Private equity faces existential crisis in US as unsold companies pile up

But tens of thousands of layoffs, high bankruptcy rates, and the soaring wealth of dozens of private equity billionaires has created bipartisan momentum for more oversight, even before the current interest rate crisis. And Donald Trump’s push to allow everyday Americans to invest in the sector through their retirement plans has raised new concerns.

Congress’s June housing bill curbs private equity investments in single-family homes. November’s midterm elections, which are widely expected to deliver one or both houses of Congress to Democrats, could see a sea change for the industry in Washington, while several states are pursuing their own regulation...

The FDA is a complete mess’: Trump makes fate of agency chief unclear as public trust plummets

Makary’s tenure at the FDA has been marked by several controversial decisions on drugs and vaccines amid plummeting staff morale over layoffs and the appointments of divisive officials. Recent political clashes include abortion, drugs and vaping, but decisions to pull back publications on the safety of shingles and Covid vaccines, among other immunization decisions, have also rocked public health. There have also been concerns about the transition from two clinical trials to one, the commissioner’s new priority review vouchers and “data-free” regulatory decisions...

Workers decry Whirlpool’s job cuts amid offshoring, praise of Trump’s tariffs

The job cuts at Whirlpool come as the company has continued to support the Trump administration's trade policies and claimed they will help bolster US manufacturing. Trump's trade policies appear to have done little for US manufacturing so far. The US has lost 83,000 factory jobs since Trump took office in January 2025...

Judge temporarily blocks firings by Trump administration during shutdown

"I am inclined to grant the plaintiff's motion," said Illston during a court hearing on the injunction request. "The evidence suggests that the office of management and budget, OMB, and the office of personnel management, OPM, have taken advantage of the lapse in government spending, in government functioning to assume that all bets are off, that the laws don't apply to them any more, and that they can impose the structures that they like on the government situation that they don't like, and I find, I believe, that the plaintiffs will demonstrate, ultimately, that what's being done here is both illegal and is in excess of authority and is arbitrary and capricious."…

Vance uses false claims to pin shutdown blame on Democrats as White House warns of layoffs

"The Chuck Schumer-AOC wing of the Democratic party shut down the government because they said to us, we will open the government only if you give billions of dollars of funding to healthcare for illegal aliens. That's a ridiculous proposition."

It is also a false claim. US law bars undocumented immigrants from receiving the health care benefits Democrats are demanding, and the party has not called for a new act of Congress to change that...

Donald Trump's tariffs may lead to price hikes, increased layoffs: Experts

Under an analysis of all tariffs rising to Trump's full "Liberation Day" levels, the researchers found total direct tariff costs to midsize firms would grow more than sixfold to $187.7 billion, or $4,740 per employee.

"An annual tariff cost of $4,740 per employee means that midsize firms would, on average, face additional costs of over 7 percent of their payroll," they wrote...
