Corporate tax payments plunge as AI feasts on new incentives - POLITICO

Some Democrats, including Sens. Ron Wyden (Ore.), the ranking member on the tax-writing Finance Committee, and Mark Warner (Va.), are now pushing to curb investment breaks for data centers.

“Massive corporations should pay their fair share,” Wyden said in a statement. “This starts by fixing the corporate income tax” including “repealing big giveaways for data centers.”…

New IRS proposal threatens universities' tax-exempt status over diversity programs - POLITICO

“Weaponizing the IRS to attack colleges and universities that uphold and expand civil rights is outrageous,” Todd Wolfson, the group’s president, said in a statement. “This is blatantly racist political coercion intended to deny minority students reparative opportunities to further their education.”

Mike Gavin, head of the Alliance for Higher Education, said the “administration’s latest rules changes are its most blatant attack to keep working class Americans and people of color from accessing higher education and a better life.”…

More taxes have gone uncollected after IRS slashed its staff : NPR

"Defunding the IRS is not a money-saving proposition because you have fewer employees," says Natasha Sarin, who served as a counselor on tax policy to former Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. "It is a money-losing one, because you do a less good job of collecting taxes."…

The IRS Is Imploding – Mother Jones

“In many years of paying taxes, I’ve never had a problem with the IRS. So, I was surprised to receive a letter dated May 25 informing us that my husband and I owe lots more money than we had paid for our 2025 taxes—and of course interest and fines. After reviewing the somewhat cryptic letter, we realized that we did not, in fact, owe any money. The IRS had simply failed to credit quarterly payments that we’d made on time. Because we had all the bank records, it seemed as if this would be a relatively straightforward problem to fix—until I picked up the phone and called the IRS.

“Two hours on hold later, I gave up. When I tried again a few days later, the outgoing message informed me, “Due to the high call volume, we are unable to answer your call. Please call back later today or tomorrow.” And I was disconnected…”

US judge nullifies Trump deal to resolve IRS lawsuit in scathing ruling

“The nature of the suit itself and the conduct of the parties and counsel from its filing make plain that this was an attempt to use the court to provide some legitimacy to an agreement to confer immunity to people and entities affiliated with the president and to earmark billions of dollars from American taxpayers to redress grievances not defined in the law,” she wrote.

“The court finds that this matter was brought for an improper purpose – to gain the imprimatur of judicial legitimacy for a ‘settlement’ that had no viable basis in law or fact,” she added.

Her ruling blocks both Trump, his sons, and business, and the government from “using, offering, admitting, or citing” anything from the so-called settlement agreement in any kind of proceeding...

Judge accuses Trump of manipulating courts to justify Anti-Weaponization Fund - POLITICO

“This lawsuit was not brought to vindicate rights; it was brought to manipulate the judicial process,” U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams wrote in a blistering 56-page ruling. “This was an attempt to use the Court to provide some legitimacy to an agreement to confer immunity to people and entities affiliated with the President and to earmark billions of dollars from American taxpayers to redress grievances not defined in the law.”…

Takes the Cake (Andrew McCabe and Allison Gill; Unjustified podcast)

The Department of Justice has established a $1.8B “anti-weaponization fund” after Trump dropped his lawsuit against the IRS.

A former federal prosecutor has been indicted for sending herself copies of Volume II of Jack Smith’s final report.

A federal judge has dismissed the charges against Kilmar Ábrego García on vindictive and selective prosecution grounds.

The Justice Department has dropped all remaining charges against the Broadview 6 after a grand jury transcript showed gross misconduct.

Weekly Roundup: Reparations for Traitors and the Slush Fund Presidency (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

  • A massive DOJ–IRS settlement that includes a $1.8 billion "slush fund" ostensibly for victims of government "weaponization." The hosts trace how this fund is likely to benefit January 6 participants and allies, connecting it to the long-running "Big Lie" and what Brad calls real-time myth-making.
  • How narratives about January 6 have shifted from condemnation to celebration—and what it means when those narratives are backed by real money and political power.
  • The broader ecosystem of Trumpism: primary victories that show Trump still holds sway, the endorsement of scandal-plagued figures like Ken Paxton, and the ongoing fusion of political loyalty with religious justification.
  • A sharp critique of billionaire logic, as Jeff Bezos defends his tax record and "value to civilization," prompting a deeper discussion about inequality, power, and what counts as public good.
  • A few reasons for hope, pointing to court losses for the DOJ and small but meaningful acts of accountability—reminders that resistance, however incremental, is still possible.

Trump IRS settlement: Why $1.8 billion ‘anti-weaponization’ fund lacks legal precedent - PolitiFact

In announcing a new $1.776 billion fund to compensate people the Trump administration says were victims of judicial "weaponization," the Justice Department said a 2011 legal settlement involving Native American farmers provides precedent.

The 2011 settlement differs from the new fund in at least four ways: It had more specific standards for receiving compensation; significant judicial oversight; a smaller dollar amount for a potentially larger group of beneficiaries; and a more standard process for creating the fund...

Trump’s new ‘slush fund’ for his pals
