Why does JD Vance keep saying loony things?

Vance is sending a clear message to Trump’s dedicated base that he’s just as good at stirring up hate and grievance as the man they elected twice as president. Better at it than the more moderate Marco Rubio, the secretary of state who is his most likely competitor for the 2028 Republican nomination.

In essence, he’s saying something like this: I might have written serious books and have a law degree from Yale but don’t worry, I hate the same people you do. And governmental malfeasance doesn’t rattle me.

As former labor secretary Robert Reich wrote recently, “Vance resembles Trump in every way – he lies effortlessly, he’s utterly without principle, and he’s intent on gaining power – except that he’s smarter and more ruthless than Trump.” Thus, a more dangerous demagogue...

After Kirk’s killing, a growing conservative campaign seeks to get his critics ostracized or fired | PBS News

After years of complaints from the right about "cancel culture" from the left, some conservatives are seeking to upend the lives and careers of those who disparaged Charlie Kirk after his death. They're going after companies, educators, news outlets, political rivals and others they judge as promoting hate speech.

A campaign by public officials and others on the right has led just days after the conservative activist's death to the firing or punishment of teachers, an Office Depot employee, government workers, a TV pundit and the expectation of more dismissals coming…

Young Democrats are right: There is no reason to date or befriend Trump voters - Raw Story - Celebrating 17 Years of Independent Journalism

The anger on the right over this polling, in turn, shows that this isn't really about liberal "intolerance," but an ugly sense of entitlement among conservatives. It's fueled by a belief that they should be as obnoxious, cruel, and bigoted as they want, without having to pay any social penalty for it…

Here are 6 things Trump actually deserves credit for -- and they're terrible -- Raw Story

Donald Trump is not telekinetic. His brain may be a medical marvel, but for terrible reasons, not because he can move objects with his mind. Nonetheless, Trump recently took credit for keeping airplanes all around the world from crashing in 2017. ....

Shrinking the Tent: How American Atheists Won’t Tolerate Intolerance – Friendly Atheist

As an organization, we embrace the broadest definition of “atheist,” which is someone who a lacks a belief in a deity, be it Thor, Zeus, Ganesh, Yahweh, Jesus, Mohammad, or any of the other thousands of gods that have been imagined for as long as people have been around. Atheists are the most maligned and underrepresented demographic in the country, so we must speak up in order to be counted. Our tent is a big one because atheists come from everywhere, and we need help from every kind of atheist: Democrats and Republicans, Libertarians and Socialists, conservatives and liberals, firebrands and diplomats. Reasonable people can have reasonable disagreements about reasonable topics. That’s what it means to be an American.

Today, we are living in a nation and world very different from just a year ago. ....

White Christians are now a minority — but they’re getting more isolated and less tolerant - Salon.com

Last week, the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) put out a new report on religion in America that measured a truly remarkable shift: For the first time, almost certainly in the country’s history, people who identify as white Christians are a minority of Americans. Four out of every five Americans were self-described white Christians in 1976, but now that group only constitutes 43 percent of the U.S. population....

Intolerance in Missouri — lawmaker says there’s a ‘distinction between homosexuality and just being a human being’ -- Editorial

Rick Brattin, a Missouri state representative from Harrisonville, seems pretty certain: Homosexuality and humanity are incompatible.

“When you look at the tenets of religion, of the Bible, of the Qur’an, of other religions,” he said Monday, “there is a distinction between homosexuality and just being a human being.”...
