Senate Passes Defense Bill, Steering Clear of Far-Right Policy Dictates - The New York Times

Proposals that Republicans pushed through the House to ban transgender health care, diversity training officers and drag shows were also jettisoned from the final bill…

The House is expected to vote on the legislation on Thursday under fast-track procedures that offer opponents fewer chances to scuttle it, but which will require a two-thirds majority for passage. Leaders expect that it will pass with support from a coalition of Republicans and Democrats…

NSC-131 sued for violating civil rights of migrants, drag show hosts in Mass. - The Washington Post

NSC-131 members — wearing uniforms consisting of khaki pants, black shirts, ski masks, balaclavas and black hats — assaulted members of the public, blocked access to events within public libraries and participated in street fighting, the complaint alleged. During a Jan. 14 event at a public library in Taunton, Mass., police had to evacuate the performer through a side entrance after NSC-131 disrupted the event, scaring families and children in attendance, the complaint stated...

During an incident Oct. 30, 2022, roughly two dozen NSC-131 members arrived at the Baymont Inn and Suites hotel in Kingston and held up banners that read "REFUGEES NOT WELCOME" from a private driveway, which obstructed access to the main entrance, the complaint stated…https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/12/08/mass-white-nationalist-group-lawsuit/

Rampant child sexual abuse is occurring in churches — not at drag shows

"By comparison, there have been no credible reports, to my knowledge, of child sexual abuse at drag shows. And, of course, I'm only making the comparison here because many conservatives — including religious leaders in the Catholic Church and the Southern Baptist Convention — falsely equate drag shows or LGBTQ people with sexual perversion. In response, Republican lawmakers are pushing measures that bar minors from attending drag shows.

Will there now be a widespread push to bar children from churches given the thousands of reported sexual abuse incidents nationwide? Don't bet on it."

Ohio man charged for using Molotov cocktails to attack church ahead of planned drag shows - CBS News

The criminal complaint unsealed Friday revealed this was not Penny's first time targeting drag events. According to prosecutors, on March 11, he attended a drag queen story hour "to distribute propaganda flyers representing White Lives Matter, Ohio's anti-drag queen views," and was wearing, "military style gear including camouflage pants, a tactical vest, and jacket with a patch showing a firearm."

At that same event, according to the government, members of the White Lives Matter group "showed up at the event carrying swastika flags and shouting racial and anti-gay slurs and 'Heil Hitler.'"…

Students, advocates protest at Texas university that canceled drag show - The Washington Post

"As a university president, I would not support 'blackface' performances on our campus, even if told the performance is a form of free speech or intended as humor," Wendler wrote. "It is wrong. I do not support any show, performance or artistic expression which denigrates others — in this case, women — for any reason."

The students who put together the show strongly objected to those characterizations...

Why Tennessee's law limiting drag performances likely violates the First Amendment

Current Supreme Court decisions suggest that laws like the one just passed in Tennessee probably violate the First Amendment's protection of free speech. This is, in part, because many drag performances are protected by the First Amendment, which safeguards not only spoken, written, and signed speech but also many other actions meant to convey messages.

Republican legislators appear to have written the law to try to avoid running afoul of the First Amendment by treating drag shows as if they meet the legal definition of obscenity. Speech, including expressive conduct, that meets the Supreme Court's criteria for obscenity is not covered by First Amendment protection...

No, drag shows are not the same as strip shows - PolitiFact

Walker claimed that "strip shows" and "drag shows" were the same type of performance. Although both types of performance do include music and dancing, drag shows typically don't include the central feature of strip shows: nudity or the removal of clothing. We rate this claim False…

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis files complaint over a Miami drag show

…Brandon Wolf, press secretary for LGBTQ advocacy group Equality Florida, said in a statement that DeSantis has "shown that he is willing to bend state agencies to his will and weaponize them against marginalized communities, including LGBTQ people, in his quest to incite right wing fervor."
He also noted that the headquarters for Hooters, the restaurant chain known for its "Hooters girls," is in Clearwater, Florida, and shared a viral photo of a young boy posing with a Hooters girl.
"Has an investigation begun into parents taking their children to ogle in a restaurant with a name based on a sexualized premise/double entendre?" Wolf said. "What about bikini-clad gun show models? Since DeSantis is replacing a parent's judgment with his own, we will see how far the Governor's puritanical purge is going to go or if it is merely selectively enforced."…
