‘Hugely Troubling’: A Former Wall Street Regulator Is Getting Nervous - POLITICO

She pointed to a simple measure of banks’ capital levels — one that considers how much debt they’re taking on without factoring in what kind of risks they’re taking — that suggests megabanks’ capital buffers are now roughly where they were in 2009. It’s unclear where the next threats to the financial system might come from. Bair is less worried about crypto, for instance, than she is about turmoil in private credit markets, where lenders that aren’t banks make riskier loans to businesses. But the whole point of capital is that it’s intended to guard against the unexpected.

And right now, she’s worried that regulators are letting their guard down...

Dems press for changes to crypto bill in counteroffer to GOP - Live Updates - POLITICO

The group of Democrats working on the crypto bill "is concerned that payments of interest or yield on stablecoin balances could pull deposits from the banking system, especially from community banks that play a pivotal role in supporting underserved communities and operate under Community Reinvestment Act obligations," the document said. "Yield also incentivizes risky behavior and could threaten the financial system if a stablecoin were to lose its value."…

CFPB’s Proposed Overdraft Rule Would Protect Consumers

"The new overdraft rule will ensure that banks are no longer using predatory overdraft fees to profit from consumers. Most overdraft fees are taken from low-income households when they can least afford it. Commonsense regulations on these fees would protect consumers from surprise charges and fees that often exceed the amount borrowed. Enormous overdraft fees that burden low-income consumers should no longer line the pockets of bank CEOs."…

Trump Regulators Just Rolled Back a Major Obama Era Bank Reform – Mother Jones

On Thursday, five federal regulatory agencies voted to roll back a key financial rule enacted following the 2008 financial crisis. The change will make it easier for banks to invest in venture capital and will tweak some restrictions on bank investing in hedge funds and private equity—all forms of riskier investing that Congress limited after 2010. The revised rule will also shrink the financial cushion that banks are required to keep on hand during certain types of derivatives trading. This particular change could free up an estimated $40 billion of capital for banks to trade with. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2020/06/trump-regulators-just-rolled-back-a-major-obama-era-bank-reform/
