Ukraine's drone strikes challenge Russia's grip on Crimea

"Putin's got a problem here," said Mark Montgomery, a retired U.S. Navy rear admiral who comes to Ukraine regularly to help train the military. He's been keeping a close watch on Crimea.

"You cannot keep that many people in a place with limited water, no fuel, limited foodstuffs. I mean, they're going to have to leave," he said...

Zelenskyy warns Egypt of food supply threat caused by Russian strikes in Black Sea

“Ukraine is one of the largest food suppliers to Egypt and to ‌a significant number ‌of other countries in Africa ‌and the Middle East. These supplies are now under serious threat because of Russia’s war,” Zelenskyy said on X. “We are already seeing ‌a significant reduction in supplies, and this could have very unpleasant consequences due to rising prices and shortages,” he said, adding that the two countries had agreed to work on solutions...

President Xi never wastes a good crisis. As Iran, Ukraine and Palestine distract the world, he tightens his grip

Xi’s ever more bullish stance owes much to Trump’s trashing of the post-1945 global order, disdain for international law and national sovereignty (as seen in Venezuela and Greenland), and strained relations with traditional allies such as Japan, South Korea and European Nato countries. Many now view the US as an unreliable partner. For China, Trump’s shifting focus away from Asia and towards the western hemisphere is a golden opportunity to be exploited while it lasts. That may be one reason why Xi has taken the unusual step of agreeing to visit Trump in Washington next month, so soon after their May meeting in Beijing...

Trump backtracks from promise to let Ukraine build Patriot missiles

The reversal is likely to unsettle Kyiv, which has spent the past year lobbying for both more interceptors and the means to produce its own, amid a global shortage that has been compounded by the volume of Patriot and Tomahawk stock expended in Washington’s confrontation with Iran...

Al and Franklin Foer on Iran, Ukraine, Soccer, and The World (Al Franken Podcast on YouTube)

We’re joined by our longtime friend, Franklin Foer of The Atlantic! We have a deal in Iran or at least an agreement to have an agreement. Even some Republicans are calling this an unconditional surrender. Al and Frank break down the massive concessions, which include a staggering $300 billion to reconstruct Iran, lifted blockades, and Iranian tolls in the Strait of Hormuz. And what does all of this mean for Trump and Netanyahu’s plummeting relationship ahead of the Israeli elections this fall?

Frank also breaks down the war in Ukraine, the situation in Venezuela, and ongoing tensions with Cuba.

Plus, we discuss Frank’s bestselling book, How Soccer Explains the World: An Unlikely Theory of Globalization. It was recently reissued to coincide with the U.S. hosting the World Cup. Frank explains how his views of world soccer have changed since the original publishing and why globalization never brought us the "kumbaya political liberalism" we were promised.
