Lula’s Suprise Win Blocks Trump’s Push for a Far-Right Brazil – Mother Jones

After Sunday’s election results in a neck-and-neck race, their wishes will have to be deferred. In a historic comeback, incumbent President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva narrowly fended off his opponent’s bid to restore a far-right government to Latin America’s largest economy that would have further painted the map of Trump’s geopolitical aspirations for “American preeminence” in the region orange…

The Far Right Can’t Stand Being Called “Far Right” – Mother Jones

Scholars, however, “don’t use the term ‘far right’ in a purely relative way,” Mudde added. “Rather, the far right stands for a core ideology of nativism and authoritarianism. Nativism is a xenophobic form of nationalism and authoritarianism emphasis the crucial importance for the state to enforce discipline and order (simply stated). In this sense, the term is accurate for the parties and politicians mentioned here.”

Sam Jackson, an associate professor at the University at Albany and an expert on right-wing extremism in the U.S., says right-wing objections to the term are animated by an element of branding and publicity management. There is, he told me, “a strategic view that if something is portrayed as the far right then most people wouldn’t agree with or would reject it.” Therefore, he added, rejecting the label “far right” is a tactic used by people who are saying, in essence, “‘I want to make it sound like my ideas are common and widespread. If I accept the framing of ‘far right’ that inherently positions me as being more marginal.'” The label carries a special stigma in Germany, where, he pointed out, “to be far right is to be associated with the Nazi regime, which is still problematic for many reasons—even if that’s starting to change.”…

The Right Is Targeting Abdul El-Sayed’s Family Members – Mother Jones

Since Abdul El-Sayed’s win earlier this month to become the Democratic nominee for Michigan’s US Senate seat, the right has ramped up its attacks on him, condemning his past comments as evidence of him being a “terrorist” and “radical Islamist” or a “jihadist sympathizer” who is “infiltrating from within”. But it has also targeted El-Sayed’s family—including his wife, Sarah Jukaku, a psychiatrist, and his half-sister, Eman Abdelhadi, a writer and assistant professor at the University of Chicago...

Pete Hegseth’s Pentagon picks raise questions over Trump family business ties

The appointments by the US defense secretary not only appear to increase the influence of rightwing ideologues, autonomous weapons manufacturers, and one-time clients of authoritarian states on the world’s most powerful arsenal, but to potentially put the financial interests of the US president’s family at the heart of setting US strategic priorities...

Trump Administration Suggested Funding Afrikaner Group in South Africa — ProPublica

Recently, we published our investigation that found one answer to that question in a little-known bureau of the State Department that has dramatically transformed under Trump. For decades, the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, known as DRL, has supported human rights in some of the most oppressive countries in the world. Now, our reporting found, it’s planning to direct funds to controversial groups supporting right-wing causes in Europe and elsewhere…

Crisis looms for Pope Leo as splinter sect seeks to ordain traditionalist bishops

The mounting tension between the Vatican and the SSPX comes as rightwing Catholics have shown an increasing willingness to tussle with the Vatican over political and theological disagreements. Some Catholics in the US, where the most influential lay members tend to be both conservative and wealthy, have supported the Trump administration even as its stances on immigration and foreign policy clash with those of the Vatican…

The sect has been dogged throughout its history by accusations of antisemitism and ties to the extreme right.

The Nazi collaborator and convicted war criminal Paul Touvier was arrested at an SSPX priory in France in 1989. (The SSPX said it had taken him in as an act of charity.) In 2009, an SSPX bishop told the press that he believed that no more than 300,000 Jews were killed in the Holocaust. In 2013, the SSPX sparked outrage in Italy by officiating a funeral for a convicted Nazi war criminal, Erich Priebke, who had been denied burial by the Catholic diocese of Rome…

When the right denies the true danger of heatwaves, ask yourself this: whose children’s lives is it willing to risk?

The class politics of extreme heat are very real and very dangerous – but that doesn’t stop the billionaire press from peddling its agenda…

How a far-right group tried to assassinate Trump at his own event

According to investigators, the conspirators were enraged by the Trump administration’s continued alliance with Israel. Proper praised Adolf Hitler in posts on social media. Another alleged plotter, Michael Alan Thomas, 32, “indicated that he believes that the U.S. government is run by an elite group of individuals who sacrifice and consume infants who also were deeply involved with [Jeffrey] Epstein and are now protected by President Donald Trump,” an affidavit said, adding that Thomas also “places some of the responsibility of this corruption of government [on] Jewish people and blames them and Israel for the current war with Iran”.

He and his co-conspirators allegedly thought that their attack would bring about (or “accelerate”) a second American Revolution...

The rightwing campaign to control how US judges view the climate crisis

As cities and states sue big oil for billions in damages over allegations that it covered up the dangers of its products, rightwing organizations are attempting to discredit the wave of litigation. They claim the lawyers behind it are teaming up with an environmentally focused legal education non-profit to bias federal judges against oil companies.

But it is actually fossil fuel-backed organizations that are attempting to sway the judiciary in their favor, one of those law firms is countering. Evidence of this includes judicial seminars hosted by one such group featuring pro-industry speakers such as the current energy secretary, Chris Wright, in his former occupation as a fracking executive…
