How the administration has mired the US in multiple crises

Between widespread cuts to vital government agencies, various disease and illness outbreaks, and new environmental disaster vulnerabilities, the United States is facing a convergence of crises with widespread repercussions.

Yet the Trump administration has hamstrung the federal government from addressing these crises – and in some cases is actively fanning them. Over the past year, the administration has moved to shrink the federal workforce, roll back environmental protections and policies intended to fight the climate crisis, reduced funding for scientific research and is seeking to advance legislation that would impose new voting restrictions...

Ultra-processed food linked to harm in every major human organ, study finds

The third paper says that global corporations, not individual choices, are driving the rise of UPF. UPF is a leading cause of the "chronic disease pandemic" linked to diet, with food companies putting profit above all else, the authors said.

The main barrier to protecting health is "corporate political activities, coordinated transnationally through a global network of front groups, multi-stakeholder initiatives, and research partners, to counter opposition and block regulation".

Bird Flu, Measles, and Trump’s Ticking Time Bomb (Reveal podcast)

On this week’s episode of “More To The Story,” how public health emergencies and the dismantling of federal agencies are colliding.

This month marks the five-year anniversary of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has killed 1.2 million people in the US alone. While life has returned to normal for most Americans, the threats to our health haven’t disappeared. Hundreds of people in the US continue to die of Covid each week, while millions more suffer complications from Long Covid. We’re experiencing the worst flu season in at least 15 years. There are multiple outbreaks of measles, the most serious occurring in an undervaccinated West Texas community. Then there’s the threat of bird flu, which has spread through dairy and poultry farms, sickening dozens of people and killing one so far.

At the same time, the second Trump administration has been actively reshaping and even dismantling the country’s public health infrastructure. Hundreds of employees across the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, and Food and Drug Administration have been handed termination notices. And Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the country’s new secretary of health and human services, still questions the use of vaccines, specifically the MMR vaccine to prevent measles.

On this week’s episode of More To The Story, host Al Letson talks with infectious disease epidemiologist Jessica Malaty Rivera about the collision course between the Trump administration’s health priorities and developing public health emergencies.

Rivera says the US is still not testing enough people to determine whether these diseases and others are spreading. Meanwhile, the Trump administration is making things even more difficult by withholding regular public health data that infectious disease experts routinely rely on to assess whether a larger health emergency is emerging. “Without good data, we can’t make good informed choices,” she says. “And it is conceivable that [a pandemic] can be happening and brewing right underneath our nose and us not pick it up.”

Experts fear rise in diseases as layoffs halt health research: ‘Incredibly bizarre gaslighting’

Mass layoffs at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) portend a future with more infectious disease outbreaks, chronic conditions and a widening gulf in health between the most affluent and vulnerable, experts told the Guardian.

Further, they said, the Trump administration's multi-pronged attacks on American science represent a generation-defining experience, a new chapter in the "boom and bust" cycle of health funding, and a masterclass in branding, as Donald Trump and secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F Kennedy Jr dismantle institutions in the name of improving them...

Trump’s former FDA commissioner warns RFK Jr. could ‘cost lives’ if confirmed - The Washington Post

"You're going to see measles, mumps and rubella vaccination rates go down," Gottlieb said on CNBC, referencing Kennedy's longtime criticism of federal recommendations for childhood immunizations, and noting a recent decline in childhood vaccination rates. The nation is approaching a "tipping point," Gottlieb said, where a continued decline in childhood vaccines could soon lead to measles outbreaks and deaths of children.

"We're going to start seeing epidemics of diseases that have long been vanquished, and, God forbid, we see polio reemerge in this country," he said...

How ‘apocalypse’ became a secular as well as religious idea

Many American Christians today feel that the day of God's judgment is just around the corner. In a December 2022 Pew Research Center Survey, 39% of those polled believed they were "living in the end times," while 10% said that Jesus will "definitely" or "probably" return in their lifetime.

Yet for some believers, the Christian apocalypse is not viewed entirely negatively. Rather, it is a moment that will elevate the righteous and cleanse the world of sinners.

Perils of pet poop – so much more than just unsightly and smelly, it can spread disease

The reality is that waste left to wash into the soil, whether in a neighborhood, trail or dog park, can spread life-threatening parasites not just among dogs and cats, but also to wild animals and people of all ages. A 2020 study found intestinal parasites in 85% of off-leash dog parks across the United States...

From cage-free chicks to puppy mills and Avian flu: Republicans are trying to roll back animal protections

The Republican-led Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression, or Eats, Act aims to end the authority of states and localities to set animal welfare and food safety standards. If passed, it could also jeopardize more than 1,000 state and local health and safety laws that set food-quality requirements and stop the spread of invasive species and zoonotic diseases like avian flu. Experts say that legislation this extreme would ordinarily be unlikely to pass, but its supporters are pushing the Eats Act as part of this year's critical package of agriculture policies known as the farm bill, so there's a greater possibility of it becoming law...

Abortion and inherited disease: Genetic disorders complicate the view that abortion is a choice

"…Abortion should remain legal, and it should not be limited by gestational age. I won't hide my personal belief that abortion should be available without exception up until the time of delivery. This view has largely been formed by watching children die of untreatable disease. The discovery of serious problems in a pregnancy can't be subjected to a tidy timeline…"

Larry Roszkowiak: It’s time to consider religion a disease | Freethought Today

… Unfortunately, religion sufferers are easy targets for liars. People who've contracted religion don't have to be pried off of reality, because they're already in a state of free-float. Once you believe water can be walked upon, you'll believe anything…
