Trump ends the EV mandate. Here’s what that means for the auto industry - The Washington Post
Several factors make a reversal in the EV transition unlikely. U.S. auto manufacturers have sunk billions of dollars into long-term EV production. Plus, the U.S. auto industry faces enormous pressures to compete with foreign EV manufacturers, such as those in China that have forged ahead with EV production.
"Presidential cycles are four years. These [factories] are 20- to 30-year investments. When you build a factory, it doesn't come and go," said Prasad, adding that Trump's executive order could result in shorter-term changes such as whether automakers introduce "hybrids or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles or range-extender EVs."

Record auto profits should be used to address inequality and the climate crisis
"Ford, General Motors and Stellantis have made a quarter trillion dollars over the last 10 years. Those profits, and the very existence of the big three today, were only possible through the sacrifices made by UAW members when American taxpayers bailed out the industry. Those same workers were never made whole after being forced to accept lower wages and were stripped of cost-of-living adjustments and retiree pensions.
Over the last four years, each big three CEO received on average a 40% pay raise on top of their multimillion-dollar salaries. Autoworkers saw their pay increase by a mere 6% in that same period of time, falling behind in inflation like the rest of American workers..."

Trump keeps bragging about imaginary auto plants in swing states - The Washington Post
We have documented before the president’s “swing-state spin,” in which he claims he has achieved great economic success for states that, coincidentally, are necessary for him to achieve an electoral college victory.
According to our database of Trump’s false and misleading claims, the president has mentioned Michigan in 120 false claims, Ohio in 94 claims and North Carolina in 68 claims. South Carolina is not a swing state, but it may have a competitive Senate race, so that may be why it slipped into his spiel on Labor Day

Fact-checking President Trump’s swing-state spin - The Washington Post
“Pennsylvania has never done this well. We’ve got steel back, we brought coal back, we brought so many things back, and the state now is doing better than it’s ever done. ... Miners are going back to work that never thought they’d see that job again.”

10 percent of Americans trading in a car plan to use Uber and Lyft instead of buying a new one
Wally Nowinski got his first car when he turned 16 in Michigan, the home of the U.S. auto industry. But after two years of living in New York City, he sold his wheels, using ride services, carsharing and bike sharing to get around.
"My mom didn't think I could do it. She thought I would buy a new car in six months," he said.
But that was more than a year ago, and his car budget of $820 per month fell to $250 for carsharing and ride services last year....

Under Trump, Trade Deficits Are Up, Interest Rates Have Doubled, and Car Sales are Plummeting
One of the remarkable things about Donald Trump's presidency is that every time he does something, you can find a tweet from a few years ago saying how terrible that thing is. Not just for a few things, either. It happens over and over and over. Aaron Blake finally brings this observation to the mainstream press:
Over the last two weeks, President Trump has attacked Syria without congressional approval, ratcheted up the use of force in Afghanistan with a huge bomb, and moved to reverse the Obama administration's policy of releasing White House visitor logs.
Each of these actions runs completely counter to the views and values once espoused by Trump on Twitter. And they join an amazingly long — and growing — list of old Trump tweets that have become eerily applicable to Trump's own presidency in ways that scream “hypocrisy.”...
