Microsoft’s president warns White House against skilled immigration crackdown - POLITICO

“We should consider the fact that when the president honored six Americans with these technology and science medals, five of the six had come to the United States as immigrants,” Smith told Decoded on the sidelines of the International AI Summit in Dublin, Ireland. “And those five individuals, if you put them and their companies together, have companies that have a market value equal to more than 25% of the market value of the total S&P 500.”…

Trump administration proposes dramatic overhaul of 2030 census that changes who counts as living in America - POLITICO

The changes, if approved and implemented for 2030, would have enormous political consequences. Census results determine how the 435 seats in the House are apportioned among states and form the basis for redrawing congressional maps. Race and ethnicity data collected through the census are also used to produce population data states receive for redistricting and to help enforce the Voting Rights Act and other civil rights laws…

The system meant to protect ICE detainees has collapsed

Detainees and their families tell NPR that in the very worst cases the absence of transparency and accountability, and the subsequent failure to adhere to mandated grievance guidelines, is one of the leading factors for the record number of deaths in detention — at least 53 since the start of President Trump's second term...

WATCH: Trump announces effort to train veterans as truckers amid immigrant driver crackdown | PBS News

A new campaign launched last week will promote programs that let veterans who recently drove large military vehicles skip the required skills test for a commercial driver's license. Other soldiers can attend a commercial driving school during their last six months of active duty. The GI Bill will also pay for 100% of commercial driver's license training and for some people even pay a housing allowance while they are in school…

Man killed by ICE agents not intended target of immigration arrest, DHS says

“On July 7, officers were almost at the target’s address when they observed a white van with an individual who resembled the target,” the official said.

The statement does not clarify what happened next. Salgado Araujo died in the hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to accounts from local law enforcement officers. The officers involved were not wearing body cameras, DHS said.

The ICE agents who stopped Salgado Araujo claimed he “weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer” who then fired “his weapon in self-defense”, but did not provide evidence to corroborate that account...

Thompson bill includes legal employment pathway for undocumented farm workers - Live Updates - POLITICO

Thompson’s proposal would allow some undocumented immigrants to apply for H-2A status if they had already been doing agricultural work in the U.S. The legislation would waive certain immigration violations for migrants so long as they otherwise qualify for the visa program, a provision likely to be opposed by more conservative members of Thompson’s party...

‘We should be worried’: report sheds light on ICE’s booming arsenal of hi-tech surveillance tools

”I am worried about an agency that has little oversight from Congress and internally receiving what’s essentially a slush fund. We have seen what CBP and ICE can do with a huge influx of money already – and how many civil rights violations are occurring on the ground. We know they’re building the capability to do a new type of invasive surveillance based on this new domestic terrorism memo that sets up the infrastructure to surveil people the US considers to be anti-American...”

Heather McGhee and Adam Serwer on the Power of Protest (Al Franken podcast on YouTube)

Guest Host Heather McGhee, author of the groundbreaking book “The Sum of Us” and expert in economic and social policy, is joined by The Atlantic's Adam Serwer! They discuss a number of issues facing the country, including the continued unrest in Minnesota and the No Kings protests happening nationwide. From the steps of the Supreme Court to the streets of Minneapolis, McGhee and Serwer explore how the struggle for Black freedom has historically paved the way for immigrant rights and why that "inheritance" is currently under its most aggressive attack in generations.

Heather and Adam also examine the recent SCOTUS arguments on birthright citizenship and how this could create a whole new class of undocumented immigrants in this country, particularly Chinese immigrants.

They also examine Adam's recent writing following the death of Rev. Jesse Jackson about what Rev. Jackson’s message meant to the movement. They dissect his 1980's vision of cross-racial, cross-class solidarity and explain why his "Patchwork Quilt" philosophy is more relevant today than ever.

Trump’s ‘racist hate speech’ and migration crackdowns violate human rights, UN panel says

"Portraying them as criminals or as a burden, by politicians and influential public figures at the highest level, particularly the president, may incite racial discrimination and hate crimes," it said, in what appeared to be an unprecedented singling out of comments made by a US president.

Trump has long sought to blame immigrants for crime, despite a wide range of statistics showing that they bolster the US economy and commit crimes at far lower rates than people born in the US...
