The Culture Wars Are Coming for Your Electricity – Mother Jones

Utah Republicans celebrated last week when PacifiCorp, one of the largest utilities in the West, announced it would stop serving customers in Washington state. PacifiCorp mainly operates in Utah, but also in Wyoming and Idaho—and, to the chagrin of some Utah legislators, blue states like California and Oregon. Utah legislators had previously pressured to break their utility's ties with states with more aggressive climate policies. …

"We want a divorce from the three states that don't look like Utah," said Mike Schultz, Utah's Republican House Speaker. "This is the first step forward."

How thousands of fossil fuel lobbyists got access to UN climate talks – and then kept drilling

"This information clearly exposes corporate capture of the global climate process … the space that should be about science and the people has been transformed into a large carbon business hall," said Adilson Vieira, spokesperson for the Amazonian Work Group. "While forest communities fight for survival, the same companies that cause climate collapse buy credentials and political influence to continue expanding their fossil empires."

"Not only are Indigenous peoples on the frontlines of their extractive sites suffering human rights violations, but we also face the brunt of climate chaos on our lands with worsening floods, wildfires, and extreme heat waves. We need to take down the 'for sale' sign on Mother Earth and bar entry to Cop for oil and gas lobbyists," said Brenna Yellowthunder, lead coordinator for the Indigenous Environmental Network, a member of KBPO...

Fossil-fuel firms receive US subsidies worth $31bn each year, study finds

The US currently subsidizes the fossil-fuel industry to the tune of nearly $31bn per year, according to a new analysis.

That figure, calculated by the environmental campaign group Oil Change International, has more than doubled since 2017. And it is likely a vast understatement, due to the difficulty of quantifying the financial gains from some government supports, and to a lack of transparency and reliable data from government sources, the group says…

Over 250 organizations back groundbreaking efforts by OECD countries to end $41 billion a year in fossil fuel finance

"We have waited long enough for the United States, and other wealthy historical emitters, to be a force for good at the OECD. The U.S. must turn away from its multi-billion dollar fossil financing and support the UK and Canada proposal, leading the push to finally end export credit agency support for fossil fuels."…

Sen. Whitehouse Opens Budget Hearing on Air Pollution, Public Health & the True Cost of Fossil Fuels

May 3, 2023

May 3 | Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, delivers his opening statement at a Budget Committee hearing entitled, "Who Pays the Price: The Real Cost of Fossil Fuels."

Scientists and economists warn that the United States is failing to reckon with the true costs of fossil fuels.

The International Monetary Fund estimates US fossil fuel subsidies amount to more than $660 billion each year when factoring in industry tax breaks and the harmful effects of fossil fuel combustion: global warming, air pollutants, and road accidents or congestion. Yet this does not include the harmful effects of local pollutants from oil and gas extraction, which cause serious health problems, like lower birth weights, elevated risk of leukemia, and higher asthma rates.

While President Biden has proposed repealing direct oil and gas subsidies in his FY 2024 budget request, House Republicans have doubled down on fossil fuel giveaways with their Default on America Act, which would leave American taxpayers footing the bill for climate change.

'Twisted': BP and Shell CEOs See Pay Double as Workers Struggle to Heat Homes

"While the rest of us struggle to pay our energy bills, the pay packages of fossil fuel giant bosses are doubling. Why are they allowed to profit from our misery?"

Fossil fuel corporations' ballooning profits and executive pay packages have provoked calls for far-reaching action to protect consumers from the high gas prices and electricity bills driving a historic cost-of-living crisis.

"Instead of allowing these huge payouts to end up in the pockets of CEOs, the government must step in with a proper tax on the oil industry and its profits, channel the money into stopping energy waste from homes, and invest in green heating schemes," Greenpeace U.K. campaigner Mel Evans toldReuters on Friday…

‘Condemning everyone alive’: outrage at US supreme court climate ruling

"Decisions like WV v EPA make it clear just how much the system is rigged against us. A supreme court that sides with the fossil fuel industry over the health and safety of its people is anti-life and illegitimate,"...

Kyrsten Sinema courted Republican fossil fuel donors with filibuster stance

…"The timing of the fundraiser and Sinema's filibuster-protecting vote really puts a fine point on the return on investment for her donors." Krumholz added that the fossil fuel fundraiser "seems well timed as Congress revisits the $550bn BBB measure focused on climate change provisions, where her vote could help industry minimize new regulatory and tax burdens."…

Trump administration accused of trying to bully banks into financing Arctic fossil fuel extraction – Raw Story

... The Wall Street Journal reports the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on Friday proposed a new rule that would bar financial institutions from refusing to lend to entire categories of lawful businesses. In the name of "fair access," the proposed rule would force banks to finance not only the fossil fuel industry that is largely responsible for the ever-worsening climate emergency, but also other highly controversial sectors such as for-profit private prisons and firearms manufacturers...
