US appeals court strikes down key part of Florida law restricting campus race and gender discussions

A federal appeals panel struck down a significant chunk of Ron DeSantis’s so-called Stop Woke Act on Tuesday, delivering another rebuff to the Republican Florida governor’s efforts to stifle free speech in higher education.

In a scathing order, judges of the 11th circuit court of appeal said by a 2-1 majority that the higher education component of the law – which prevented college and university professors teaching or sharing thoughts on concepts of race and gender – breached the free expression rights guaranteed under the US constitution’s first amendment. Outrage over ‘cruel’ Florida move to ban undocumented students from college

“The attempt to restrict a child’s access to higher education based on the documentation status that is no fault of their own is un-American, it’s unfaithful, and it’s absolutely also constitutionally concerning because, obviously, we did not pass legislation on this matter,” she said…

GOP-led Florida House tanks AI, medical freedom proposals pushed by DeSantis -

“I understand the governor’s concern of wanting to protect children. We want to protect children, too. He is not wrong for wanting that. I agree with him, with that sentiment,” Perez said Tuesday. “

But we have seen very clearly, the president of the United States issued an executive order stating that the federal government should take handle of the AI policies of this country, that this is a national security concern, that this is bigger than just one state or one part of the country.”…

DeSantis signs Florida's version of SAVE America Act, draws immediate lawsuit - POLITICO

But opponents — who are now calling it the "show your papers" law — maintain the new requirements will ultimately lead to eligible voters being pushed off the voter rolls, including married women who have changed their names and older minority voters who were born in the South and may not have a birth certificate. The lawsuit filed Wednesday also questions whether it would affect Puerto Ricans born before 2010 who came to Florida following natural disasters such as Hurricane Maria...

‘Vance Is Handcuffed’: The Tech Fight Bedeviling 2028 Republicans - POLITICO

AI is poised to strike directly at the contradictions embedded within the new coalition that Trump has built: It will pit the new blue-collar members of the GOP base against the business-aligned sector that Trump has increasingly won over in his second term. It will pit family-values and religious conservatives against the newly emboldened tech wing.

And it is a policy issue that could prove particularly problematic for the 2028 contenders who are closest to Trump, because the Trump White House is pursuing an agenda on AI that is out of step with what many Trump-aligned voters and influencers want — especially the more populist elements that are increasingly prominent in the GOP's ranks...

Doge-ish comes to Florida: a DeSantis loyalist is going after ‘waste’ in Democratic cities

"We're the largest Democratic county in Florida. We have 2 million people and nine county commissioners, all of us Democrat. So is it a coincidence we're the first county they Doge'd, or that he announced the results before they had any data?" he said.

In addition to Broward, Ingoglia has appeared in recent days in several other Democratic-run municipalities, making broad allegations of fraud and excessive spending. But analysts say there is little evidence, other than a few individual examples of comparatively small amounts going towards LGBTQ+ events or diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives… "

Even Ingoglia admits he hasn't found any wasteful spending, but they're going after the things they like to go after, like Pride parades, DEI initiatives, things the DeSantis base is against.

"And going after his enemies allows him to ignore how he has wasted money on things like Alligator Alcatraz, a tax holiday for assault weapons, going after Disney in lawsuits that he keeps losing."…
