MIT rejects White House proposal to overhaul policies for preferential funding | MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology | The Guardian

The proposed Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education – which was sent to nine US higher education institutions including MIT, Brown University, Dartmouth College, the University of Arizona, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Southern California, the University of Texas at Austin, Vanderbilt University and the University of Virginia – would require universities to impose several restrictions. 

Among them is a cap on international student enrollment, a five-year tuition freeze, strict gender definitions and a prohibition on anything that might "belittle" conservative viewpoints...

New York Becomes First State to Offer Free Four-Year College

New York will be the only state in the country to offer universal public college tuition coverage for working- and middle-class residents after the program was included in the budget package approved Sunday night. The state's Excelsior Scholarship program will be rolled out in tiers over the next three years, starting with full coverage of four-year college tuition this fall for students whose families make less than $100,000. The income cap will increase to $110,000 in 2018 and $125,000 in 2019....

What you need to know about New York's tuition-free scholarship

Though other places have free community college, New York is the first to make tuition free at four-year public colleges as well. Governor Andrew Cuomo introduced the tuition-free legislation in January and lawmakers approved the plan this weekend. Middle-class families could save up to $25,880 for a four-year degree at a State University or City University of New York school.

Does free college equal more degrees? Detroit to test popular theory (+video)

Going to college just got dramatically more do-able for Detroit students, thanks to a "Detroit Promise" plan that will offer free community college to local high school graduates.

The city has secured permanent funding to cover two years at any of six local colleges for graduates of the Detroit Public Schools, Mayor Mike Duggan announced Tuesday. The state has already committed to instituting similar programs in 10 low-income cities in Michigan, all modeled after the largely successful "Kalamazoo Promise" begun in that city in 2005....
