Appeals court upholds $1M penalty against Trump in lawsuit against Hillary Clinton - POLITICO

A federal appeals court has upheld a penalty of nearly $1 million against President Donald Trump and attorney Alina Habba, concluding they committed "sanctionable conduct" by filing a frivolous lawsuit against Hillary Clinton and former FBI Director James Comey.

"Many of Trump's and Habba's legal arguments were indeed frivolous," 11th Circuit Court of Appeals Chief Judge William Pryor Jr. wrote for a unanimous, three-judge panel, including Trump appointee Andrew Brasher and Biden appointee Embry Kidd.

Appeals court panel mulls $1M penalty for Trump in lawsuit against Hillary Clinton - POLITICO

In a scathing 2023 ruling, Florida-based U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrooks called Trump's lawsuit "a hodgepodge of disconnected, often immaterial events, followed by an implausible conclusion."

"This case should never have been brought. Its inadequacy as a legal claim was evident from the start. No reasonable lawyer would have filed it," wrote Middlebrooks, an appointee of President Bill Clinton. "This is a deliberate attempt to harass; to tell a story without regard to facts."

States reduce penalties for drivers who strike protesters — a threat cited in hundreds of police shootings - The Washington Post

... In some ways, states are applying the same logic to cars that they apply to firearms: Use one to defend yourself in a moment of crisis and it's okay. Aim it at a police officer and you risk being shot to death. But that invites an extension of the analogy. A Rand Corp. study found that states with "stand your ground" laws allowing residents to use firearms in self-defense were states that had more firearm homicides. Allowing people to use guns to kill in some circumstances correlated with more people using guns to kill...

Inspector general reports that ICE facilities have thousands of violations, only 2 penalties - Daily Kos

When Donald Trump's ICE forces are not wasting resources creating fake universities in order to entrap immigrants looking to better themselves by way of an education, they are … well, that's basically all they are doing. In a published set of findings from Jan. 31, 2019, the Office of the Inspector General reports that the terror Homeland Security agency definitely does not police or punish the detainee housing contractors that are funded by American taxpayers. ....

TX Federal Judge Rules Obamacare 'Invalid,' Appeals Sure To Follow - TPM

A conservative federal judge in Texas has ruled the Affordable Care Act "invalid" on the eve of the sign-up deadline for next year. But with appeals certain, even the Trump White House said the law will remain in place for now. In a 55-page opinion, U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor ruled Friday that last year's tax cut bill knocked the constitutional foundation from under "Obamacare" by eliminating a penalty for not having coverage. ....

Some Late Sign-Ups For Medicare May Be Able To Get Penalties Waived

Each year, thousands of Americans miss their deadline to enroll in Medicare, and federal officials and consumer advocates worry that many of them mistakenly think they don't need to sign up because they have purchased insurance on the Affordable Care Act's marketplaces. That failure to enroll on time can leave them facing a lifetime of penalties....
