Freedom 250’s fair on National Mall highlights conservative groups - POLITICO

Some Democrats have charged that Trump has taken the bipartisanship out of the monumental anniversary. Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) in February said that the administration was working to “hijack the country’s 250th anniversary and sell access, hide his donors and rewrite history.” Also in February, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) launched a probe into Freedom 250’s fundraising practices...

Why Conservatives Are Trying to Kill the Voting Rights Act – Mother Jones

“The notion that everyone deserves equal access to the ballot, that everyone deserves equal access to elections, that one person ought to mean one vote, and that there ought to be some measure of political equality has never really sat well with the political right in this country,” Bouie says...

MAGA Is Discovering the Downsides of X - POLITICO

In a recent op-ed for The Wall Street Journal, Ohio gubernatorial hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy announced his plans to log off of X, citing its “warped projection of reality.” And Ramaswamy isn’t alone in heading for the digital exits. During a recent appearance on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast, the conservative commentator and former Breitbart editor Raheem Kassam bleakly proclaimed that he was deleting the app from his phone.

“A Man Like God” (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast) It’s in the Code ep 171

Josh Hawley builds his account on masculinity and manhood on the idea that men are created in God’s image and, as such, are his representatives on earth.

But what is Hawley’s God like? What kind of God does Hawley worship? Who is this God that is the pattern for human manhood?

In this episode, Dan argues that Hawley’s God’s insecurity drives him to exercise his power to dominate others. Check out the episode to hear why.

Move over, gender studies: the conservative tide coming for US universities

Al-Gharbi, the sociologist, believes that ideological conformity and a lack of conservative views are a genuine problem in higher education, but that the "reception" of these centers is complicated by the fact that the right is elsewhere engaged in attacking academic programs, such as women's, ethnic, and area studies, whose ideas they find objectionable.

That makes conservatives' enthusiasm for plurality of thought feel hypocritical, he said – and also risks making these centers more isolated from their broader universities "than might be ideal for them to achieve their actual goals". He added: "One of the dangers of these centers is that you could end up with the same kind of groupthink that they were concerned about, just going in the other direction."…

How the pope has confounded conservatives

"There are certain American conservative Catholics that hoped to see a course correction with the new pope, and many of those would be the sort of American Catholics who are more aligned with Maga.

"A pope who happens to be an American and who is suspicious and critical of unbridled free market capitalism is probably a disappointment to them. Francis was often dismissed by his conservative critics in the US who would say he just doesn't understand our country. They can't dismiss Leo so easily."

Leo, he added, was "not temperamentally someone that is looking for a fight. But I think he also realises the responsibility on his shoulders to use the megaphone he's been given on behalf of those who are without a voice. His instinct is to build bridges. But he believes you can't do that while sacrificing your integrity and certain causes that require you to speak out."

MIT rejects White House proposal to overhaul policies for preferential funding | MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology | The Guardian

The proposed Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education – which was sent to nine US higher education institutions including MIT, Brown University, Dartmouth College, the University of Arizona, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Southern California, the University of Texas at Austin, Vanderbilt University and the University of Virginia – would require universities to impose several restrictions.

Among them is a cap on international student enrollment, a five-year tuition freeze, strict gender definitions and a prohibition on anything that might "belittle" conservative viewpoints...

As Pope Leo riles conservatives, some say ‘just focus on the church’ - The Washington Post

Leo's new document, an apostolic exhortation defending the poor and marginalized, is based on an unfinished text started by Pope Francis. In it, he quotes Francis, calling on the faithful to "welcome, protect, promote and integrate" migrants. Leo takes aim at Christians who embrace "secular ideologies or political and economic approaches that lead to gross generalizations and mistaken conclusions." (He suggests they "go back and reread the Gospel.") And, deploying some of the same charged phrases favored by Francis, he pillories market capitalism, deriding "the dictatorship of an economy that kills" by enriching a small wealthy elite.

"Either we regain our moral and spiritual dignity," the document states, "or we fall into a cesspool."…

Leo "was very clear that what is happening to migrants in the United States right now is an injustice," said Dylan Corbett, executive director of the Texas-based Hope Border Institute, who attended the meeting. "He said the church cannot remain silent."…
