The white working class knows the American project isn’t working. Here’s why that will never matter to them

Du Bois understood that the racial order required by capitalism could only be maintained if white elites successfully manipulated the white masses against their class alliances with other races. They needed to be goaded into loyalty to a white supremacist planter class that struggled to keep its chokehold on the postwar south. Convincing poor white farmers to side with the wealthy land owners they otherwise begrudged required posing newly enfranchised African Americans as a threat to even the lowest white man’s standing...

To Pay for Trump Tax Cuts, House GOP Could Slash Benefits for Poor, Working Class — ProPublica

Other proposals would eliminate tax breaks for families with children.

Currently, parents can get a tax credit of up to $2,100 for child care expenses. The House Republican plan floats the elimination of that break. The cut is estimated to save $55 billion over a decade…

Another proposal in the list of options takes aim squarely at parents raising children on their own. The provision would eliminate the "head of household" filing status to collect almost $200 billion more in taxes over a decade from single parents and other adults caring for dependents on their own…

Food Banks See Rising Hunger Among Working Americans: CityLab Daily - Bloomberg

Food banks across the US are seeing a post-pandemic wave of demand driven by working people caught in America's cost-of-living crunch. In Flagstaff, Arizona, a pantry that served 127,000 meals in all of 2015 now serves 40,000 meals a month. In the Washington, DC, metro region, the Capital Area Food Bank distributed 5 million more meals than it did the previous fiscal year...

Sanders warns Biden: address working-class fears or risk losing to demagogue | US elections 2024 | The Guardian

Opinion | How MAGA Corrupts the Culture of the White Working Class - The New York Times

Now, I ask you, as the Republican Party self-consciously tries to become the party of the American working class, which set of values does it model and espouse? Sheepdog or wolf? When Donald Trump said, "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters, OK?" he was cultivating not healthy loyalty but rather destructive defiance, and that defiance has withstood some of the worst scandals and misconduct in the history of the presidency.

When Senator Ted Cruz took the stage at a conservative conference and declared, "I'm Ted Cruz, and my pronoun is 'kiss my ass,' " he wasn't being direct or plain-spoken. He was crass and demeaning. When Senator Josh Hawley raised his fist in support of the Capitol mob before the Jan. 6 attack, he was saluting the wolves.

But here's what's particularly perverse: Each of the individuals I just mentioned is a member of the upper echelon of the American elite...

Sanders Blasts Corporations 'Spending Millions' to Defeat Worker Champion Julie Su

"Let's be honest. The debate over Ms. Su has nothing to do with her qualifications," Sanders (I-Vt.), chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, said during the panel's hearing. "No one can tell us with a straight face that Ms. Su is unqualified for this position. She is exceptionally well qualified."

"No. This debate has everything to do with the fact that Julie Su is a champion of the working class who will stand up against the forces of corporate greed," Sanders continued…https://www.commondreams.org/news/sanders-corporations-julie-su

Educator Chris Williams tweeted: "Apparently myself, a public school teacher who joined the Peace Corps out of college, and currently with over 20k in student loans after graduating in 2009, is a slacker according to Ted Cruz. Good to know."…

Opinion | No, the GOP and the Dems Haven’t Actually Swapped Brains - POLITICO

... The current GOP is less interested in the messy business of governing than it is in performative indignation and the memes that play well in social media and on cable television. Memes, it shouldn't need to be said, are not ideas and don't require a consistent set of principles. The result is a kind of free-floating nihilism, as the GOP chases narratives that stir outrage, generate clicks, shake loose grassroots contributions, and play well on Newsmax and Fox...
