The administration declared in an interim final rule released last month that a diagnosis, even for a disease as grave as cancer, isn’t enough to claim an exemption from the 80-hour requirement, unless beneficiaries submit additional proof that they physically can’t work. Democratic attorneys general from 25 states and Washington, D.C. plan to argue the rule is both too strict, in not offering blanket exemptions to people with certain diseases, and too vague, in failing to guide states on how to determine who is too sick to work — and will ask the judge to block the stricter medical frailty policy...

Senate votes to confirm Tulsi Gabbard as top U.S. intelligence official
In the end, McConnell was the sole Republican to buck Trump and vote no on Gabbard. In a scathing, lengthy statement after the vote, McConnell said it was apparent Gabbard was not prepared for the job and demonstrated a "history of alarming lapses in judgment."
"The Senate's power of advice and consent is not an option; it is an obligation, and one we cannot pretend to misunderstand. When a nominee's record proves them unworthy of the highest public trust, and when their command of relevant policy falls short of the requirements of their office, the Senate should withhold its consent," McConnell said, specifically sounding the alarm about Gabbard's remarks about Snowden, Chinese aggression and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Kentucky Legislature cuts Democratic governor out of picking potential McConnell replacement - POLITICO
The change is the latest Republican-led maneuver to the state's vacancy law. Prior to the current system, the governor was able to appoint a temporary replacement until a special election was held during the next House election. McConnell was the one who encouraged changing the rules three years ago.

US border policy deal within reach despite efforts by Trump to derail it, senators say
"I think the border is a very important issue for Donald Trump," the Utah senator Mitt Romney, a Republican who has pressed his party to approve military aid for Ukraine, told reporters on Capitol Hill on Thursday. "And the fact that he would communicate to Republican senators and congresspeople that he doesn't want us to solve the border problem because he wants to blame Biden for it is really appalling."
He continued: "The reality is that we have a crisis at the border, the American people are suffering as a result of what's happening at the border. And someone running for president ought to try and get the problem solved as opposed to saying: 'Hey, save that problem. Don't solve it. Let me take credit for solving it later.'"…
At a press conference earlier this week, the Texas senator Ted Cruz, a Republican, denounced the proposal, the details of which have not yet been released, as a "stinking pile of crap" that "represents Senate Republican leadership waging war on House Republicans".
Cruz alleged that the negotiators involved cared only about supporting Ukraine and not fixing the issues at the southern border….
