Pakistan’s patience runs out after badly miscalculating over Taliban

This week it became clear just how badly Pakistan had miscalculated how it could rely on the Taliban, as Islamabad unleashed airstrikes in Afghanistan and troops from both countries fought each other on the border.

A Qatari-mediated ceasefire ended the intense fighting in October, but several rounds of peace talks in Turkey in November failed to produce a lasting agreement. The two sides have occasionally traded fire since then...

Opinion | Harris’s role in Afghanistan, Ukraine and other national security hot spots - The Washington Post

They all expressed versions of the same basic theme: Harris behaves like the prosecutor she was for much of her career. She's skeptical, probing, sometimes querulous. She can be impatient and demanding. But she asks good questions. And if she's convinced of the need, she's not afraid to act. "She's more hard-line than most people think," said one retired four-star general who has briefed her many times.

One top member of her staff put it this way: "She's always the same person, pushing for information, making sure people aren't bulls----ing her." Retired military leaders endorse Harris, criticize Trump

The former military officers highlight the chaotic 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, placing the blame on Trump's shoulders for leaving President Biden and Harris with no plans to execute a withdrawal after his administration made a deal with the Taliban to pull U.S. service members from the country.

"This chaotic approach severely hindered the Biden-Harris Administration's ability to execute the most orderly withdrawal possible and put our service members and our allies at risk," they write…

Generals defend Harris on U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan

"Without involving the Afghan government, [Trump] and his Administration negotiated a deal with the Taliban that freed 5,000 Taliban fighters," the retired military officials wrote in a National Security Leaders for America letter first obtained by Axios.

The group accused Trump of leaving Biden and Harris with no plans to execute a withdrawal and little time to do so.

"This chaotic approach severely hindered the Biden-Harris Administration's ability to execute the most orderly withdrawal possible and put our service members and our allies at risk," they wrote.

Trump targets Kamala Harris, Tim Walz with entirely made-up claims

Trump spoke at the National Guard Association's conference and took care to blame Harris for America's withdrawal from Afghanistan three years ago, despite the fact that (a) it wasn't Harris' call, (b) Trump's the one who negotiated the withdrawal agreement, and (c) his own White House national security adviser said Trump bears some responsibility for what transpired...

Hundreds of cases of femicide recorded since Taliban takeover are ‘tip of the iceberg’

The analysis, which is one of the first attempts to try to collect data on the levels of sexual and physical violence against women in Afghanistan, also found 840 women and girls had been subject to gender-based violence from 1 January 2022 – when Afghan Witness began collating data – to 30 June this year, almost one a day.

More than half of the reported cases said that Taliban officials were responsible. Analysis of crimes allegedly perpetrated by the Taliban revealed 115 incidents of sexual violence, including forced marriage, sexual slavery, assault and rape...
