Michigan elected officials, local leaders, activists call to defund ICE

Dingell said immigrants are central to the country's economy. "They're present in childcare, transportation, hospitality and manufacturing sectors that keep communities functioning every single day," Dingell said. "And they're not replacing American workers. They're working alongside of them, filling critical gaps."

"National security and civil liberties are not mutually exclusive," Dingell said. "Funding Homeland Security should go hand in hand with ensuring agencies follow the law, respect civil rights, and use taxpayer dollars responsibly." …

Montana youth activists who won climate case petition for enforcement

In a groundbreaking legal decision in August 2023, a Montana judge ruled in favor of 16 youth plaintiffs who had accused state officials of violating their constitutional rights by promoting fossil fuels. The state's supreme court affirmed the judge's findings in late 2024. But state lawmakers have since violated her ruling, enshrining new laws this year that contradict it, argue 13 of the 16 plaintiffs in a petition filed on Wednesday...

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and Trans Antaganism (Daniel Miller and Bradley Onishi; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence make up an unlikely order of nuns (pictures). Self-described as “twenty-first century queer nuns,” the Sisters began in 1979 when three bored gay men donned retired Roman Catholic nuns’ habits and went for a stroll through San Francisco’s gay Castro district. The stunned and delighted responses they received prompted these already-seasoned activists to consider whether the habits might have some use in social justice work, and within a year they had constituted the new order. Today, with more than 83 houses on four different continents, the Sisters offer health outreach, support, and, at times, protest on behalf of queer communities.

If you’re outraged by XR and Just Stop Oil, imagine how disruptive climate breakdown will be

The constant attacks on the activists are inadvertently revealing. They are called "selfish", when they are sacrificing far more for the environment than their critics. They are called "extremists", despite the world's ever more extreme weather. They are dismissed as middle-class dilettantes, yet also feared as fanatical members of a cult. They are condemned for interfering with "people going about their daily business", as the presenter Mark Austin put it with an air of outrage on Sky News, even though our everyday habits are a central cause of the crisis.
Underlying all these criticisms is a strong but unstated desire not to engage with the activists' main argument: that the climate emergency is so huge and urgent that modest changes to our lifestyles and conventional political action – from summits such as Cop27 to marches to polite negotiations between governments and companies – are no longer enough...

Florida's protest bill raises concerns about unequal treatment of left- and right-wing activists - The Washington Post

"We were harassed [by the counterprotesters]. We had a few guns brandished on us. … One guy even came up to me and flashed a White Power gesture in my face, but they didn't get any noise violations," said Christina Boneta, a Black 32-year-old mother who was taken into custody in late August and saddled with a $2,500 fine. "We are the ones who got the noise violations when, all summer long, we never threatened anybody, looted anything or burned anything."

Who caused the violence at protests? It wasn’t antifa. - The Washington Post

"There was a concerted effort by alt-right activists not just to conflate the protest with antifa, but to get antifa declared a terrorist organization by the president of the United States," Brooking said. "We see that there was a coordinated, essentially, series of petitions, an online lobbying effort."....
