Trump SSI Rule Change Targets Disabled Adults Who Live With Families — ProPublica

Now, President Donald Trump’s administration is poised to penalize people like Burton simply for living in the same home as their families, according to four federal officials, internal emails and a federal regulatory listing. The administration is working on a rule change that would deduct the value of a disabled adult’s bedroom from their SSI allotment, even if the family members they live with are poor enough to qualify for food stamps. This would mean slashing the benefits of some of the most low-income SSI recipients by up to a third — about $330 a month in Burton’s case — or ending their support altogether...

Trump’s USDA Is Hiding the Data on Food Stamp Cuts – Mother Jones

Millions of adults ages of 55 to 64 may now be locked out of the program if they're not able to work—and in a one-two punch of attacks on federal services, the USDA has terminated its annual food insecurity survey, making it impossible to know just how devastating an impact Trump's backdoor SNAP cuts will have on aging adults who are unable to get exemptions from their state...

Trump says he will ‘permanently pause’ migration from ‘third world countries’ after national guard shooting

In a social media post beginning with "a very happy Thanksgiving," sent after 11pm on Thursday, the US president said his administration would "end all federal benefits and subsidies to noncitizens" and remove "anyone who is not a net asset to the United States".

It as not clear how the president would enact such a "pause" in migration. Previous bans issued by his administration have faced challenges in the courts and in Congress...

Republicans want to give gig workers benefits. There’s a catch. | Vox

But unions strongly opposed these efforts. Labor groups have long fought against worker misclassification, where wrongly designating employees as contractors allows employers to sidestep payroll taxes, unemployment insurance, minimum wage laws and other obligations. Unions view codifying portable benefits largely as a way to keep misclassifying workers and therefore cut them off from core workplace protections, including the right to unionize…

Doge’s attack on social security causing ‘complete, utter chaos’, staff says

"It's just been a lot of craziness, a lot of foolishness. Until they get rid of Doge and the person in office right now, and the Republicans actually get a backbone and stand up for something for once in their lives, things are just going to be complete chaos. That's really the best word to describe SSA right now, just complete, utter chaos," the worker added. "They couldn't understand the coding, so everything they said SSA was doing illegally, they weren't. Common sense is something they lack. They don't know what they're doing."…

Social Security Changes Could Make It Harder to Claim Benefits - Business Insider

"There has been zero communication on this since that press release," they said. They said a coworker was currently fielding phone calls from beneficiaries about the new change, with nearly every call related to recipients asking if they needed to come into a field office.

Veterans cuts spark GOP backlash on Capitol Hill - POLITICO

"It's political malpractice not to consult Congress if that's what you intend to do," Graham said. "Maybe you've got a good reason to do it. I like Doug Collins — he's a great guy. But we don't need to be reading memos in the paper about 20 percent cut at the VA."…

Trump signs executive order targeting ‘benefits for illegal aliens’

The White House said the order seeks to end "all taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal aliens" but it was not clear which benefits will be targeted. People in the country illegally generally do not qualify except for emergency medical care. Children are entitled to a free K-12 public education regardless of immigration status under a 1982 supreme court ruling...

To Pay for Trump Tax Cuts, House GOP Could Slash Benefits for Poor, Working Class — ProPublica

Other proposals would eliminate tax breaks for families with children.

Currently, parents can get a tax credit of up to $2,100 for child care expenses. The House Republican plan floats the elimination of that break. The cut is estimated to save $55 billion over a decade…

Another proposal in the list of options takes aim squarely at parents raising children on their own. The provision would eliminate the "head of household" filing status to collect almost $200 billion more in taxes over a decade from single parents and other adults caring for dependents on their own…
