Trump Says Religion Reduces Crime. Experts Disagree. | HuffPost Life

““Religion can have the opposite effect,” Adamczyk added. “We can think about murder and terrorism, and in some cases, religion is the motivating source for that.”

Belief in heaven and hell doesn’t appear to deter crime, either.

“Although there are people who choose not to commit crime in order to ‘go to heaven,’ empirical research does not indicate that is how religion generally works in reducing crime,” Jang said.

This distinction is found in a 2021 study by the Percy Foundation, a nonprofit that studies religion and criminal justice. Researchers interviewed 526 inmates and found that the majority were religious believers prior to their arrests.

Notably, 69.5% of sex offenders and 62.7% of the non-sex offenders said religious faith was “somewhat or very important” to them based on self-reported views prior to their arrests. While this is compared to 73% of adult men in the general U.S. population who say religion is “somewhat or very important,” according to a 2014 Pew survey, it’s still noteworthy that the majority of incarcerated men were religious before committing a crime. ”…

The Trump administration is planning a prayer event on the National Mall. All but one of the speakers is Christian : NPR

Americans United for Separation of Church and State said the event will advance Christian nationalism rather than religious freedom, and on Friday, a group of progressive faith leaders will host a virtual press briefing that argues Rededicate 250 misrepresents how America's founders approached religious tolerance.

As a counterpoint to the Rededicate event, Interfaith Alliance said it will team up with protest artist Robin Bell to project pro-religious freedom messages, including "Democracy NOT Theocracy" and "Reject Christian Nationalism," on the walls of the National Gallery of Art on Thursday evening…

Texas AG Ken Paxton pushes for Christian prayer in public schools - The Washington Post

"In Texas classrooms, we want the Word of God opened, the Ten Commandments displayed, and prayers lifted up," Paxton said in a news release on his office's letterhead. "Our nation was founded on the rock of Biblical Truth, and I will not stand by while the far-left attempts to push our country into the sinking sand."…

US to allow federal workers to promote religion in workplace | Reuters

U.S. federal employees may try to recruit their coworkers to join their religion, the Trump administration said on Monday in a statement allowing workers to organize prayer groups during non-work hours.

Agency employees may seek to "persuade others of the correctness of their own religious views" in the office, Scott Kupor, director of the Office of Personnel Management, the U.S. government's human resource agency, wrote in a statement...

SCOTUS Is Primed to Overturn a Landmark Church-State Precedent (Andrew Seidel; One Nation, Indivisible podcast Episode #021)

The Christian Nationalist legal outfits are bringing faith and football back to the Supreme Court. First Liberty Institute is asking the court to overturn a crucial church-state precedent, Santa Fe v. Doe, a 2000 opinion that prevented public schools from broadcasting Christian prayers at football games, thereby safeguarding the religious freedom and rights of every single person. The same Christian Nationalist group that brought the case of the football coach that imposed his Christian prayers on other people’s kids is back at the court. Will the court take the case? And can Brett Kavanaugh even hear this case? Or does his history show a serious bias?

Also, Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission wants to hear from you! “Share your reflections on the first hearing and religious liberty on social media, using our hashtag #ReligiousLibertyCommission. You are welcome to provide public comment to the Commission by emailing us at RLC@usdoj.gov. So if you watched that first meeting, consider sending some feedback.”
