College, university aid: which students are getting grant money

College is expensive for most families, to be sure. And they all scramble to make it work.

But for low-income families, high tuition costs can rule out school altogether — financial burdens were cited by U.S. adults as the top reason for not pursuing an advanced degree in a Gallup survey this year. The system isn't set-up to attract lower-income students, Granville says.

"There's very little working to benefit students who are on the fence about attending college at all."…

Native American universities and colleges brace for crippling Trump cuts

"Our tribal colleges are a deep expression of self-determination and sovereignty. These education systems were created to support and build tribal leadership, to create education systems in which Native students can thrive and can build our economies," Rose said. "Not only are the proposed cuts a direct attack against the trust and treaty responsibility that the federal government has to postsecondary institutions, it inhibits tribes' ability to direct self-determination in our own education systems." She added that her organization and the institutions were connecting with the current administration to underscore just how critical Department of Interior funding is to tribal colleges.

Researchers report stunning surge of misogyny in schools after the election | PBS News

"In just a 24-hour period after Election Day, the Institute for Strategic Dialogue tracked a 4600 percent increase in mentions of the terms, "Your body, my choice" and "Get back in the kitchen" on the social media platform X. One post by far right activist Nick Fuentes has been viewed nearly 100 million times. But the misogyny is not just online..."

What I learned when Turning Points USA came to my campus | Cas Mudde | The Guardian

Fourth, and most optimistically, the sea of Maga hats also gave me a shimmer of hope for the upcoming election. Since Trump's shock 2016 win, the media has obsessed about "shy Trump supporters", that is, people who support Trump in the elections but do not say so in polls because of social desirability. Although empirical evidence has always been weak, the "shy Trump voter" never disappeared from the public debate. Seeing these students wear the Maga hats, not for fun or provocation, but as a "normal" expression of support for the "conservative" candidate in the presidential election, confirmed my suspicion that there are no "shy Trumpers" left in 2024.

And, if this is true, there might still be hope, in the sense that the current polls are overrepresenting the Trump vote, because they are overcompensating for a dated phenomenon, the shy Trump voter, yet another victim of the normalization of Trump...

Florida university to host extremist after DeSantis-led lurch to right

Sailer, 65, of Los Angeles, California, has no known academic qualifications in biology or any other scientific field. He has publicly claimed a BA, an MBA and a period of corporate employment that ended in 2000.

But he has been instrumental in the revival of eugenic thinking under the euphemism "human biodiversity" (HBD), has drawn on the ideas of self-described eugenicists and scientific racists, and has appeared on conference stages alongside prominent white nationalists and antisemites.

His work in turn is cited by white supremacists: the Guardian found dozens of favorable references to Sailer on the neo-Nazi forum Stormfront. His central claims include the idea that social racial categories – Black, white or Hispanic – have a biological basis, and that this is revealed in differences in intelligence and other attributes.

Scientists say this is wrong...

Opinion | Taliban's ban on women in university is a massive blow - The Washington Post

The latest shot came on Tuesday, when the Taliban decreed that women are now barred from attending universities in Afghanistan, effective immediately and indefinitely. It's a project that began in March, when it banned girls from attending school past sixth grade yet kept universities open…

Awful Things We Believed at My Evangelical University

I graduated from an evangelical university. We believed total nonsense.
Before my deconstruction of Christianity, I attended an evangelical university. Personally, I had a decent experience, probably due to my demographic and then-fundamentalism. In hindsight, though, I see that many of our common beliefs were not only ridiculous, but dangerous. We thought God could give us the ability to control (AKA completely repress) our sexual needs, that education could threaten our faith if we weren’t careful, and that Jesus can make gay people straight.
These ideas permeate the cultures of other Christian universities too. Whether it’s Liberty U, Biola, Houston Baptist University, or any other of the sort, these ideas thrive. If only these colleges could see that evangelists like Christopher Yuan are not more reliable sources than actual scientific data.

Racist video proposes to ‘euthanize’ black students, prompts calls for action at Floyd’s alma mater - The Washington Post

Video of a young man using racial slurs to describe black students at Texas A&M University at Kingsville — calling them "apes" whom "we might have to euthanize" — has people calling for George Floyd's alma mater to go beyond its public denunciation to address the racist act. The video, posted on social media sites earlier this week, shows the man pointing to a group of black students playing basketball outside of a campus dormitory as he and a voice behind the camera repeatedly use the n-word. ....

Syracuse University Students 'Terrified' After Racist Manifesto Circulated On Campus | HuffPost

Students and faculty at Syracuse University say they’ve been left “distraught” and “terrified” following a string of racist incidents and hate crimes on campus, including the distribution this week of a white supremacist manifesto that reportedly contained virulently anti-immigrant language and neo-Nazi symbols....
