‘Very Republican, very patriotic’: right-leaning civic centers now offer courses at US public colleges

Housed in one of Ohio State's sturdy brick buildings, the center has 20 faculty members teaching nine credit-bearing courses this academic year. Most of its lectures and other events have a decidedly right-leaning bent. In 2023, Ohio state legislators allocated $24m in tax dollars to create the Chase Center and four others like it on Ohio campuses and to influence the details of university operations in a manner that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.

It's part of a new conservative playbook: a growing number of Republican legislators are using their power in the name of intellectual diversity to get right-leaning professors in front of all students, including, and maybe especially, the liberal ones. They are stepping in to influence who is hired and what is taught on public campuses, hoping to wrest back control from what they say has been an unchecked leftwing indoctrination of America's college students...

Justice Department struggles as thousands exit – and few are replaced - The Washington Post

"I was astonished. I have never seen anything like that. When I came to the U.S. attorney's office, I had won 13 state murder prosecutions, and I still thought I had such a slim chance of getting a job because it was such an ultracompetitive place," said Mark Rotert, a retired Chicago-based attorney who worked as a federal prosecutor there in the '80s and '90s and received the recruiting email from a friend. "Now it's like, 'If you ever threw a pass, do you want to be a quarterback?'"…

Elizabeth Warren introduces bill to ban employers from running credit reports in hiring

"Nobody should be discriminated against and miss out on a job opportunity because of their financial history," Warren said in a statement to the Guardian. Zuckerberg’s boring, bleak AI bet | Vox

The promise of AI, to Zuckerberg, is that it can help him sell you more ads and convince you to spend more time watching Instagram brainrot. My reaction to that pitch was the same as AI writer Zvi Mowshowitz's: "It was like if you took a left wing caricature of why Zuckerberg is evil, combined it with a left wing caricature about why AI is evil, and then fused them into their final form. Except it's coming directly from Zuckerberg, as explicit text, on purpose." …

Harvard faculty hiring: A clash of free speech and diversity

But the pressing issue at stake here is that the administration cannot identify a limit to such viewpoint diversity. If a candidate for a position in the government department has a sincere political belief that the 2020 election was stolen, should they be hired in the interest of "viewpoint diversity" although they would not meet the academic standards required for a serious candidate in political science? If they are not hired by the school, does the federal government have the power to punish the university? What does this mean for current faculty who disagree with the administration? "Ideological vetting" is already happening to the school's prospective international students; it is not a stretch to imagine that that vetting might extend to faculty and domestic students too...

Biases against Black-sounding first names can lead to discrimination in hiring, especially when employers make decisions in a hurry − new research

We found that the names of workers perceived as Black, such as Shanice or Terell, were more likely to elicit negative presumptions, such as being less educated, productive, trustworthy and reliable, than people with either white-sounding names, such as Melanie or Adam, or racially ambiguous names, such as Krystal or Jackson…

Trump's Labor Department wants to 'weaponize' right-wing discrimination and bigotry - Raw Story

Just in case you wanted to believe that the Trump administration isn't on a campaign to trample rights for Americans, here comes the Labor Department to shove a grapefruit in your face. Labor officials have made public a new rule—no Congress, needed, thank you—to allow companies contracting with the federal government who are "religion-exercising organizations" to ignore federal laws protecting the rights of gays, transsexuals, and who knows who else in hiring or workplace practices.....
