People Are Underestimating America’s Groyper Problem - The Atlantic

Last year, David Shor, a data scientist who did polling for Kamala Harris's presidential campaign, surveyed nearly 130,000 voters and found that a quarter of young people had an "unfavorable opinion" of Jews—not Israel, Jews—far more than their elders. Today, some of the top podcasts in the country regularly feature overtly anti-Semitic conspiracy content, whether it's Tucker Carlson rehabilitating Hitler, Candace Owens claiming that Israel had a hand in the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Charlie Kirk, or Joe Rogan hosting a conspiracy theorist who fulminated about how a "giant group of Jewish billionaires is running a sex-trafficking operation targeting American politicians and business people."

And it's not just words...

Are You a ‘Heritage American’? The Online Right Would Like to Know. - POLITICO

The goal of the heritage America movement is to roll back the clock on creedal nationalism, but its members are a bit vague — perhaps by design — about how they intend to do that. Many of them agree that the effort should start with curtailing immigration of both the illegal and legal varieties, with the end goal of restricting immigration to a handful of select countries. Most support the Trump administration's ongoing effort to end birthright citizenship. "It's not like we're going to go around to people's doors giving them DNA tests, but we recognize the fact that, on the basis of cultural similarity, people from Western Europe are going to fit in better with the American way of life than people from Haiti," said Engel. He quickly added: "That's not a racially charged statement — it's a culturally charged statement."…

‘These people are disposable’: how Russia is using online recruits for a campaign of sabotage in Europe

On the ground, the acts are carried out by people who are recruited online and often paid in cryptocurrency. Some know exactly what they are doing and why, others do not realise they are ultimately working for Moscow. The professional intelligence officers who direct the operations never need to leave Russian territory.

This account of Russia's sabotage offensive is based on thousands of pages of court documents from Britain and Poland, interviews with current and former security and intelligence officials in several European countries and the US, and discussions with people who knew some of the perpetrators...

Recent school shooters appear to have crossed paths in online extremist groups

The US state department recently designated the online extremist Terrorgram Collective as a terrorist group. Along with promoting white supremacy, the group encourages violent attacks and "provides guidance and instructional materials on tactics, methods and targets for attacks, including on critical infrastructure and government officials"...

On popular online platforms, predatory groups coerce children into self-harm - Washington Post

Unlike many "sextortion" schemes that seek money or increasingly graphic images, these perpetrators are chasing notoriety in a community that glorifies cruelty, victims and law enforcement officials say. The FBI issued a public warning in September identifying eight such groups that target minors between the ages of 8 and 17, seeking to harm them for the members' "own entertainment or their own sense of fame."…

Free Returns Are Complicated, Laborious, and Gross - The Atlantic

Meet the Customer Service Reps for Disney and Airbnb Who Have to Pay to Talk to You — ProPublica

... After paying about $1,500 for home office equipment: a computer, two headsets and a phone line dedicated to Arise; after paying Arise to run a check on her background; after passing Arise's voice-assessment test and signing Arise's nondisclosure form; after paying for and passing Arise's introductory training, to which she devoted three days, unpaid; after paying for and passing a certification course to provide customer service for Arise client AT&T, to which she devoted 44 unpaid days; after then being informed she had to get more training yet — an additional 10 days, for which she was told she would be paid, but wasn't; and then, after finally getting a chance to sign up for hours and do work for which she would be paid (except for her time spent waiting for technical support, or researching customer issues, or huddling with supervisors), Tami Pendergraft spent three weeks fielding telephone calls from AT&T customers, after which she received a single paycheck. For $96.12...

Online privacy experts sound alarm as US Senate bill sparks surveillance fears

A US Senate bill that critics say would enable widespread censorship and surveillance has taken a significant step towards becoming law, raising alarm among internet freedom advocates. The Senate judiciary committee voted on Thursday to advance the Earn It Act, legislation that on paper is intended to address sexual exploitation. However, privacy experts say the act would give the Department of Justice unprecedented power over the internet and potentially threaten the privacy of messages sent online.

Trump team now 'racing' to allow federal workers to work from home—after killing prior programs

We are now entering the crisis phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. It did not have to be that way, but the Trump team's preparedness delays appear to have damaged the U.S. response to the outbreak so severely, in the still-ongoing inability to test patients even in known outbreak centers, that we still have no idea what the true number of exposed and infected Americans truly is. This renders "containment" impossible. At the moment it seems likely that the path of the pandemic in America will be following that of Italy, where hospitals are overwhelmed, rather than the effective, test-heavy slow-and-contain strategy of South Korea. ....
