Donald Trump’s finances are a mess. ‘Lucky Loser’ has the receipts - The Washington Post

The backbone of the book is the numbers. Because Buettner and Craig have such a trove of documents, they are able to prove the reality under the hype that is Donald Trump in incontrovertible detail. In the decade that ended in 1995, a decade in which Trump was supposedly a huge success, he recorded more than $1.1 billion in business losses on his tax returns, which the authors call a "failure of historical proportions." He used those losses to avoid paying taxes in subsequent years. The news in their book lies not in one specific detail, but rather in the sheer accumulation of damning facts.…

Get-rich-quick schemes drained my town’s wealth. At a Christian conference, their legacy lives on

According to Pew, nearly half of evangelical Protestants never attended college, and more than half earn less than $50,000 annually (a third earn less than $30,000). Financial literacy is desperately needed in many of these communities, and while Life Surge offered some pragmatic advice on real estate, stocks and taxes, each speaker employed a litany of culture war rhetoric – prayer is needed in school, the snowflakes of cancel culture are coming for us, Hollywood hates Christians – implying an us v them worldview and fueling an ominous urgency for not only investment, but proselytization...

Hundreds of Scientists Weigh in on a High-Stakes U.S. Abortion Case - Scientific American

… Finally, the economists supply evidence to counter Fitch's argument that abortion is no longer necessary because support is available from the state. The United States is alone among wealthy nations in not mandating paid maternity leave, the brief points out. It also provides figures indicating that a single parent earning the minimum wage would need to spend more than two-thirds of their income on childcare, with care for the average infant costing about US$10,400 per year. These figures matter, the researchers argue, because two main reasons that women give for seeking abortions are concerns about money and caring for existing children. About 75% of women who choose to have abortions are in a low-income bracket, and 59% already have children, according to the economists' brief...

President Trump has been granted a second 45-day extension to file his personal financial disclosure forms, which will give the American public its only detailed look at the president’s private business interests, according to a letter released by the White House. The forms are supposed to detail Trump’s income, debt, stock holdings and outstanding loans for 2019. They were originally due May 15, but Trump got an extension until the end of June. On June 29, Scott Gast, deputy counsel to the president, granted Trump a second extension, until Aug. 13, according to the letter. Federal law allows only two such extensions.....

The Founders checked and balanced the president’s finances - The Washington Post

In a trio of cases being argued before the Supreme Court on Tuesday, President Trump claims he is immune from subpoenas by Congress and state prosecutors for his financial records. Constitutional history is not on his side. The Founders embraced checks and balances, and they constructed a legal system to limit presidential power, especially on issues relating to presidential finances. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/05/12/founders-checked-balanced-presidents-finances/
