Trump SSI Rule Change Targets Disabled Adults Who Live With Families — ProPublica

Now, President Donald Trump’s administration is poised to penalize people like Burton simply for living in the same home as their families, according to four federal officials, internal emails and a federal regulatory listing. The administration is working on a rule change that would deduct the value of a disabled adult’s bedroom from their SSI allotment, even if the family members they live with are poor enough to qualify for food stamps. This would mean slashing the benefits of some of the most low-income SSI recipients by up to a third — about $330 a month in Burton’s case — or ending their support altogether...

Brian Fitzpatrick delivers a warning on GOP reconciliation redo

Still, many of Fitzpatrick's colleagues are making plans for an expansive new GOP-only bill that would include more money for Homeland Security operations, Iran war funding and other cost-of-living priorities, while demanding it be fully offset with spending cuts — possibly from social programs targeted for "fraud prevention."

Senate approves Republican plan for trillions in tax breaks and spending cuts

One crucial challenge ahead will be for the House to accept the way the Senate's budget plan allows for extending the tax cuts under a scoring method that treats them as not adding to future deficits, something many House Republicans reject.

A new estimate from the joint committee on taxation projects the tax breaks will add $5.5tn in debt over the next decade when including interest, and $4.6tn not including interest. On top of that, the senators added an additional $1.5tn that would allow some of Trump's campaign promises, such as no taxes on tips, social security benefits and overtime, swelling the overall the price tag to $7tn...

Veterans cuts spark GOP backlash on Capitol Hill - POLITICO

"It's political malpractice not to consult Congress if that's what you intend to do," Graham said. "Maybe you've got a good reason to do it. I like Doug Collins — he's a great guy. But we don't need to be reading memos in the paper about 20 percent cut at the VA."…

Opinion | Whoops! The GOP accidentally admits tax cuts don’t pay for themselves. - The Washington Post

Under the new rules package, the budgetary requirements are more one-sided — in favor of tax cuts. Going forward, tax cuts do not need to be offset with any sort of savings elsewhere in the budget. They can add trillions to the debt. No problem.

But this is not true of spending programs. Spending program increases still have to be paid for...

Democrats rally against Trump's cruel proposal to harm Social Security Disability beneficiaries

Donald Trump is systematically chipping away at every government social insurance program, from food stamps to Medicaid and Medicare to Social Security, to advance his cruel agenda. Among the swarm of regulation changes to all these programs is the creation of a new category of beneficiaries for Social Security Disability Insurance, one made up of people who will have to jump through multiple invasive hoops every two years in order to keep their modest benefits. https://www.dailykos.com/story/2020/1/29/1914896/-Democrats-rally-against-Trump-s-cruel-proposal-to-harm-Social-Security-Disability-beneficiaries

Guess what's in the GOP's 2018 budget? Spending cuts for America's most vulnerable

House Republicans unveiled their 2018 budget blueprint Tuesday which is intended to pave the way for their major rewrite of the tax code. But the only way for them to keep their tax overhaul dreams within reach for a simple party-line vote is by using the budget to slash the heck out of social safety net programs that help some of America's neediest populations....
