or foreign commerce", the United States' attorney office for the district of Massachusetts said in a statement.

The Satanic Temple does not actually worship the devil or believe in the existence of Satan or the supernatural, but rather uses Satan as a symbol of free will, humanism and anti-authoritarianism. It regularly angers rightwingers and Christians...

Massachusetts Switches On Its First Large Offshore Wind Farm - The New York Times

The power started flowing late on Tuesday. For now, the Vineyard Wind project, located off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, Mass., can send only five megawatts of power to the grid from a single towering wind turbine. But the companies behind the project, Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, plan to install a total of 62 turbines with 800 megawatts of capacity, or roughly enough electricity to power 400,000 homes, by the end of this year...

Interior Department approves the Vineyard Wind offshore wind project, first large-scale project in the country - The Washington Post

… "If you think about how complex it is to erect a wind turbine in the middle of the ocean — you need engineers, you need operating engineers, you need laborers, you need electricians, plumbers, pipe fitters, and they have to be highly trained, highly skilled," she said. "It's actually very dangerous work. And it's skilled work. But they're good, high-paying jobs."…

Massachusetts shop says employee quit after reopening over lack of social distancing, harassment | TheHill

A Massachusetts ice cream shop said it was forced to shutter a day after it reopened after customers used profanity with workers over social distancing guidelines. Polar Ice Cream Parlour owner Mark Lawrence told CNN affiliate WFXT that one worker quit her job at the Mashpee business on the first day of reopening. "One of my best workers quit yesterday at the end of her shift. She stuck it through her shift," Lawrence said. "But the words she was called and the language, you wouldn't even say in a men's locker room. And to say it to a 17-year-old kid, they should be ashamed of themselves." ....

Tribe That Drew Trump's Fire Over Casino Plan Loses Its Reservation Status | HuffPost

The U.S. Interior Department is rescinding the reservation status of a Native American tribe whose plan to build a casino on its Massachusetts land was attacked by President Donald Trump last year. The healthiest state was the first to embrace universal insurance, the least healthy rejected it

If you live in Massachusetts, then give yourself a pat on the back, or maybe sneak one extra holiday treat. That's because you live in the healthiest state in the nation, followed by Hawaii, Vermont, Utah, and Connecticut. Less good, all of this:....

Crime Lab Scandal Forces Prosecutors to Disavow Thousands of Drug Convictions

During her career as a Massachusetts lab chemist, Annie Dookhan has admitted to making up drug test results and tampering with samples, in the process helping send scores of people to prison. Her work may have touched some 24,000 cases.

On April 18, nearly five years after Dookhan’s confession, prosecutors submitted lists of about 21,587 tainted cases with flawed convictions that they have agreed to overturn. The state’s highest court must still formally dismiss the convictions....

White House senior adviser repeats baseless claim about busing illegal voters in New Hampshire

President Donald Trump won the election but he lost New Hampshire, a fact he has tried to explain by arguing that liberal voters from Massachusetts crossed into New Hampshire to cast their vote against him. ...

... ABC’s George Stephanopoulos repeatedly pressed Trump senior adviser Stephen Miller for evidence for Trump’s statement multiple times in a Feb. 12 interview on This Week.

"I’ve actually, having worked before on a campaign in New Hampshire, I can tell you that this issue of busing voters in to New Hampshire is widely known by anyone who’s worked in New Hampshire politics. It’s very real, it’s very serious," Miller said. "This morning on this show is not the venue for me lay out all the evidence."...

How Legalized Marijuana Is Playing Out In The State That Started It All | Morning Edition

Marijuana is now legal in Massachusetts. As of 12:01 Thursday morning, adults over the age of 21 can possess up to an ounce of marijuana on their person, and have another 9 ounces for personal use kept locked at home. Adults can also now grow up to six marijuana plants, a maximum of 12 per household.

Black Men May Have Cause To Run From Police, Massachusetts High Court Says

A black man who runs from police shouldn't necessarily be considered suspicious — and merely might be trying to avoid "the recurring indignity of being racially profiled," the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court says.

The court made that observation as it overturned the conviction of a man who was charged with carrying a firearm without a permit after he ran from a Boston police officer who, the court says in its ruling, "lacked reasonable suspicion" to try to stop him in the first place....

Has Mass. found a compromise to transgender bathroom debate?

Massachusetts may have found a compromise for the transgender bathroom debate, which has states across the country railing against federal guidance advising that transgender people use the bathroom or locker room associated with their gender identity.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker voiced his approval for a new bill currently in the state’s House of Representative, after months of declining to say whether he would support transgender rights legislation in line with the federal standard.

The new Massachusetts measure would allow transgender people to use the bathroom in line with the gender they associate with rather than their birth gender, but would include a provision addressing those who would claim a different gender identity “for an improper purpose.”...
