Your health care bill is incomprehensible. Congress is stepping in. - POLITICO

Despite the fuzzy math, the fact that the issue has bridged people as far apart as Sens. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has inspired lawmakers to run with it. Sponsors of the bills hope the issue will form the centerpiece of a new law Congress can pass during the lame duck session once the political pressure of the midterms has lifted...

Affordable Care Act enrollment projected to plunge by 5 million as costs spike, analysis shows | PBS News

The projected drop-off, much starker than initial federal data suggested, reveals how rising health costs, in part due to the Jan. 1 expiration of subsidies that had helped the vast majority of enrollees pay for their coverage, are forcing Americans to make tough decisions mid-year about whether to keep or go without health coverage...

Trump's 'Golden Dome' estimated to cost $1.2 trillion, far more than initially said | PBS News

Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-OR, who requested the estimate from the CBO, said in response to the report that the missile defense project is "nothing more than a massive giveaway to defense contractors paid for entirely by working Americans."

Last May, the president said the Golden Dome would cost $175 billion. The CBO last year estimated that just the space-based components of the Golden Dome could cost as much as $542 billion over the next 20 years...

Taxpayers might pay millions more to fight wildfires as jet fuel skyrockets

Last year, those planes burned through about $50 million worth of jet fuel. Every fire season is different, but if this year is the same as last season, that fuel bill would almost double to nearly $100 million. That's because the price of jet fuel has skyrocketed since the war in Iran began in late February. Ultimately, taxpayers will be the ones to shell out tens of millions of dollars more to fight summer wildfires this year...

What did ICE deployments cost American cities? : NPR

What unifies these ICE actions is they were all sustained over several weeks, in communities where local law enforcement isn't authorized to assist with federal immigration efforts. Still, these deployments resulted in knock-on effects that required the use of local police to bring about or preserve order.

Police overtime surged as departments were forced to deploy officers for demonstrations, extra patrols, security around federal facilities and emergency responses tied to the raids — often at overtime pay rates...

Republicans aim to exempt major polluters from Pfas cleanup costs

Utilities and state agencies typically have the power to order polluters to stop discharging Pfas into the sewer system, and the process is not difficult, advocates say. In Michigan, regulators in 2018 developed a successful program to identify companies that were a major source PFOA and PFOS discharges, then require them to reduce the levels of the chemicals they spit into the sewer.

"Utilities have complete control over the pipes and they don't have to allow industry to do this," said Emily Donovan, co-founder of Clean Cape Fear, a citizens group that formed in Wilmington, North Carolina in response to widespread Pfas pollution in the region...
